: Is your rear-end not shot?

It has to be done - how about hearing from the guys (or gals) who have had no problems with their rears? Comments, please (year, mileage, driving style, clunks/no clunks.)

2004 - 12K miles. Original Diff. No Issues. No whine. Changed fluid ~5K miles.
Fairly mellow street driving; not so mellow at track events. Learned to drive 'around' the clunk.

'05 with 8k miles of mostly hard driving with no whining or indication of distress. Doesn't mean it won't blow, though.

Not a whine from mine with almost 14K miles, but my transmission keeps going bad...

09-08-05, 03:04 PM
No noise from mine. 2005, bought in December '04, ~5k. I shift hard on occasion, but never launch hard, mostly from a roll.

I find it amazing that folks are changing fluid on thier own. Not that it is hard, but the car has a 4 year, 50k mile warranty. I'm not changing until the service interval says so.

2005, driven like I stole it just about every day for the past year, just went over 24,000 miles, changed the fluid once around 10,000 miles and (knock on wood) haven't had a single problem... No noise, no leaks, nada, zip, zilch...

I'm sure it will start leaking or making noise on my way home tonight...

09-08-05, 03:20 PM
2005, 8500 miles, no problems.

~3.5k miles. Maggie installed @ ~2.7k miles. Diff fluid changed at ~2k miles & the tech represented it came out fairly clean. At the moment, I haven't experienced any issues, but I'm honestly expecting it to fail. I just want it to last long enough so that the '06 differential is the "standard" replacement diff.

With the stupid Maggie (:bouncy: ), I can't help but put my foot into it, but I have not once launched it hard. Also, while I shift as fast as I can, I don't "power" shift either (I have done this all of one time since I purchased the car). Basically, while I drive fast as hell, I don't abuse the car, especially the rear-end, at all.

I can thank Heavymetal's rear-end failure for my extreme cautiousness...:D

09-08-05, 03:30 PM
No worries from rear end at 18 K miles. But no launches either. Just some strong street driving (for a geezer that is).

09-08-05, 06:30 PM
2004 V. 8000 miles. No whining or troubles. I have only launched hard about 3 or 4 times where the wheels have hopped and I don't power shift, just drive fast.:sneaky:

09-08-05, 06:33 PM
2005 V.... 16,000 miles... drive like i stole it... i look for freeway pulls... i don't launch it often... but I play hard... not a whine... actually I haven't even changed out the rear diff fluid yet! :hide:

I've been meaning to... car's going to the dealership tomorrow to get the wheel hop bushings put in... and a diff fluid flush.

09-08-05, 06:47 PM
I've got 1100 miles. So, the fact that I have had no issues is not saying much - especially since the car only had 502 miles before this past weekend when I drove to Houston and back . . .

09-08-05, 07:50 PM
I have zero miles on my new rear differential and no problems whatsoever. Of course I have to take the dealer's word for it as it's been sitting in their service center since August 29th awaiting a new transmission. :p

09-08-05, 08:24 PM
i have a slight whine and vibration, i dont think its getting worse...05 with 16000 on her...original diff so far...dont jinx me....knock on wood...:duck:

09-08-05, 11:50 PM
2005.... 7k miles... moderate driving style... hard driving occasionally... not hard launges... NO PROBLEMS AT ALL! :)

09-09-05, 02:00 AM
2004 5700 mi. One SCCA autocross season completed (12 events). No launches above 1500 RPM in competition (wheel spin = bad time) and even then I feather the clutch a bit 'til I hook up. Clark Kent on public roads. Running on original fluid. Not a peep.

09-09-05, 02:53 AM
No problems with my babies rear end. She still runs as as nice the day I got her, as smooth as a babies buttox!

But enough about my wife! :lildevil:

My 05 V has 8000 miles so far and not a peep! Still running like a champ!!!

09-09-05, 11:43 AM
I think I have a little whine, but with radio and exhaust I don't hear it that much. If I install B&M shifter I guess it will get lost in the symphony of sounds until it get's louder. Still hoping they do a TSB on rears dated pre late 05.

I don't break tires loose, seems like I can accelerate fairly hard without tire hop even. Not banging gears (especially with stock shifter)... It's faster than most cars out there without taching it out...:lildevil:

09-09-05, 02:27 PM
2005, 9500 miles, no real hard launches but I do have some fun once rolling with some shifting. No clunks. I just had the bushings done and they checked the rear end - no issues yet although I probably just jinxed myself.

09-09-05, 04:01 PM
I have 27,000 plus miles with no problems. I drive without dumping the clutch and I haven't tracked this car yet. It is driven with verve but not abusively( depending on whos definition you use).

09-09-05, 06:18 PM
1 year 7 months, 9400 total miles, 3400 miles since Maggie installed. No breaks and no leaks. I wouldn't know if the rear is whining because my exhaust and SC are louder.

"V" is driven briskly, a couple of hammer shifts, lots of fast mountain driving (curves).

owned < 1 year, about 8,500 miles. Not a lot of hard off-the-line launches but otherwise I drive it like a bat out of hell. Never changed the diff fluid. No problems, no noise, runs great.

09-10-05, 01:00 AM
no problems.. 2005, with maggie & stroked.. Ive posted pics of my diff numerous times, looks great & i hope it stays that way..

09-10-05, 04:40 AM
2004 18k+ miles

Average 13.? mpg, turn um n burn um would be the best description...
No problems yet!

Oh, and yes, platinum is the faster color. :cool2:

09-10-05, 10:43 AM
Close to 20,000 miles, maggied, no rear end problems. I drive assertively but not aggressively. 99% of my launches are on the roll.

09-10-05, 12:33 PM
6200 miles, no clutch dumps but many hard shifts, very spirited driving mostly race from a rolling start. Diff does have a whine around 40 miles an hour but not as bad as my C-5 Corvette, or older Firebird. I have never had a car with posi rear end that didn't make some kind of strange noise I have owned over 40 cars including 6 real race cars.

5600 miles, no problems, but she has been babied. 500 intentionally easy break-in miles and an additional 2,500 miles of straight down the interstate at 80 road-trips. No hard launches from standing start.

Love the car, but do think that Cadillac should do something about the diff. Think the car should be able to stand up to more "aggressive" driving in line with the way it has been marketed and projected. It may be that those of us without problems "so far" have been more lucky than good.
