Today makes 2 years since a drunk driver almost killed me.. People are killed and wounded everyday by the senseless acts of people who choose to drive under the influence, be it alcohol or drugs.

And on another note..
Please take the time to "smell the roses", because death is certain. You never know when it will sneak up on you and take you from this world.

Here is my story...
September 6th 2003 3:30am
One second I am riding down the highway on my 03 107ci Big Dog Chopper the next thing I know I am on the pavement. An 18 year old drunk & high on weed driver going down the wrong way on a 4 lane toll road hit me head on in a 1970 Chevy Pickup. The accident happened right as I topped a hill. There was no time for any braking nor to make any evasive maneuvers... I remember sittin up and seeing my leg twisted around 1 and half times like a rubber band. I also remember see a man with a orange vest trying to direct traffic from running me over as i lay in the middle of the road. I was thrown in the air and pancaked head first on the payment with no helment. I sustained a c1 fractured vertabrae, a dislocated right arm, fractured pelvis, & the loss of my left leg mid-thigh down. The State Troopers testified that they believe it was at least a 100mph impact and they could not beleive that I survived this. I was at least going 50mph in one direction and the truck that hit me was going at least 50mph in the other direction.. There was no braking by me nor the driver of the truck.... Head on with a 1970 Chevy Pickup on the highway.... My bike & the truck were both totaled.. The kid who hit me was sentenced to a half way house and 10 years probation by a jury. He got off with not going to jail because he did not have a prior record , and was a "good kid" (yeah right)... He can't drink, and a list of other stuff he cant do for 10 years.. But, in addition to all the rules he is to abide by he has to wear a new technology around his ankle called a SCRAM device. It is a device that monitors a persons alcohol consumption by testing your sweat 24 hours a day and reporting in twice an hour wirelessly..

Man, that sucks. You sure are tough though to have made it through that. You should have worn a helmet though!!! Don't mean to sound preachy, but its true; one of my friends had his brains splattered on the pavement when his bike crossed the street without looking both ways because he didn't wear one.

So, what did the guy do? Did he show any remorse or was he an ******* about it?

Thank you for sharing that story. I know today must be a very difficult day. It is amazing to see how people like yourself can take a terrible accident and try teach others with it. You must be a very strong individual. I lost one of my boyfriends when I was 14 to a drunk driver. The driver went off the road that he was walking on the side of and hit him. I myself have never drank and drove not even with just one drink. Well you are blessed, and please continue to share your story because it may save some lives. Thanks again. Julie

I know that I am blessed to make it out alive from that accident. Motorcycle vs Car on the Hiway in most cases is a guarateed toe tag for the person on the motorcycle (with or with out proper riding gear). If you look closely at the photos of the truck you can see the kid sitting in the drivers seat. He appeared very remorsefull at the trail.. But I don't know if he was upset with himself because of what he had done, or just scared that he may go to jail for what he had done...

wow Swangin, i really hate that for you but im glad you are still with us. my friend fell victim to a drunk driver 2 years ago. he was in a 88 honda accord and the driver of the other vehicle, 44 yo male, was in a 85 buick. the driver of the buick was of course drunk. my friend was on his way home from cruising bristol and decided to take the back roads home, i was supposed to ride with him but i figured id stay with another one of my friends. anyway, on the way home he got hit head on, the estimated speed of the buick was 70 mph and my friend was doing estimated 50 miles per hour, so at the time and point of impact it was 120 mph! my friend died instantly. the driver died 3 days later in the hospital. his blood alcohol was .378! was such a tradgedy. im glad i stayed with another of my friends cause i too would probably not be here. obviously God isnt finished with us yet!

Today isn't that bad. I have dealt with what happened and moved on.. I feel that everything happens for a reason.. The fact is that someone was going to be seriously hurt or most likely killed because of the drunk driver. It just so happened to be me.. I could ask myself why me, and be mad about it... Instead, I ask myself why not me... Because to sit and wish it did not happen to me, I am just wishing that it did happened to someone else. I wouldn't want to wish that on anyone.. I feel as if the best thing I can do is to tell my story and hopefully someone will think about it when they are faced with the choice of drinking and driving.

I don't know if it's just me or what but, I tend to forget that everyone on here has their lives outside of the forums. I never really thought about the personal issues all of us face when we're not here. It just seems that all we do is have fun and laugh but I never really took the time to think that everyone here faces trials and tribulations in their world. You know, we talk about the gas crisis and hurricance tragedy, but I never realized that the other parts of life such as personal loss whether it be family or possesions befall us all. Swangin-&-Bangin, I just felt that I have to tell you that I will put you in my prayers. You have been strong so far and I will pray that you continue to persevere and keep your head held high. You can use the story and your example as both an admonition and a tool to help others stay away from this type of behavior and the strength of the human spirit. Your story and the recent NO tragedy have really put into focus to cherish every minute of life as possible, because this very well could be the last. You this story hits home because I have a cousin right now who is paraplegic because of a drunk driver. He has lived the last 20+ years on a respirator. Thanks for sharing your story with us and stay strong.

well i thank God that there are people out there like you who are willing to share their story in hopes that next time someone will put the keys down. unfortunately these thing are going to happen but maybe one of the members or one of the visitors on this site will see this and think about it next time they get drunk. hey you posting this might save someones life out there. think on the positive, someone might not have to go through what you did all because you posted this story.

Thanks for sharing your story. My cousin's wife and 2 of his children were killed by a drunk driver in Pine Bluff, Arkansas a few years ago. You're a very lucky man to be alive today. Thanks for passing on a very powerful message.

Don't let someone else's misfourtune stop you from living your life.
Long as you understand the risks of riding a motorcycle, and accept
those risks, GO FOR IT!!!

I am glad you srurvived, but I am sorry for your ordeal.

Kids and their damn sense of invincibility...you think with all the awareness about the subject, people would NOT drink and drive.

Thank you for sharing and giving me something to show to my daughter to reinforce what I have been telling her.
