Hi all:

This weekend a couple of friends and I took the caddy for a Vegas run. It's the 1st time I have driven this car a long distance, about 390 miles from me. So everything is running fine, turned off my AC driving up the grapevine to avoid overheating. Going about 100mph through the desert with the AC blasting for the most part. There's a good size hill about 60 miles outside of Vegas on the 15. I was about 3/4 up the hill when the accelerator stopped responding. I would try to hit the gas to get up the hill and the engine was surging. I dont know a good way to put it, but it was as if the fuel to the engine was getting cut off and on intermittenly and then the engine slowly died. I pulled over to the side of the road and tried to find something wrong... no leaks or steaming or anything broke that I could see. I started the car again and tried to go. Same thing except it just seemed like the engine wasn't getting any fuel when I would try to accelerate. In fact the car seemed to idle okay but when I hit the gas it wouldn't respond. It was kinda like I had hit the fuel cut-off except I wasn't going 112 and that doesn't make the engine die.

Well I called roadside service and in the course of sitting there for about 1/2 hour, I started the car up again and drove off just fine, like nothing ever happened. :hmm:

I thought that maybe going up that hill with the AC on doing about 105 MPH caused the engine to cut out, but the symptoms didn't fit. My temp only read one notch over halfway up. It never went close to the red. Fuel injection problem maybe or fuel pump? or I am hoping just a clogged fuel filter? I hope it's not serious because after sitting there for 20 or 30 minutes it drove off just fine.

The thing is, after I got up that hill the engine temp guage never went past halfway up, and I didn't have any problems whatsoever going home.

If it was a engine overheat, does the limp home function act like that? and wouldn't it have to get hotter than that? And wouldn't I continue to have overheating problems? The only other thing was that when I stopped and checked the oil in vegas, it was about a quart low. The oil was changed about 3200 miles ago.

Any advice or experience on this problem is greatly appreciated guys. Thanks so much for suggestions.

Not an oil problem and not a overheating problem.

Sounds to me like your fuel pump not able to keep the fuel supplied at those continous high speeds. Did you happen to check for codes?
