View Full Version : Newbie questions... jpaitala 08-31-05, 01:54 AM Hello everyone.
A few days ago I acquired my first Cadillac, a 1974 Eldorado..... :yup:
Now I have a couple of questions about it.
What are the lenghts for the accessory belts (alt, ac) ?
Mine are in so bad condition that they cannot be used as a reference.
My speedometer shows correct readings but odometer run way behind....
1 mile in my odometer is something like 7 real miles. Is this common and do you have any suggestions on the fix?
Thanks. Not sure about your other questions, but the odometer is a fairly easy fix (if theparts are still available) When i worked for a Cadilac dealer as a mechanic back in the 80's you cold get a new odometer from the parts department. It was fairly easy to tear the gauge cluster apart and replace the odometer. You could even dial in the existing mileage.
Any goodparts house should be able to look up the correct belst for you
Good luck
Bobby ooops! Sorry, I didn't realise you were in finland. Might be a bit tougher tracking down parts there.
Try this link; http://www.rockauto.com/ jpaitala 09-21-05, 02:55 AM Rockauto is a good place but I didnt find the odometer from there.
Any other suggestions??
Thanks. davesdeville 09-21-05, 03:32 AM For the odometer you might have some luck finding someone who specializes in rebuilding odometers. I don't know how hard it might be to find someone in your area, there is one shop in my 500k city that will do it. Good luck. terrible one 09-21-05, 09:08 AM Or you could take a gamble and try one from the yard. Can't remember how, but it shows in my shop manual where you can adjust the miles, so you could get a different one, put in your real miles, and try that. guidematic 09-21-05, 10:21 AM Here's your belt specs:
AIR pump - Length 46.5" Width 0.50"
Generator: 42 and 63 amp Length 38.0" Width .470"
80 Amp Length 39.0" Width .470"
Power Steering Pump and AC Compressor: Length 60.5" Width 0.50"
These widths can be translated into .470"--15 series belt and the 0,50" belt, a 17 series.
This information can be found in the proper Cadillac shop manual. A wise investment.
Mike jpaitala 09-22-05, 02:28 AM Thanks guys.
I have been looking for a shop manual for '74 eldo but havent found one yet.
Hopefully soon because I'm just starting to "restore/modify" my eldo and the shop manual would give a lot of good information... guidematic 09-22-05, 08:20 AM The best place to find them is on Ebay. Or try this guy:

Try and look for a service managers edition or whatever its called. I have one. Its huge enough to kill those really big spiders with, about as big as an encyclipedia. It is my bible for my cadillac. The word of GM is spoken in this good book.
Im not sure if all cadillac manuals are like this or not, but its a good 3" thick.
In all seriousness, its huge and covers everything and anything with more than enough detail. Talks about rebuilding the trans, identifying cylinder pistons, rear end, speedo adjustments, wiring diagram for everything, vaccume line schematics.
Btw, if anyone needs a page scanned in from this thing, I can do it... PM me. davesdeville 09-23-05, 07:44 AM Can '73 Shop Manual be used on my '74 ?

There should be few changes between the 73 and 74. Like IIRC the headlight assembly is a bit differant and 74 was the first year of HEI... jpaitala 09-26-05, 03:37 AM I found 74 shop manual which I have paid now and I'm waiting for the seller to send it to me... Hopefully I'll get it soon. | |
