Hello to all.

I have a question regarding the "no charge" idiot light on the dash of a 1986 Fleetwood Bro., rear whell drive. 5.0 L 307. The light is dimly lit. I have changed the alt with no change. ALthough the original alt. would not power the engine with the headlights on. The "new" rebuilt alt. does. The light remains on dimly. When I disconnect the "two wire" connector from the alt, the light goes out. I can notice the rpm change when I disconnect the battery and reconnect the battery.

Can anyone direct me to the problem or where to check?
Thank you in advance

Chuckster.

An alt light that glows dim is usually a result of a bad diode in the alternator. Sometimes they still charge, but not fully, and can drain the battery when the cars not running.

Is this a new/rebuilt alternator? - or a used one?

Thanks Brougham! The alt. is rebuilt. Today I am taking it back for a different one. I am glad that yoiu mentioned that a bad diode will cause the battery to drain. When the old alt. was in and I started it, the battery did seem weak. Also the alternator seems to get very hot, just while idling.

Thank you again1
