View Full Version : The '79 is finally starting to look pretty. Night Wolf 08-28-05, 11:00 PM The rust on the door, the reason I hated to show the car off and stuff....
it didn't start out bad, but it got worse and worse, and it was on the drivers side, so I always saw it... it really made me think alot less of the car. Here it is the night I got the car:

Here it was a couple days ago... really nasty, and on the drivers side, so I saw it everytime I got in or out of the car.

top and bottom... not pretty.

Now, this is what $260 will get you.

Yeah, it is more shiney, but thats what happens when you paint with base coat/clear coat on a car with Lacqur paint.... I'd say they did a damn good job matching the paint. Night Wolf 08-28-05, 11:09 PM Here, I'll post some pictures the day after I got the car, and then today... it has come a long way when I look at it, and the funny thing is, I havn't spent much money at all on this car or much effort... the obvious things, the new wheels and tires (wheels we had at the house from my mothers car, tires from junkyard, but had the stubs on them) the door (obvisouly) and a few coats of wax really brought the color out. Under the hood I swaped the factory air cleaner for the Edelbrock (tho I sanded and painted the factory one up nice) and painted all the support braces. There is also a full tune up, cap/rotor, plugs/wires, hoses/belts etc...
the most in one shot I spent on this car would be the $260 for the door, the $150 for various tune up stuff and appearance mods, then the $100 for 4 tires.. really, thats it, brakes, suspension, interior, all that is left alone, and needs nothing, although I did put newer pattern fake wood trim on the dash, I hated the origanal stuff, but I still have it. Oh yeah, I hated the origanal hood ornament, just the crest, since it is a DeVille, thats what they got, the Fleetwood also had the wreath around the crest. So I went on ebay, and I found a brand new hood ornament for an 80's Brougham (same car) and I put it on, now I have my wreath, with the smaller crest (looks so much better) and it is new, and shiney, and, IMO makes the car look alot better... that was $25 well spent. oh, and I also have a brand new power antenna I just have to put in, the origanal one is broke, so that'll give the car a cleaner look as the antenna is stuck up right now... then lots of little things I did to the car... swap out the origanal 8-track player for an origanal cassette player, so now I can listen to my XM radio using the tape player etc... I have a tachometer on the car and when I get brave enough, I am going to add in a triple gauge cluster... then one day when I get lots of money, time and resources to, I am going to do a mild build on a Caddy 500ci. V8 and drop it in there, the TH400 will get a shift kit, and the 8.5" 10 bolt rear with 2.28 gears stays until I find the 2.78 Posi I want. That is when the fun begins :)
I got the car with 84,288 miles, it now has 90,570 miles, I paid $300 for it, and I know that now, in the shape it is in, fixed door, and with these fancy wheels and new tires and stuff, I could get $4,000 for the car, but I am not selling it. Overall I would say that is a good way to do business :)
So here are the pictures the day after I got the car.

27 year old daily driver, nearly origanal, I'd say she is lookin' good :) not mint, as the padded vinyl top has some cuts from age, some of the chrome is sun beat and hazy, paint is wearing thin in a few places, dash is cracked, seats/door panels are fadded, engine bay rusty... things that happen to cars... but honestly, now, I am proud to show the car off and stuff, it seems like the rust on that door was the gateway betweem just an old car to now being a nice classic.... but last night when the gas gauge was half way between 1/4 and 1/2 tank, and I filled up using regular (runs fine on it) and it cost $48 to go 230, reality sets in and tells me I can't drive this car as much as I used to, but thats ok. At $180/year to insure, I can afford the gas, plus, pulling up at the light next to the Honda Insight with the "gas saver" "save the eath" and other tree-hugging bumper stickers, looking over at the yuppie driving it, smiling, then revving the 425cubic inch, 7.0 liter V8 with gutted out cat, completly defeating the purpose of their car is such a great thing to do....13mpg and all, though it'll go up around 17mpg with the cruise set on the highway, atleast that was my highest cruising around 75mph, I think if I back down to 65mph it'll be even better... I should check the highway MPG sometime. tru504187211 08-28-05, 11:23 PM Lookin' verrry nice..! man that is a nice ghetto sled! i bet all the white people in that neighborhood get scared when you drive that thing through. seriously though, that is beautiful . oh you shoulda put a 56k warning on here or something, i just spent like 5 minutes waiting to post. caddycruiser 08-28-05, 11:51 PM That is AMAZING! Even more amazing is how little $$ actually first bought the car and then went into fixing it...just astounding.
Great job and you should be VERY proud of yourself! Night Wolf 08-29-05, 12:05 AM eh, this is country land, even the big cities aren't that bad... well, there are bad parts, but I don't go thru them... so I never worry about the black/white thing...
actually, I have never got any references to black/white... always just old mans car and stuff.
lol, sorry about the 56k thing, I have had cable for a couple years now and forget whats its like for 56k :)
Yeah, I hardly spent any money on this car, and it has come a long way... sure you coudl spend the money and get a new vinyl top and chrome and paint and stuff... but honestly, it dosn't bother me...
I am still "selling" the car... by selling, that means if someone has the cash for what I want, I'll sell it, but if not then I have no problem keeping it, as it'll only go up in value... now, since the door is fixed and stuff I coudl probably get $4,000 for it, so what would be my price, firm.... but I really don't want to sell it... but the money is always nice... but i have cool plans for the car.
I also have the bump stripes for both fenders, they just need to be glued back on... and I'll be adding power mirros to the car soon since my passenger mirror cables completly broke, making the mirror useless, and the driver side cables are very stiff... so, they get power :) DopeStar 156 08-29-05, 02:27 PM I'd go as far to say it looks mint. VERY nice. I never noticed until now that the 79 Sedans don't have as slanted of a back window as the Coupes do. SHE 'S LOOK'IN GOOD WOLFIE! :)
YOUR'S IS THE SAME COLOR AS MY COUP DE VILLE WAS. :cool2:
THE 7.0 WAS AN AWESOME ENGINE.
I PLACED A FEW OF YOUR PICS IN MY ROTATING SCREENSAVER. :lildevil: 90Brougham350 08-29-05, 04:59 PM Very attractive! They did a fine job with the door, at least from what I can see in the pictures. Looks good!
Brian addison_ii 08-29-05, 05:33 PM NightWolf, the 79 is sweet. The way you used to refer to it I thought it was rusty and looking like it's on its last leg but, damn it looks like it was on somebody's lot somewhere. Nice job with everything you've done to it. Night Wolf 08-29-05, 10:18 PM Yeah, the Coupes had a near 45* rear window :) I dunno, they just don't appeal to me...
But the whole roof line from the side is different then the ~'89 Brougham, same thing with the tunk, mine is more slanted down, and it makes everything after the rear window to look stubby... IMO the 80's Brougham has a much better roof line, so much more formal... but that 307 and 200R4....
the 425 is a blast, with the tach installed, it is really cool to see it idle at 600RPM in drive, then just go to 1,200RPM when accelerate after a light... the engine dosn' like to rev at all, and only goes above 2,000RPM when I am laying into it, which is opening the secondaries and downshifting, other then that it'll shift and stay right at 2,000RPM
Hopefully this week the modifed 472 intake manifold will go on along with the new carb, I am guessing maybe 20hp between the 2? maybe even better fuel mileage and stuff, I mean it is the origanal carb after 27 years and 90k miles. Then I am hoping to get the cross member form a 90's Caprice/Impala SS and put that in, then get a nice true dual exhaust setup. Besides that there really isn't much I can do with the stock 425, and I don't want to get into it because I want to build up a nice 500 some day... but the 425 runs amazing, and it stands up to my driving, which is a good thing :)
Yeah, I guess I never gave it the credit it deserved, that rust really got to me and made me look down on the car, but other then that it is good, the cracked dash, fadded interior, ripped vinyl top etc... I can live with that.
I don't want to restore this car, because there are always really mint cars like this with 50k miles on ebay for cheap, so it isn't cost effictive to restore mine, but I will keep it in good shape, and someday when it gets 500 power, it'll be a fun toy... not origanal, and not restored.... just fun :) Stoneage_Caddy 08-29-05, 10:35 PM looking good ....much beatter over the "before pics" davesdeville 08-30-05, 02:20 AM That's like the exact opposite of what happened to my 78 Fleetwood when I had it :( Looks good though. caddydaddy 08-30-05, 09:56 AM Looks good! I'm not a big fan of those yellow Devilles, but it's still in better shape than my '79! caddieboy 08-30-05, 11:03 AM The first car I ever drove was a creme '79. Well.... the first car I ever drove after getting my licence, anyway. That thing had power!!! I swore I could beat my friend in his 5.0 Mustang. Perhaps that's not true (although he wasn;'t a great stick driver) but I used to get thrown into the seat in that beast. I was a scrawny kid though. :D
In any case, nice ride! I'd buy it from you if gas wasn't so expensive up here in Canada. Night Wolf 08-30-05, 11:57 PM Looks good! I'm not a big fan of those yellow Devilles, but it's still in better shape than my '79!
Beige, not yellow :)
I found out the real color is Laramie Beige, not Colonial yellow like I thought :) | |
