I am new to this board but I have noticed that there is plenty of expertise out there, unlike some other boards, where folks just call each other names!

I have been offered $9800.00 for my 68 Fleetwood 60 S. It is a low mileage,
high #3, low #2 car. The only thing wrong with it is a leaky exhaust (imagine
that) and a broken cruise control and AC system. It is totally rust free and is original, except the battery and tires. The interior is immaculate and full leather.

What do you think?

I think that it's a very fair offer. The buyer has not a clue what the final cost will be of fixing the cruise, A/C and exhaut leak. Should I venture a guess that all done, he might be into the car for $11,000 ? Figuring on $1,100 worth of repairs, seems fair.... Fixed, YOU could probably get $11,500 to $12,000.
I am not sure how strong the market actually is on these cars, but, truth be told, you only NEED one buyer!!
Don't forget, the buyer always offers less than it's really worth, as all buyers think that the seller is not telling 100% of the problems, especially the hidden troubles, so the buyer always leaves a security cushion of extra $$$ for himself. If it were *MY* car, I'd fix all 3 of those things, so I'd have to make NO apoligies and go for $12,750.00.

Thanks Sandy, I appreciate the reply. I have actually thought about doing what you
suggest, but I really fear the AC repair bill. I told the buyer that the AC system was a potential money pit, especialy with that infernal vacuum controlled temp wheel.

This is one of the best riding and driving cars that I have ever had, but no AC in Ohio in August can be an "issue".

Thanks again, Dave

As a retired car salesman for over 27 years, I can tell you from first hand experience that a perfect car, cannot be faulted. A car than cannot be faulted, will bring the last dollar. Okay, they might say, "I don't like leather" (and if it has cloth, then it's "I don't like cloth") This, just a ploy (and a weak one at that) to chop down the price. This is easily combatted by simply walking away from the buyer, ending discussion right then & there. In 99% of the cases, the buyer will indeed walk AFTER you ! You have closed the door to discussion. One of 2 things will follow:

He/She will ask, "How much deposit do you want" *OR* they will leave. IF they leave, you never had nuttin anyway/

Pics would be nice and make it easier to judge the value but that sounds like a pretty good price he's offering.

I will try to get some photos loaded up for the car. It really is a "survivor".
I know, you've heard that before, but this one really is good.

I really appreciate all of the feedback on this site, and by the way, watch out for a scam from AUTOMACHINES INT. LONDON, UK. This is one of those scams where they claim that they want to buy your Caddy and will send a
cashier's check, you know what happens next. They got my ad from HMN.

That $9800.00 they want to give you is probably around what its worth if theres nothing wrong with it. Theres nothing really special about those years.

I have a 68 sedan de ville which I've restored to about a number 3 condition. It's a good car.

Collector car insurance guys appraised it at $8000 (cdn) which I feel is quite inflated. If I had to sell in a hurry realistically I think I'd get about $4000.

60 Special is more desirable but it's still just a sedan. If you really want to move it take the $9800 and run! Not a lot of people want these things.

The A/C isn't THAT complicated. All the real tricky parts are available remanufactured.

Seems you say that about every vintage of Cadillac brought up here.

Seems like people like dreaming about what theyre worth.

You think its worth more? NADA doesn't. It doesn't appeal to a large majority, only Cadillac enthusiasts.

That said, it's a fair price. If your looking to sell it, go for it, its a good deal. If you werent really looking to sell it, it's not such a killer deal that you would be crazy to pass it up.

Hello Dave

I see that your car is not listed in the for sale classifieds any longer. Can you advise if it has been sold?

I am looking for a 68 Fleetwood. Yours looks to be the best I have seen to date.

Thanks

Hello Brian:

It is still available and I thank you for your inquiry. I took it off line because I kept getting those bogus inquiries from scam artists e.g. "I am reknown collector of international motor cars and will send you a cashier's cheque". You know the routine, I'm sure.

It is a great original old car and what you see is what you get. You could drive it anywhere, including AZ, if the gas expenses did not make you go broke.

Let me know if you want more photos and thanks again.

Dave
