View Full Version : I Really Really Want This Car! DopeStar 156 08-25-05, 01:46 AM Glorious car! 1969 Sedan de Ville in black with purple metallic flake. Custom paint job but otherwise all original! Perfect car! Virtually flawless. Today I have felt the awesome power of the 472 and almost shit myself. The only problems are the car has a hole in the trunk but it's not huge, golf ball sized, steering needs fixing since the steering wheel is 45 degrees off just about. I was also told tranny fluid leaks from the drive shaft but doesn't do it while driving, only if it's sitting for a while. I love this car, it's so bad ass, especially the black/purple paint. The owner said she wants $5,200 for it. I could see myself getting her down to like $3,000. Here's some pics. Camera phone, sorry if they suck. Night Wolf 08-25-05, 02:15 AM wants $5,200 but talk her down to $3,000?!?
the 472 in that car is probably similar to the 425 in my '79.... tho compared to the 307, it dosn't take much to surprise you :) sizanjdf 08-25-05, 03:09 AM the 472 is alot more impressive than the 425 and the 307 is just sad. Ive owned all of them and cant wait till I get my 500 going, but I will be happy with the 472 in my 74 limo till then. I can definately see you in that car Dope! DopeStar 156 08-25-05, 03:58 AM I can definately see you in that car Dope!
Yeah! Haha my favorite things about that car are mainly the engine and the color. I love the two color paint. Black at night, purple in the light. ANd when are we gonna stop making fun of my 307? I would never get rid of my '89 Fleetwood..... :crying: Yeah! Haha my favorite things about that car are mainly the engine and the color. I love the two color paint. It's a beaut! I guess you aren't too concerned about gas mileage. :shhh: ;)
You can always keep a Honda Civic in the trunk for when the gauge drops. :D davesdeville 08-25-05, 06:34 AM That's pretty sweet. Is the alignment off or is the wheel just installed crooked? If it's just installed crooked that's a fairly easy fix. Scottie in Alabama 08-25-05, 07:22 AM Yeah! Haha my favorite things about that car are mainly the engine and the color. I almost did Dope, shame on me :hide: , but drove her for what was supposed to be the last time today and fell in love all over again. Close call, man I love that car! But the potential buyer will be pissed, who cares right? Night Wolf 08-25-05, 09:12 AM well, engine for engine, yes the 472 is better, but when you compare the cars that they are in, I would think performance would be similar... 472 is more power, but also alot more car to move around....
the 307 jokes will never stop until there are no more left... even then, we will all think back, and laugh.
My mother rented an '05 Nissan Sentra 1.8s while her car was getting worked on one time, she kept saying how much she loved the car, but it was kinda small... she was like, it is really powerful too, and she was shocked when I told her it was a tiny 4banger :) Pianoman72 08-25-05, 02:34 PM That car is freaking awesome, man. Just don't know how anyone could afford the gas to drive it. I would want to drive it every day. DopeStar 156 08-25-05, 03:47 PM I would love to get it as a weekend car. Just a little classic for me to enjoy. I could give a crap about the gas since I wouldn't be using it for anything other than local driving. I had a dream about it last night, it was sweet. davesdeville 08-25-05, 06:28 PM My mother rented an '05 Nissan Sentra 1.8s while her car was getting worked on one time, she kept saying how much she loved the car, but it was kinda small... she was like, it is really powerful too, and she was shocked when I told her it was a tiny 4banger :)
Dahahah... you guys should go test drive a V. :D cmgrafmc 08-25-05, 08:07 PM So THIS is what is taking all your time, Dope? Some lousy old car that is in no way attractive or a classic? I mean, it doesn't even have curb feelers! Get back to work on the lights!

Yeah, the '69 472 is a great engine! Plenty of power...

I think 98 mph is a little low, cuz my car has the 3.08 gears and it will run over 100 mph...It was an accident...I didnt mean to drive a limo over 100 mph it just wants to go. By the way...The performance of these cars from my experience are not at all. My 86 fleetwood was a sled. the 77 coupe deville was alright, and my 74 is nearly 6000lbs and more fun to drive than either because of the 472. DopeStar 156 08-26-05, 01:10 PM I'm gonna start saving up! I need to get myself some 472 power. Bet you can get 30 hp more and a lot better ignition with an HEI and some good ignition recurving. The compression is a headache, but can be delt with fairly well.
I have a mod that worked well on my T/A if you are interested. Cheap, and works well to help almost any engine (HEI's only, non computer). Low compression really helps a LOT, high too, will help reduce some pinging.

6 mpg!? Something's wrong there. My '76 Fleetwood limo averages 10-11 mpg.
BTW, the '71-'76 limos came with 3.15 gears. My '76 limo weighs 6,040 lbs and even with that weight, it has plenty of power. I've even burned rubber with it a few times from a dead stop.
Yes, the mid-'80 Cadillacs had nowhere near the power of the pre-'77s.
Obviously, 98 mph is not the top speed of that '69. So many people wrote to Motor Trend asking why their test cars could "only" go 90 or 95 mph, that in later issues they put this note at the bottom of the test specs..."Speed in gears are at shift points (limited by length of track) and do not represent maximum speeds."

The actual top speed of a '69 Cadillac de Ville is 120-125 mph.
Mechanix Illustrated magazine tested a '71 limo and got a top speed of 110 mph. and a 12.3 sec 0-60 mph time and 18.1 second 1/4 mile. yeah youre right, the pictures suck :D . can you get better pics? i wanna see this hole your are talking about. if you can get it down to 3k are you going to buy it? and how soon are we talkin? looks nice man, if i had the money i would definitely go for it. there is a 60 something CDV gold, drop top sitting down the road, well it was yesterday but not today. i am going to stop next time i see it and get the price. caddieboy 08-26-05, 06:24 PM I really want this car... The guy wants $12,000 US and I'd pay that much if I had the money or thought it was worth it. It has the E&G grill but I prefer the original. I don't know if the original grill is under the E&G or what.
The great thing about the car is it's in Mint condition, doesn't need any work, and is very close to what I want in terms of interior colour, body colour and engine. It's a 5.7! If he took $9,000 US I would snatch it up. At only 13,000 miles, can't go wrong. $12,000 seems a bit high.
Only one concern, I'm not sure why the shocks needed replacement. Do they wear or need replacing even if they haven't been used? caddieboy 08-26-05, 06:27 PM I really want this car... hmm, do you have 3k to just drop on it or what? it looks pretty nice. BluEyes 08-29-05, 01:17 AM I love my '70 SDV, so I'd say go for it.
The ride is really nice. It doesn't handle *that* bad for such a heavy car, just avoid twisty mountain roads while going fast. Plus, there is more space in there than any other car I've seen.
I consistently get double-digit fuel economy and around 15 on open highway driving with the cruise set at 65 or so. Don't hot-rod it, drive it like a Cadillac was meant to be driven and you'll do about as well as some of the big SUV's thesedays even without EFI, overdrive, or electronic ignition.
4700# is NOT realistic unless it is a 'dry' weight. Mine came in at 5520#. Even accounting for a full tank, fullsize spare and two people it's a 500# car. Just trivia though, who cares about weight on these cars - the engine certainly doesn't!
The compression has never been a problem. I run premium, and a lead substitute. I've been told it's not nesscary, but it's cheap to run it just in case. It gets pretty hot around here, and we have plenty of long steep hills, but I have never heard any rattling even with advanced timing, and the car certainly has never hesitated.
Talk them down as far as they will go, and then jump all over it. DopeStar 156 08-29-05, 02:20 PM Wah finally. I was having a problem and couldn't see this page, but I was still able to post. Anyway, I don't have $3k YET but I'm gonna start a waiting tables job and try to make the money before the winter, then I'll definately try to grab it. It's in comparable shape to my 89 Fleetwood in terms of mechanical running condition and cosmetic condition. I will try to go back and get pictures with my digital camera but I'll have to think of a way to do it without looking like a freak being the second time I bothered this lady about the car. I'm excited though, this car is super sexy. addison_ii 08-29-05, 06:04 PM Dopestar, hmm what we could call the soon to be new ride of yours. The "Grape Ape"
The "Purple Pearl" Machine. I 've got it. The Purple Mean Compact Car Eating Machine. The car looks good from what I can see. I'd say go for it. I love my '70 SDV, so I'd say go for it.

That's interesting... I also own a '70 SDV! Yes, the ride is nice and mine actually handles quite well- minimal lean in corners and I can go 50 mph in a 35 mph posted curve if I want to push it that hard.
I've only driven it about 2,000 miles during the one year one month I've owned so I haven't checked mileage. I did have it weighed, though, at a recycling station place. In fact, here is the weight of all my Cadillacs:
'69 Fleetwood Brougham...... 5,060 lbs.
'70 Sedan de Ville............... 4,920
'76 Fleetwood Limousine...... 6,040 DopeStar 156 08-29-05, 11:54 PM Dopestar, hmm what we could call the soon to be new ride of yours. The "Grape Ape"

Haha, Hmmm.... Good point, it's gonna need a bad ass name.... Vanity plates are a must.... It needs a hot name though.... so are you getting it or what? the suspense is killing me. DopeStar 156 08-30-05, 11:38 PM so are you getting it or what? the suspense is killing me.
I want it definately, but I only have $750 to my name right now. I'm gonna try to get myself a higher paying job so I can save up and hopefully before the winter I'll have a new car I can't drive until the spring. LOL! you gotta way to go then dont you. it could be sold by then and are you sure she'll drop to 3k in the first place? you know how some of these collectors are, that thing could be gone in a week. why dont you get a loan or have your parents co-sign for you and get it? DopeStar 156 08-31-05, 02:15 AM Not sure I could get a loan for a 36 year old car. She's not really a collector, it's just been in her family for a long time and can't keep it. If I can conjure up the money and it's still there then I'll grab it, if it's gone, then it's gone. I'm about 99% sure my parents won't shell out any type of loan money for this. This is really my only option. davesdeville 08-31-05, 06:26 AM You can't get a CAR loan for a car that old but there are other types of loans. Pianoman72 08-31-05, 02:17 PM There's no reason to go into debt to buy someting that will only cost you more money in the future.
Remember you'll have to insure it, register it, have it inspected, etc.
I love the car but in your situation I think you should hold on to your $$$ at this point. davesdeville 08-31-05, 03:47 PM Classic car insurance would be great for this kind of nice weekend cruiser. It's hella cheap too.
I'm not urging you to go into debt though because that's rarely a good financial decision unless you're trying to build credit. DopeStar 156 08-31-05, 06:08 PM Oh no, by no means can I afford loan payments on top of my $384.00 a month car insurance bills. I'm assuming you've had some..."issues" in the past, too... DopeStar 156 09-01-05, 02:16 AM I'm just insuring liability on my Brougham. It's high because I live in NJ, and I have like 5 insurance points. One accident and one speeding ticket. BluEyes 09-01-05, 07:22 PM Holy sheet! My insurance is $100 a month, and that's for six cars! I'm hoping that will go down some as well when I turn 25... davesdeville 09-02-05, 07:22 AM Damn that's a lot of insurance... I have liability on the ETC and pay the same amount you do - every 6 months instead of monthly.
On a similar note, thank goodness for defensive driving school. I'd have 12 points on my license now which I think is an automatic suspention, which would last about 6 months, without good ol' driving school. DopeStar 156 09-02-05, 01:36 PM Yeah, people in NJ always get screwed on insurance I hear...... creepingdeath 09-04-05, 04:29 PM That's one sweet ride. Buy! Buy! Buy! j/k. It is a nice looking car from the pictures, but would have to do a thorough rust inspection in person to make a solid judgement. The SDV models do not bring big $$$ so IMO I would safely say it is not worth more than $2900. Goodluck! DopeStar 156 09-05-05, 01:03 PM Maybe you could offer her some "other" services...

Happy Labor Day to all. It's Bar B-Q time!!:D Night Wolf 09-05-05, 11:09 PM Yeah, classic car insurance, I pay $13/month (like $160/year) on the '79... for full coverage, full glass etc... if it is considered totaled in an accident, I get a check for $5,000 (need to up that a little tho)
my monthly insurance is $220, that is for 3 cars, and life insurance. I have no points, drivers ed, defensive driving, good student, blah blah, but also an inexperienced operator surcharge (like 20%) that gets removed my 3rd year of a license (next year) so overall, I am not that bad on insurance.
If your father is willing to pay for it if she says $1,000, then why can't he just put $1,000 towards it if she says more? DopeStar 156 09-06-05, 01:54 AM If your father is willing to pay for it if she says $1,000, then why can't he just put $1,000 towards it if she says more?
Haha you don't know my dad. The reason he said that is because he knows she won't sell me that car for $1,000 and that's what ended up happening. I offered her $1,200 because $200 is all I can really afford to throw in. Soooooo she said she wouldn't go any lower than $4,000 because her mother is the co-owner of the car and doesn't want to sell it anyway. The only reason she's letting her daughter put a sign on the car and put it on her lawn is because she thinks no one will buy it. So it's a sabotaged sale, it's almost like a tease.Sad though, if this mother wasn't involved I'm really sure I'd have that car for $1,200. She's had it up for sale and in a special interest paper for months now and I'm the only one who's come out to see it. Damn damn damn!!! I told her if anything changes to call me. | |
