Worst overall was a 1987 Chevy Nova (Corolla). It was unbelievably dependable but hideously loud and ugly. It died at 186k when the timing belt went. I could have replaced the belt, but by then, after being stolen once, joyridden once, wrecked once, and beaten to hell, I had to let it go.

I havent had any 'bad' cars yet, since I tend to buy them old for cash. I did have a 1988 Mazda 929 where the oil pan or something went bye-bye and the car threw a rod. It had 190k at that point and it was right after a road trip where my average speed was 130mph. :P

Hate to say it, but my 94 STS was one of my least reliable and most expensive to repair and maintain...I put a new motor in her, A/C went out every two months, every damned wheel sensor on her went out about two weeks after I bought her, the top was tearing, the seats were torn, the radio sucked, the bose speakers, although I know they are awesome when working, were blown, the new motor developed a low oil pressure problem, the tranny was starting to slip, numerous tranny trouble codes, shocks were shot, door had a weird "knock" or "tap" sound in it because of the angle that the seatbelts were at when I got out of the car, and I closed the door on the seatbelt latch one too many times...among many other nuisances and major problems. I still love her though, and miss her dearly...been gone for one week tomorrow, and I ALMOST wish I hadn't dumped her on a friend in San Diego...who, by the way, knew exactly what he was getting into. He was my beer-getter and tool-chaser while doing all the repairs over the last year. I am still looking into buying a much newer one, however, which will still have a warranty on it. Maybe even, in about two years, getting an 05 STS, or, depending on my financial situation, an XLR.

I say the Maserati is the worst, but these follow it closely:

1993 Citroen XM: It looked very sleek, but the break/suspension/power steering fluid totally drained out of it on three occasions, resulting in my having to stop the car with the aid of a grass verge!

1995 Vauxhall Astra Sport: this was great for the first year my wife drove it but after that the rear suspension screwed up, among other things and Vauxhall replaced the car with another 1995 Sport, they were both Pineapple Yellow

2001 Mercedes Benz SLK: roof jammed repeatedly, got stuck down in a thunderstorm, causing all the electrics to short out an meaning the car needed a total rewire. Also the rear wheel fell off after 170 miles of ownership! My wife managed to control it but it needed bodywork for the damage

Worst car I ever owned, was a 1982 Buick Riviera. The car was beautiful. I bought it when it was ten years old. The exterior and interior, looked new, and it had about 80k miles, if I remember right. I paid $2,200 for it. I owned it for three months. In that three months, it needed a rebuilt transmission, AC accumulator, alternator, rebuilt carb, and many other parts. The major problem with the car, was the engine oil pressure. The car had a 4.1 liter engine (6 cylinder), which is the same block as the 3.8. The main bearings, as I understood it, were softer than the crankshaft itself, causing a low oil pressure situation. The only way to fix it, was replace the main bearings. Not a job I wanted to do, after having the car for three months, paying the initial $2,200, and spending another $3,000, for the various parts. So that car cost me almost $1,800 per month to own. I still want to buy another '79-'85 Riv, but it will have to have the 307 V8.

Hmm, as far as reliability goes I'd say my 78 Fleetwood Brougham, but I still liked it better than my 86 Dodge Omni. The clutch on the Omni was on its way out when I got the car at 170k or so on the original clutch, and the 78 developed a rod knock due to what I'll call "improper maintenence."

1966 GTO Convertible. POS ! Bought it new, paid $ 3,310.00 emptied entire bank account. Had it 1 year to the week. It was in dealer's shop 161 days of that year. I was granted visitation rights. After that, I switched to Chrysler Corp Cars for the next 20 years. My next GM car was the 1993 Sixty Special I have now. 27 years I stayed away.

1989 Volve 740 GLE sedan.

I can't remember a day that I didn't have to look under the hood to make sure that the vavle cover gasket hadn't disintegrated. All the gauses used to die whe I would back out over the bump in my friends driveway (I'd have to pound my fist on the dash to get them to come back). Half the tailights always seem to be burnt out, even after I replaced them. The radio worked only half of the time, and the tranny had a bad habbit of slipping when it thought you gave the car too much gas. The engine also sounded like a diesel, which I thought was strange since it was a Slant Four Gas engine....hmmm :hmm:

I'll tell you what though, it was the best car to do 360's down my friends street in the winter. Very stable. Never hit a curb once..hehe. :D

Worst car I've had by far (and I've had a lot of cars) was a 1976 Triumph TR-7 which I bought during the fuel crisis. The car had only 3500 miles on it when purchased and looked like it just came out of the factory. Great fun to drive WHEN IT RAN! Car would be cruising along at 60 - 65 MPH and decide to shut off...... pull to the side for a few minutes, start her up, and she'd be ok for a few days (or weeks.) Also went thru alternators like they were M & M's. In general, I was told that all British cars of that era have much-to-be desired electrical systems. After all kinds of repairs I finally got disgusted and left it parked. Several months later a fellow I knew bought it for his kid and replaced the entire electrical system, after which the kid took the car out and totaled it! He wasn't killed, thank God, but banged up pretty good.

It's been all American (mostly GM) for me since.

Ah, you bought British Leyland, and in the 70s no less! No offence intended, but when we are young we are silly arent we?

I sold my pristine 1974 Cortina to buy a Rover SD1 V8 new in 1978, and my dad gave me another car use when it was wet, windy, cold, snowing, too sunny or the Rover just didnt feel like starting.

I loved her, and maintain she was one of the best cars i owned. I still love her, i was called grandad for driving her, and im glad i dont own her.

83 Renault alliance. I bought it with 30000 miles and asked myself how bad could it be? - unbelievably bad. It was not unusual to spend a day fixing it just to try and keep it going for another week. Even the door striker broke off the door post, cracked the tin all around it and it broke free of the post!
I would not take a French car as a gift!

Ha, this thread was incredibly useful for myself...

In my first post in this thread I mention that I had sold my cadillac "one week ago from today." Just yesterday I was trying to figure out WHEN I had sold that car. The date on my post was August of '05 which means It was two years and two weeks ago, now, when I sold the car! :)

Thanks whoever brought this back. It was helpful to ME at least!

Nothing wrong with digging up old posts, it lets the fun start again, atleast for me. It's a really hard question though... I'd have to say from a sheer reliability standpoint, my '85 Jag XJ... horrid, disdainful machine, but she was absolutely, jaw-droppingly gorgeous. It was like marrying a supermodel, only to find out she was the most useless human being ever brought into existence. We tried to make it work, we really did, but we filed for separation after only two years - irreconcilable differences. I sold her to a guy in town who still has it, I see him out in his garage every weekend still working on this or that. I feel bad sometimes, like I should pay him alimony or something.

But on the opposite end of the spectrum there was my '83 AMC Eagle wagon - she was the fat, ugly one who always did right by me. Eagle was way ahead of it's time with their four-wheel drive system. With the 4.2L straight-six and a five speed, that thing just ran, and ran, and ran, and ran. All of it combined into a vehicle with Jeep-like capability and a car-like ride, it truly was a remarkable machine, a "crossover" ahead of it's time. The only problem was that you wanted to keep driving it because you knew as soon as you stopped, you'd have to get out and look at it. Wish I would have kept that one though, she was the complete antithesis of that rancid bitch Jag.

I had a '53 Studebaker Chicken Hawk that wouldn't stay sold. I'd get a down payment and maybe a little more and I'd have to go repo it and drag it home. I finally pulled the dirtiest trick I could think of on the last buyer. When he quit paying I signed the title over to him and gave him the car.

Well, since the thread refuses to die... My worst was of course, a Chrysler product... big surprise. 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the "all new" for that year 4.7L V8. It's really the one that sticks out over all the others. Stuck keylock cylinders leaving me stranded, dead batteries, noisy differentials, deforming interior pieces, blown speakers left and right and just on and on and on. I traded it in on a car that should have been the second worst, but actually wasnt outside of a broken catalyst, a 2003 VW Passat GLX. Only car to this day I ever bought new.

nothing i've kept my hands off of has failed me...

worst car over all... 2003 VW GTI...i had to replace the entire ignition system almost 2 times... part by part by part...

new coils, new plugs new everything...

worst modified car ever, i had a 1986 RX7 with a worked over 350 in it... it was cobbled together to go fast not to be reliable, it didnt have a working guage cluster other than a tach, and no fuel guage... it was a bear to drive and it had heads about twice as big as the cam in it... couldnt run at idle below 2000 rpm

Yup, 93's, especially the early builds were very very problematic cars. After 96 though, they became nearly bulletproof (except for the shitty viscous coupling based 249 TC). Unfortunately the cycle started all over again in 1999 and never really got that much better.

Well yes and no. If I was strictly talking about motor problems I'd agree with you (and yes, the 1996 4.0L GC my mom recently sold was in comparison one of the most *reliable* cars weve ever owned), however the problem with my 1999 was the fact that everything *AROUND* and connected TO the motor fell apart. The engine was fine.

Actually, I dont recall ever having a problem with the engine. But that was a long time ago.
