View Full Version : What was the best car you ever owned? mccombie_5 08-24-05, 02:45 PM Just thought I'd find out everyones best car....
I couldnt get my list down to one, so i have four, and they were all equally as good for different reasons. Here they are:
1995 Bentley Turbo
1989 Jaguar XJ12
1978 Rover SD1
1977 Jaguar XJ6C
What is everyone elses? 1988 Mustang LX 5.0 (still have it)
1989 Cadillac Sedan DeVille (close second so far)
1989 Merc Sable LS 3.8 mccombie_5 08-24-05, 02:52 PM 1988 Mustang LX 5.0 (still have it)

Is that Mustang just in case amidlife crisis pops up on you? :p 1981 Buick Skylark with a 4 speed and V6(the small Cavalier sized version). Couldn't kill it. Ran forever. One fast little S.O.B too! 1968 Plymouth Sport Fury. Greatest car ever! I drove the HELL out of it for a year, raced it all the time, took it offroad many times, jumped it, ran a hundred and thirty across Northern CA in the middle of July without ever getting over 195 degrees, and it was big enough that I was comfortable in it. Finally yanked the motor and trans and gave it away when a tie rod and the torsion bar broke and I decided I wanted a truck. Horrible thing is, the motor that was in it, I put in my old Dodge truck, and the truck just drove away on a trailer...about ten minutes ago...Had to get rid of her for $$$, and I miss the hell out of her already. Is that Mustang just in case amidlife crisis pops up on you? :pNo, actually, that was my commuter car for the hour commute (one way) that I mentioned on another thread. I averaged 25+ mpg on the freeway, bought the car with 44,000 miles on it, drove the clock around 3 times before giving it to my daughter who is still driving it.
It currently has over 330,000 miles on it. The clutch has never been replaced.
For the mid-life crisis I hope to obtain a nice clean 1968 L88 or if not, I'll settle for a nice Harley. mccombie_5 08-24-05, 03:02 PM No, actually, that was my commuter car for the hour commute (one way) that I mentioned on another thread. Geeeez you drove it to death, then gave it to your daughter to kill! Respect. I know what my midlife crisis car will be
Lotus Elise 1968 Plymouth Sport Fury. Greatest car ever! Lotus EliseWell, no, I couldn't seem to kill the beast so I thought my daughter surely would. :hmm:
It still runs like a champ. That car is more reliable than a Timex!! mccombie_5 08-24-05, 03:07 PM Well, no, I couldn't seem to kill the beast so I thought my daughter surely would. :hmm:

Hahaha
Luckily my daughter is a car nut :yup: she cand rive very well already Nah, wasn't a 440 by the time I got it...originally was, but I got it with a 383 4bbl in it...threw a big cam in, along with a new edelbrock carb...she screamed...second gear at about 38 mph would light the tires up every time...kinda like the STS, but faster, bigger, louder, smellier, and uglier. Hahaha
Luckily my daughter is a car nut :yup: she cand rive very well alreadyMy youngest is the pickiest. She hates my Caddy :(
She has ideas of getting a 1964, 5 or 6 Mustang Coupe. :ill: That means I'll have to find one cheap and restore the bugger! :banghead:
I've got to get another job....... And yes, a few of my buddies did call me Luke back in the year after high school when I drove this thing... I love the body of it, the Sport Fury had the semi-fastback, a lot like a '68 Dart GTS, but about two feet longer...never seen one like it, lots of Fury III's, but never seen a Sport Fury like it...damnitt...I miss that one... '89 Pontiac Formula 350
'87 Buick Grand National
'99 Chevy Corvette
The rest are not very memorable ShadowLvr400 08-24-05, 03:30 PM Right now.... Still my big 3... The Eldo, the Fleetwood, and my late grandfather's Lincoln Town Car... The Eldo and the Lincoln are lost to trees, along that same roadway... The Fleetwood is still very early in her project life. mccombie_5 08-24-05, 03:30 PM My youngest is the pickiest. Hahaha! good luck with the 'tang, my daughter has her eye on my wifes Astra GSi, because she knows she isnt getting that Monaro.
my sons have both been given cars, so she knows that she will getone if she does well in school 88 Chevrolet Silverado Custom Trucks of Texas edition. 310,000 TOUGH miles, it was an electricle company equipment hauling truck. Sucker was beat all to hell on the bed, totaled once and had the engine and transmission replaced and it still drove like brand new. I when I got it, it only needed 200 bucks worth of work and that was it, I finally sold it when gas prices skyrocketed and I got my Seville. 2002 Cadillac Escalade Ext! 1988 Mustang LX 5.0 (still have it)
1989 Cadillac Sedan DeVille (close second so far)
1989 Merc Sable LS 3.8
That's funny, Kev. I had an '88 Saleen Mustang convertible that I rate as one of the WORST cars I ever had!
My best ever is a 1990 Acura Legend LS.
I've gotta be honest, this Expedition is moving right up the list. mcf1000x2003 08-24-05, 03:37 PM 1988 Toyota Supra Spec v twin turbo ended up getting 468whp in to it
2000 Z28 + Vortech S/C 483 WHP That's funny, Kev. I had an '88 Saleen Mustang convertible that I rate as one of the WORST cars I ever had!A shame. The Saleens were suposed to be something special, at least they were priced that way if I recall. I don't know how mine has stayed tough all these years. If I were superstitious I might suspect that my car sucked up the goods from yours and others. wOOooooOOOooOooOo........ Nah he was Daisy :halo:
Thanks Mac! Aren't you the one in the skirt! :):):) mccombie_5 08-24-05, 03:40 PM Thanks Mac! Aren't you the one in the skirt! :):):)
nah thats the son, i am the sensible 18 looking guy with trousers on :) A shame. The Saleens were suposed to be something special, at least they were priced that way if I recall. I don't know how mine has stayed tough all these years. If I were superstitious I might suspect that my car sucked up the goods from yours and others. wOOooooOOOooOooOo........
I wanted a basic V6, but the dealership didn't have one. They kept discounting the Saleen until I couldn't turn it down.
I kept it for almost two years and didn't lose any money on it, so I can't really complain. I'm sure yours is fine, but the Saleen was just a joke--too rough, too many squeaks and rattles, and the engine wasn't any more powerful than what you have.
I had an '83 mustang convertible that I still love to this day. Too bad I didn't keep it. mccombie_6 08-24-05, 03:51 PM Ive never owned a car, but i will be getting an eldo soon if im nice to my dad mccombie_5 08-24-05, 03:53 PM Ya think? mccombie_6 08-24-05, 03:54 PM Ya think?

I envy the wagon and the Fury...but the Desoto, didja mean 57? Cause if you do, I betcha wish you still had that one!!! I've got a '52 available to me, but don't think I'll ever get to it...its my dads, parked here in CA at a friends house, he's in KY, and said I could have it...no where to store and no money to restore though... 02BlackSRX 08-24-05, 07:45 PM my dodge caddymonkey30 08-24-05, 07:47 PM best car I have ever owned....

1968 Impala Custom Coupte 327/300, TH400, Duals, Glasspacks, chrome deep dish wheels.
1994 Caprice Classic LT1 power everything.
The 1994 STS has gotten off to a rocky start reliability wise, it is gonna have to last 10 years to get near the cars on that list! 1992 Infiniti Q45 - Quick and slick. Looks great on chrome. V8 that just won't quit.
1988 Mazda 929 - A car with as much character as a Saab and steering with more feedback than a microphone. Booyeah! I fell in love with it and don't really know why.
1988 Nissan Sentra - Slow and overweight, but endured asian teenage driving and three rear-enders. There's a place in my heart for that durable hunk of garbage. Dadillac 08-24-05, 10:27 PM The best car I have ever owned, was actually a truck. I bought a 1997 Ford F-150 4x4 Supercab Flairside pick-up, in July of 1996. I went searching at the dealers one day, and the Flairsides had just hit the market. This particular truck, had just been unloaded off of the hauler, and was the third one the dealer had gotten delivery of. I drove that truck for 5 years, and three months. I put about 54,000 miles on it, and aside from two minor recalls, the truck never even hiccupped. This doesn't count self induced issues, that I was the cause of. When I traded it in, it still looked and ran, brand new. I actually miss that truck.
Don It's a tie between my 1975 Imperial LeBaron Crown Coupe and my 1993 Cadillac Sixty Special. A close 2nd would be my current 2003 Town Car Signature Limited Edition.
The worst? Ummmm. My 1966 Pontiac GTO Convertible. I had visitation rights to it at the Pontiac dealership's service department. I had it one year, during which time it spent 161 days at the dealer. (Pre-Lemon Law, folks). davesdeville 08-25-05, 06:56 AM The best would be the 75 Deville, no question really. It's been reliable, it's hella comfortable, and it's fun. I love that car. tru504187211 08-25-05, 10:30 AM I haven't owned many but....
1990 Cadillac Brougham 100,000
1993 Cadillac Sixty Special 150,000
1987 Buick Somerset 89,000
1991 Pontiac Lemans
Definately Sixty...no problems besides people hitting her while parked...oh yea, and the dealer mechanic mistakes...other than that-- perfect driver. Brougham has been good so far, but the shocks did go on it... "The worst? Ummmm. My 1966 Pontiac GTO Convertible. I had visitation rights to it at the Pontiac dealership's service department. I had it one year, during which time it spent 161 days at the dealer. (Pre-Lemon Law, folks)."
Isn't that odd? I had a '67 GTO convertible (essentially the same car) and it was one of the best cars I ever owned! I often think of it and of how I wouldn't mind getting another one like it now. I saw one at a classic car show a couple of years ago, same color, etc. as the one I had except that it was an auto (mine was a 4 speed), looked immaculate! Owner wouldn't consider selling it, though. Jim85IROC 08-25-05, 04:46 PM My best car was my 86 Camaro 2.8 liter V6 I bought during college. I needed a winter vehicle to replace my Jeep Cherokee, and a guy offered me the 86 Camaro for a hundred bucks. I was already familiar with these cars. I owned an 86 Firebird for many years, and at the time had owned my IROC for a couple years. I bought the car at 128k miles with a busted reverse gear in the 5 speed. I trailered it home and let it sit while I went back to school to a pick & pull junk yard and pulled out another 5 speed for $50. I installed the 5 speed, a new windshield and some minor odds and ends, then proceeded to drive the car for another 50k miles back and forth to school for a couple years, then back and forth to work during the winters for another couple years. I finally gave the car away because the body had rotted so bad that it was unsafe to drive. It still ran like a champ with nearly 180k miles. I never once did any repair work to the car except for a starter and usual maintance things (brakes, plugs, wires, etc). Oh yeah, and it had a habit of breaking torque arm and transmission mounts, usually when I dumped the clutch for burnouts. :D
By far the most reliable car I've ever had. It was a fun car too. DopeStar 156 08-25-05, 10:19 PM I haven't owned many but my 89 Brougham and 99 Malibu are by far the best cars. Reliable as hell. My 89 Mark VII however even though I loved it was dependable that it would break every month. I'd have to say it's the worst car I've had. | |
