View Full Version : What Driving force nudged your decision to get a Caddy, Especially the Deville? Was it to attract all the Babes?
Was it at the urging of your neighbours so that the Jerks would congregate in one location and stay away from them and their wheels?
Was it the comfort?
The status?
The style?
In my case, I wanted to get a car that I knew would protect me in a collision. With 2 herniated discs removed from my neck, if I get into a crash (especially a rear ender), I could easily become a quadraplegic. I felt that the Sedan Deville gave me the best protection outside of a Hummer or other large, ponderous vehicle. And the Deville has the style, the comfort and the presence I also needed.
Plus the price was right. turbojimmy 08-23-05, 08:46 AM My decision making process was pretty complex, but on the surface it seemed simple: I didn't have a car and my uncle happened to have a bunch of Devilles on hand.
The Grand National is my pound-out-my-aggressions car. I drive it and race it on the weekends and that satisfies my need for speed. Thus, I don't necessarily need a performance car to get to work and back. My first foray into 4-door sedan was my Buick Century. I hated to admit it, but the 4 doors were handy and it was nice to be able take people out at lunch time or put the kids in the back. But I wanted more.
I was thinking a Crown Vic or a Grand Marquis would be cool. I'm 'only' 30-something years old but the big sedans really had appeal to me. I really wanted something comfortable to drive to work. But, I had gotten used to the decent winter performance of a FWD car.
One day I grew tired of the incredibly boring Century. It was great for what it was, but I wanted something a little more upscale with a few more amenities. My uncle, who is in the salvage biz, had just the thing. A Yukon Denali. Big and black with nice tan leather. I committed to buying it and sold the Century. Then I got a call from my uncle that said the Denali was damaged more than anticipated and would cost $x,xxx more to repair. I said forget it, what else you got?
He had a lot of 100 new, never been titled flood cars. All Buicks, Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles. Centurys, LeSabres, Rendezvous, Sunfire, Alero, Grand Prix, Grand Am, Silouhette - just about anything from the BOP line up. None, except the Rendezvous, really seemed much different than my Century. The Rendezvous was just ugly. I said "what else you got". He had a handful of used stuff in that mix of flood cars. He had an ML350, some minivans, an Explorer and some other stuff. But he also had 5 or 6 Caddies from '99 up. 4 were Devilles - 2 2001 DTS, one 2002 Deville and one 1999 Deville. Also in the mix was a 2001 STS but it was accounted for (the deal ultimately fell through - wish I'd have snagged that one).
I got to thinking how much I enjoyed driving my parents' '95 Concours and their '02 Deville. Also, the memories of renting Devilles in a prior job came rushing back. I loved driving those things around on business trips. Knowing nothing about the Cadillac lineup, I did some research on the Devilles. It wasn't long before I realized that among the cars I had to choose from, I wanted a DTS. Both available were White Diamond. One had a tan carriage top and painted rims, the other had no carriage top, chrome rims and Vogue tires. I selected the latter. They brought it in to change the fluids (again, these are flood cars) and as they poured the fresh oil in it ran right back out a hole in the block. So I said "I guess I'll take the other DTS".
The rest is history. After a few months of restoration work I was driving it around. I still would prefer the sleek look of no carriage top, but I had little choice in the matter. I've since replaced the painted stock rims with chrome ones and put a Corsa exhaust system on it. I really love driving the car and it has given me no trouble whatsoever (outside of things caused by the flood, but nothing I'd blame GM for). All in all I came in at about half of retail blue book for the car and it seems to be solid, reliable transportation. Comfy too.
Jim OffThaHorseCEO 08-23-05, 08:56 AM its actually kinda weird, i never really payed much attention to caddys newer than 1994, then one day i just noticed the DeVille. having not paid attention to them before, i assumed it was an 04 and 05 bodystyle, it was like love at first sight, i was googling 04 cadillac 05 deville etc etc. i printed a sheet out and told everyone in a wishful/jokin manner, "yea by next year imma be so rich imma have one of these" or
"when off tha horse productions blows up, this is what ill be driving" i even told a few people "this is my next car" everyone looked at me with a yea right expression, some said "with hard work and perseverance....." others said "the police will be all over you in one of those", i didnt blame em, i didnt believe me either...
i used to drive a buick roadmaster. it was a landyacht, and i loved it, when i got run into i didnt even feel it, i heard it. i always loved the huge cabin, the loooong stretched hood, everything about it, when it came time for a replacement, i was lookin for 94 or 95 b bodies (caprice, roadmaster, impala).
well i came across a 2000 Deville and was like hold on, they made these all the way back to 2000? well i checked it out, tvs ps2 tinted windows, but over 100k, finance company could only help me so much. the salesman showed me "a newer one with less miles and in better condition" got in, it was everything i expected and more, test drove it, oooooo like riding a cloud, i almost fell asleep hehe jk. anyways so it was everything my roadmaster was, except for maybe a smaller engine, so i got it. i still wish i had my roadmaster, but im in love with my cadillac :)
**on second thought maybe i shouldnt post buick pics** johnnydone 08-23-05, 01:18 PM i was looking for a luxury car with low miles and cheap i came across this 97 deville for 5800 with 77xxx miles and every option and a concours it was a no brainer mikes93sedandeville 08-23-05, 05:58 PM Well I've always liked Cadillacs but never really saw one I could afford. So one day I went to the local junkyard to buy some parts for my beloved Ford Probe GT my wife saw this beautiful sedan devill in the for sale lot of the junkyard. I checked it over only had 84k miles was clean(the junkyard doesnt clean em) and i mean clean so my first thought is there has to be mechanical issues. So i ask for the keys and i was taken aback it fired up immeadiately purring like a kitten. So we took it for a test drive and I fell in love. Talked the junkyard down from 2,000 to 1,500 although ida paid 2k lol but why not try n save a few bucks right. I have not regretted buying this car it is a dream to own and it turns heads. The third day driving it we were stopped by a Cadillac club owner and asked to join because he said that was the cleanest deville hed seen in some time and would be honored to have us and it in the club. Ok im babbling now lol end post.:alchi: My neighbor passed, the car was hers. It had 74,000 miles on it and it was relatively clean. Her daughter offered it to me for $1,900. I couldn't pass it up and now I'm hooked! Best car for the money: Beautiful car, awesome safety features, 275hp V8, drives like a dream, and oh, it's a Cadillac!:) BTW, my Caddy is $15.00 a month cheaper in insurance with the same coverage than my ex POS 2000 Chrysler Sebring LXi. Man, what a piece of sh!t. :ill: One word: Smooth.
A few more words: I was car-less and had vowed to NOT buy another older vehicle - next car was going to be no more than 4 years old (at the time, a '99 or newer). Then I spotted an '85 Deville for sale down the street, for cheap. Not knowing the cars, I had thought it was a lot newer, especially for its condition which was near mint. Mileage was 100,000 (180,000km), price was (!) $1,500 CAD... got it inspected, talked him down to $1,000 because it needed brakes, tires, etc...
And I decided to buy it because at the time I lived in Alberta, and up until late last year they quadrupled the standard insurance rates for any male under 25. Even those like me with a clean driving record and more than half a million kilometers of driving under their belt (I drive a lot...). Any newer vehicle would have been financed, and thus requires *full* insurance coverage. On a $13,000 car (I was going to buy a 2000 Intrigue), my payments would have been $180/mo, and my insurance $400/mo.
Oh yes, and I've always rated *comfort* in driving above *what* I'm driving. I can't stand small sports cars, or pickups... but I got the best of both worlds with this car. Would you believe an impulse buy? The minivan was using 2 qts oil with every tank of gas, so I had to get something. I was at a Chrysler dealer, looking at new hemi 300 sedans. For which they wanted $37k. And there was this cream puff black 99 DeVille, with the Northstar badge on the trunk. Just sitting there. So I took it for a test drive. It was beautiful.
I was a little worried that the Caddy wouldn't fit into my tight tight garage behind the apt. The salesman was savvy enough to let me keep the car for a couple of hours to check it out.
Well, it fit. It was $9k with 51K miles and clean as a whistle. Even the engine oil was clear as glass. FWD for good snow driving and a enough room to take kids to camp and to college. I couldn't buy a new econobox for that kinda money. Six months and 10K miles on it, and no trouble. The Northstar is fantastic. Eats up campers, semi's, BMWs. Put your foot in it and zip, you are well above the speed limit, like right now. Solid road feel. Just did a 700 mile trip in 10 hour 45 min. youbetcha77 08-24-05, 08:38 AM In 1993, when I got my license, my grandparents gave me their 90 Seville. I dont know about anybody else, but when your a teenager you tend to be a little harder on cars than normal. When they gave it to me it had 30,000 miles. The only thing I ever done to it was change the oil every 3000, change the antifreeze every year or two, changed the transmission fluid twice and replaced a waterpump and a couple tune-ups. Thats it. It now has 228,000 miles. It still has the original coolant hoses and held up to the hell I unleashed on it when I was in High School.
That led me to search, recently, for a 93 Sixty Special. I searched high and low, but the only ones I found was by the coast or too far away. I finally found one in a yard in the next town. It was very very dirty inside, but the leather was mint as well as everything else inside, just dirty. It only had 65,000 miles, so I bought it and cleaned it up and I had my sixty special. It since then has nickel and dimed me to death, but finally figured out that the injectors were bad.

BlazeI went through two perfectly good used cars in High School.. :nono: addison_ii 08-24-05, 02:38 PM Well I bought my 93 ETC in 2003 for my wife as a Valentine's Day gift and the NorthStar(complete with a carnation and a giant sized card). Sold it and bought my 93 Deville because of looks, engine, size, and Cadillacs' disease. It got rear ended so I bought my 94 SLS 4 months later because of Cadillacs' Disease and the price.(1,300) and it was clean as the board of health but had some problems. Which all be fixed soon!! Jim megatron 08-24-05, 05:57 PM Well for me it was all of the above already stated obvious reasons for owning one of these cars, the comfort, ride and biuld quality to name a few things. But the main driving force for me was that my farther he always (with the exception of one lincoln towncar) ALWAYS drove a cadillac of some kind. He owned sedan devilles, sevilles, coupe devilles and a fleetwood. I pretty much grew up riding in cadillacs and I've loved these cars for as long as I can remember. And funny as this might sound to some of you I feel close to my dad everytime I get behind the wheel of my '94 sedan deville.
That being said the funny thing is I found my sedan deville on a local car lot on my dad's birthday of all days,AND it was green and his first caddilac a 1972 coupe deville was also green. They were closed so I went back the next day test drove it and had my mechanic look it over and the rest is history . Also as an interesting side note my dad not knowing I had just bought a cadillac (he still lives up north) bought a blue 1993 sedan deville like farther like son :yup: Stoneage_Caddy 08-24-05, 07:42 PM story time....
My 94 started out as a joke ....we were combing the tampa bay area looking for a 96 G20 to replace the one that was destroyed in alaska (i had 2k in turbo parts for one so i was stuck)...
Stopped by a toyota dealer and i didnt see a g20 ...My parents were driveing me around since i didnt have a car , so naturally they were looking at cars too....Mom disapears ..couldnt find her to save my life ....so me and dad are standing there makeing jokes about this stupid looking kia thing the salesman was trying to pawn off on me as a "good car"...I looked over to my left which is the area the rear of the building is , and there is mom looking at the huge falking boat....I had to see why .....so sees me and says "its just so pretty michael, but i know you wont like it, i just wanted to look at it".....By that time dad walks up and we start really laughing at this car , one of those deals "olds mans starter coffin"...so me and him are under the hood and all over it pokeing fun at it....the more we made fun of it the more we wanted to know stuff.....Like "Whats it doing back here?" , salesman tells us its a mechanics special , but the car was in wonderful shape as far as the body and interior went ....so we asked about the price ...4900 ....being a mechanic myself i saw the beatuy in a car that needed no body work , i knew i could do the rest ....
So after some trying we get it to start so we could drive it ....dad goes to get in , and cant , the passenger door had to be manaully unlocked ...we get 10 feet of the dealer lot and it dies ....got it refired and going down the road ...engine is pinging hard , there is a huge knock everytime i accelerate (engine hitting the firewall) , every little bump is accompanyied with a ratlle from the front end ....the dash is scrolling "service engine soon" ,"service suspension soon","low coolant","change oil soon" and i got a check engine light ...radio antennas busted , and at this time the car dies again , we had ot let it cool off and the starter came back to life ....but hey, the AC WORKS !!!
but as i looked out over the hood , i got this feeling ....i dont know what it was ...
we parked the beast at the dealer and left it for dead giggleing at the mess all the way to the next dealer ....and the next ....most of the day went by and we ALL were still talking about this car ....and how much of a shame it was that it got into that shape
I thought , shoot , 4900 is half the budget i set aside for a car fromt he insureance settlement on the g20, i could buy it for 4900 , put 1500 in it and if i didnt like it i could turn it for 6k+ EASY...i thought "shit ive restored far worse cars that were BRITTISH this cant be THAT bad"....me and my parents all felt so sorry for this poor old cadillac we went back and got it .....
took it home , fixed 12 of 15 engine codes and fixed the suspension and engine mounts , took it out for a spin , still pinged , but i got a taste of how the car was supposed to be ...2 months later i cured the ping ....
2 years later the cars biggest problem is the faded pinstripeing (missed my appointment today)....a long road from a car that was a total peice of shit ...
as far as it being no worse than restoring a brittish car .....i was wrong LOL...

My car venture first started out as looking at a 92 Mustang GT 5.0. It was sick...but was too much. More cars came after that...but I eventually settled on a Honda. My first car was a 93 Accord EX coupe. It had a 5 speed. I wanted a 5 speed. It was a super clean car and was in our price range. I did a few things to it. It was a great little car. But the problem was that our family is a muscle car family. My uncle has a 64 Cobra, my grandpa has an 03 (?) SSR, my mom has an 02 Mustang and my dad has an 04 Monte Carlo SS. My grandpa and uncle also built SO many cars in their day...especially old Corvette Sting Rays. So having that being said...I started looking for my own muscle car. I wanted a G body. Monte Carlo, Regal, Cutlass, Grand Prix...it made no matter. I must've looked at like 20 Monte SS's. I was amazed. In PA...you need at least 5 grand to buy a descent G body. So I scrapped that idea. So then I eventually thought about a Cadillac. I knew they were old people cars...but it's all good. I remembered back in my youth...my really rich step uncle (something like that...lol) always had a new Cadillac. So I just thought they were rich people cars at the time. lol. But I eventually rested on this idea becasue I liked the luxury feel, power options, an enormous car...but it also had a V8. Insurance also likes Cadillacs. So I figured on going the other route of 80's GM. I was originally going to buy an 86 Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance. It was great. 307, black leather interior, pillow seats, everything. But unfortunately I couldn't sell my car quick enough to buy it. So I eventually saw my 89 DeVille for 2 g's and bought it. I basically bought it becasue I didn't want my deal wit hthe Honda to fall out again. So originally I planned on doing the normal stuff to it. Tint, rims, paint, etc. That turned when I had a 900 dollar bill from a lose belt when we got it. It jacked up the whole engine. Luckily it didn't blow. The air ride is also 50/50. It works when it feels like it. Oh well. The interior is clean and the vinyl top is perfect. So... For now my dad is using it for work and I have the Monte. I'm thinking of saving up my money during the winter and after winter, taking it back and fixing it up. By that time the engine will be almost gone. Thank God. It has the normal high rev thing. It's crap. But I want to get a hood and grill from a 93 or so wit hthe bigger grill, pillow top seats, rear wheel skirts, rims, tint, paint, etc. Make it really classy. We'll see. But...that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Night Wolf 08-25-05, 01:11 AM Well, lets flash back to 2002 or so...
I bought a 1991 Grand Am to fix up, me and my father, then I bought a 1990 Grand Am parts car... it was gonna be a blast of a project... but, didn't work out.
My father used to have a 1979 Coupd DeVille, my mother had a 1984 Sedan DeVille for 4 months before it saved her life, because if she was in anything smaller then that, air bags or not, she wouldn't be here today. With that money she bought a 1989 Brougham, which she still has today.
So here I am , spring of '03, 15, I turn 16 July 1st, get my permit, so the Grand Am is a no go, and I always dreamed about owning a Cadillac.
I was origanally going to get an '87-'89 Brougham (preferred '89) in fact I was bidding on a few on ebay, my mothers fiance' has an '87 Brougham, and he was saying that the Olds 307 was very reliable, it'll be a great car, big, safe, cheap and easy to maintain, and since he knew the cars well, he could help me work on it.
I loved the cars tho... but the one thing I didn't like... was the 307... there was just no power to be had at all, it was a dog, and what 16 year old wants to drive a car that can hardly get out of its own way? Plus, I was around the car for years, I knew everythign there was to know about it, it was all old to me.... so who wanted to drive, let alone own a car that they are so used to, and your parents drive? I wanted something new to me.
So I was thinking... what else did Cadillac offer around 1990?
I never considered the 1990-1992 Brougham, or the 1993-1996 Fleetwood.... if I did, I may have got one of those.
At the time I thought the 1992+ Eldorado/Seville were ugy and never wanted one (how wrong could I be) and I never liked the front of the 1989/1990 DeVille..... and I saw a 1994 DeVille and thought it was plain ugly too (wrong again)
so that is when I saw a 1991 DeVille... wow, I liked that....alot... I liked the front of the car and the inteiror.
Then I found out that it ranged from 1991-1993, and read up how 1992 was alot better and 1993 was even more better.... but more importantly, you could get then in 2 door... i wanted that.
so my search quickly went to a 1992/1993 Coupe DeVille, but still maybe 1991 if a nice one came up.
few on ebay, a really nice triple blue car, it was really nice, but ended at $5,500... and my budget was between $4k-$5k for my first car.
There was a 1991 Coupe DeVille in the local paper, triple black, nice car but had its share of dents, scratches and problems.... and I could have got it for around $2,000.... the thing that we didn't like aobut it was the 167k miles it had on it, so we passed on it.
So my mothers fiancee (Rich) said he was going down to FL soon and to see if there are cars down there, he could pick up and drive back... so IIRC it was the Palm Beach Post I seached...
low and behold there was a 1993 Coupe DeVille, mint shape for $4,450obo.
we called, the guy said he just listed it the day before, told us about the car, it had 2 new tires on the front blah blah, we said we had a realitive in the area if they coudl test drive it, they did, it checked out, we bought the car.
I never physically saw the car, heard it run, drove it or anything, it wasn't until a week after we got the car, that the used car dealer in Orlando sent me some pictures in an e-mail (which I still have) and I saw my car for the first time.... how great shape it was in... this was the end of March of '03, I didn't get the car until June 6th of that year.
When I saw the 1991-1993 DeVille, I loved the shape, the Coupe is what did it for me, and at the time, I loved the interior, the way the dash bent around for the driver, and how the fuel data center and electronic climate control were right behind the steering wheel, I liked it alot.
Had it been now, and i had $5,000 to spend... well, not now, but back in 2003, I would have wanted to look at the '94-'96 Fleetwood, and the '93-'95 (moreso the '95) Seville STS/Eldorado ETC, but I think they were out of my price range. I would have also looked at '96-'98 Grand Am GT and '92-'96 Ford F150 and ~'96 Silverado...... but I chose Cadillac on impulse, but it all worked out in the end. cruella89deville 08-25-05, 01:48 AM ...and I thought MINE was long.
;) gdwriter 08-25-05, 01:10 PM I have my own long story about how I ended up with Cruella, my '91 Sedan de Ville (See pictures at the Post a pic of your ride (http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=423580#post423580) thread).
Thanks to a divorce and difficult financial circumstances, I had to sell my much loved '99 Honda Accord coupe. At least it went to a good home; my sister bought it, and my niece has an awfully nice first car.
I did not want to drive Betty, my '64 Impala, every day, so I was looking for some cheap wheels to drive back and forth to work. I was looking to keep it to $1,500 so I could pay cash.
I was started out looking for a late 80s Honda, but when I went to a few beater lots, it was pretty discouraging. I wasn't expecting a $1,500 car to be showroom new, but an '87 Accord for $1,495 had rust bubbles around the trunk, the bottom part of the dash ripped open and a hood that appeared to have been painted with Liquid Paper (or at least the brush).
At another lot, I test drove an '89 Acura Legend that was $1,399. The A/C needed charging, the front shocks were shot (it bobbed and weaved like a mid-70s Lincoln Town Car), and the power seat didn't work, so it wasn't the easiest car to shift, and I didn't really want a 5-speed anyway. But on the same lot was a '90 DeVille for $1,999. The red paint on the roof was faded, but the rest of it looked good, and the interior was in great shape. The lot was closing, so I didn't get a chance to drive the Caddy, but it did make me think I might have better luck at getting a decent beater if I found an old land yacht that was likely gently driven by a member of the early-bird buffet set.
I used AutoTrader.com to do a search of Buicks and Cadillacs under $2,000 within a 100-mile radius from my home an hour SW of Portland, OR. I came across a few promising candidates, and was shocked to see a '91 DeVille for $999. I called the dealer to confirm the price, get the mileage (200,000) and find out what was wrong with it. Surely a car that cheap had to have major problems. He told me about the dented rear bumper and said the car needed some TLC—or at least a good tuneup.
I went to check it out that evening, planning to test the '90 DeVille I had seen previously along with a couple of others I found online. I was expecting this $999 special to be pretty rough, but other than the dented bumper, it looked even better than the '90 DeVille. The bottom cushion of the driver's seat was split, and some of the vinyl on the driver's door armrest was broken, but rest of the interior looked great. The power seats, locks and windows all worked, and it even had a sunroof, something I really missed from my Accord.
Took it for a test drive, and the idle was a little rough, especially with the A/C running, but it accelerated and cruised easily. The front brake rotors were a little warped, so there was some chatter when I first stepped on the brakes, but it still stopped. And the A/C blew ice cold. For $999, it was a steal. Even if a bunch of problems cropped up or I decided I didn't like it, I figured I could sell it for at least what I paid for it.
I got about two miles down the road after buying the car when it started missing, coughing, and eventually stalling. Oh sh*t. I managed to limp to a gas station. By now, the dealer was closed, and even so, I didn't expect to get my money back since there was no warranty. Fortunately, I have AAA, so I had it towed home on a flatbed.
The next morning, I drove it to my mechanic in Salem with no trouble and had them give Cruella a tuneup. A few hours and $425 later, I had new plugs, wires, cap, rotor and fuel filter, plus an oil change. There was still a little hesitation when first stepping on the gas, so I ran a couple bottles of fuel injector and fuel system cleaner through the next few tanks of gas. That seems to have helped, and I've put 1,500 miles on her over the past month. I think my fuel pump will need to be replaced before too long because the coughing, etc. comes back when the tank is nearly empty, but otherwise, she's running well.
Normally, this is not the kind of car I would drive, but I've become pretty accustomed to traveling Cadillac-style. The seats are very comfortable, and I'm impressed that even after 15 years and 200,000, the interior is squeak- and rattle-free. I drive a two-lane highway 20 miles back and forth to work, and she's a nice cruiser with plenty of get-up-and-go when I need to pass. And she even handles pretty well on the twisty up-and-down roller-coaster road I like to drive into Salem. I'd prefer a set of real analog guages to the digital speedometer, but I can live with it.
I'm hoping Cruella will get me through the next couple of years; then I may look at buying another, slightly newer DeVille or STS. Swangin-&-Bangin 08-25-05, 07:29 PM I needed a bigger car & I liked all the electronic gadgets in the Deville. A Cadillac on Vogues & a custom grill has always been a classic here in the South. But the number one reason I bought my Deville was because I absolutely fell in love with the LED rear end of the newer model Devilles. You can spot the rear of the deville a mile away.. mjboone79 08-25-05, 11:13 PM after 3 years of loyal service my 93 ford escort which i paid $200 for died about 4 months prior to my goal of saving for a new car. my roomate (a SERIOUS motorhead) and i went to about 8 dealerships. nothing impressed me. i hate smaller cars. when i was 18 i had a 92 crown vic that i loved (cops took it). i only liked my little escort cause she was such a survivor and i had to respect that. so, the last dealership i was at, same one i bought my crown vic from, the salesman said "well, if your lookin for a bigger car we do have a cadillac over there for $3500". i turned around, right in front of the one he was talking about was a early 80s beat to shit rust bucket of a caddy. i almost said no. in fact i did. his response was "no,no not that one, look behind it". there it was, my beautiful 94 dark montana blue deville. i got in it and said "wow i can fit 5 chicks in here" my roomys response was "your thinkin with the wrong head, but for once i think its right". with the exception of a big rust spot below the gas cap it was in great shape. i bought it and have no regrets. plus we have full body work and painting abilities at my house so that rust is no more. for once thinking with my &$#% worked. man i love this car. daddydg 08-26-05, 12:03 AM I've had a company car for years (usually a small Dodge or Pontiac). I'm not comlpaining about a *free* car, but I've always wanted something big and comfy.
Well, I recently took a promotion, but the company car was no longer part of the deal (some promotion, eh?). So, I started looking at Fleetwoods. I had my heart set on an LT-1 loaded Fleetwood Brougham. On a whim, I figured I'd measure the old garage and guess what... the beast was too long! So, back to the drawing board,
I went out and ended up driving a 1998 Deville and just loved the Northstar's power and smoothness, along with the room in the Deville.
Now, if I can just figure out the cause of it's rearend sag (see my recent thread about loss of rear end height along with a picture of my ride).
Dan I~LUV~Caddys8792 08-26-05, 01:24 PM Jump to October 2001, when i was a freshman in high school and 14 years old.
I was a typical 14 year old male, wanting a Sports car for my first car. Something like a 87-92 Firebird Formula or a 1979-85 RX-7 would have made me very happy. But my dad said no because the insurance is too high and i would race em :sneaky: So i started to think "what else has a V8 and is quite quick, but cheap to insure?" Then i thought "CADILLAC!!" "that would be such a sleeper, a big grandpa car (no offence) with a big powerful V8 under the loooong hood." So i was reading thru the November 2001 Issue of Motor Trend during one of my math classes, and i get to the very last page where they look back at an earlier issue (November 1971) So there it was, the 2nd installment of the "King of the Hill" series, where they matched the '71 Eldorado and '71 Mark III Lincoln. and i thought they were gorgeous cars, but then i read about the motors, and wow i was in love "460 cid in the lincoln with 365 hp and 500 lb/ft, and 500 cid in the caddy with 365 hp also and 535 lb/ft!!!! I was amazed:rolleyes: , i didnt know engines got that big. So i decided i wanted a caddy from the '70s, much to the dissappointment and confusion of my family and relatives. "why would chad want such a big old gas guzzlin grandpa car?" I told them cuz they're cool in a very sick retro sort of way and i was sick of all the ricers in their civics and accords tryin to look cool. So my dad and mom agreed that no '70s era cadillac was ever going to park its self in our driveway, so i thought, how about a 79-85 Eldo? bad idea i soon found out due to it's tendency to rust quickly and completely, and its problematic HT4100. So then i thought, how about a 1987 Brougham? I saw one for sale near me with 61,000 miles on it for $1000, it was a beautifiul almost rust free dark blue with the dark blue velour interior, i fell in love again. Now this is in june of 2003, i was 16 had a job, but no licence, so i asked my dad again, and he said u dont need a car yet, and you dont have a licence, so just wait and you can buy a car later. So i got another job in September 2003, and i kept earning money for this car, so in March, we started looking seriously, my dad said "No Cadillacs" due to the high repair costs. So we looked at Park Aves, Oldsmobile Ninety Eights, and Pontiac Bonnevilles because my father loves the 3800 (and for good reason) But i wanted a V8 and RWD, so i thought, how about a Buick Roadmaster like my grandpa had, so i called him to ask what he thought of em. He said they're a good car, just kinda expensive to fill up, So i bought a 1995 Roadmaster Limited on April 17, 2004 for $3450, 138k miles, red with red leather but i LOVED how it had the LT1 350, this car was damn fast for how large it was and it was what i really wanted "a big grandpa car with a fast motor...a total sleeper" so i had this car and really enjoyed the LT1, i enjoyed it enough to cause some damage to the differential plus it was getting a horrendus 12-13 mpg, so i sold it December 9, 2004 and bought one of my Favorite Cadillacs, the 1992 Sedan Deville, it had 99,098 miles on it, and beige with beige velour interior, it was a steal at $3750. My dad had let me get a cadillac which is odd because I was really really close to buying a 1993 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Regency Elite due to the fact i didnt want another gas hog, and the 3800 is supreme, plus it has all the gadgets i want. So my dad put a down payment on the deville at a dealer near Fargo ND, so they met us on the 15th down by Minneapolis, with the car and i bought it, and i skipped school to get it, so i felt soo cool driving in late to school in my new Cadillac:cool2: .
Why i love my deville-
- power
- comfort
- style
-stigma
-looks
-its fast
- pretty reliable
- big car ride
- not a ricer Young DeVille 08-27-05, 12:09 AM Its not a Honda....
But on a serious note... I always loved Devilles and even more the coupes. I wanted an Eldorado but I could catch any breaks on one. One day I was on cars.com and I came across this Dark Blue on Blue Deville and I knew she was the one. No questions asked 30,437 miles in perfect condition I had to jump on it for $10,000.
The girls and haters are just something comes along with car, you have to accept it.
She looks even better with the 20's on and for the fall and winter she gets a new set on the famous mayo and mustard Vogue Tires. crimson tide 09-11-05, 01:16 PM I had bought the neighbors 87 brougham and the bug got me. The car ran well and felt better. I rented an 04 and couldn't drive anything else but a caddy. Age started to catch up to the 87 and my father was glad to take it off my hands and I went out and replaced it with a 01 Deville and have never looked back and can't be happier!!! molotovman5000 09-11-05, 09:13 PM i found a 97 Deville with 71K milles, white leather interior, diamond white, A/C, 12 CD changer. for $2000 just needed hood, fender headlights, and bumper mccombie_5 09-11-05, 09:16 PM What Driving force nudged your decision to get a Caddy, Especially the Deville?
My wife :helpless: Gio1978 09-12-05, 09:27 AM Well mine is kind of long and I dont have my Caddy yet. Still looking for the right one. Im looking at 2000+ Devilles. I love that body style. I drove one and fell in love. It was between that and a covertible Mustang. I drove the Deville and it was all over for the Mustang.
Anyway.... I come from what you might call a Cadillac family. My dad always had a Caddy, all my uncles on his side, 6 of them had a Caddy. My unlce on my moms side had a Caddy, my mom had a 1972 Cadillac Seville I believe. I was about 7 so I dont remember the model. My brother has a 1994 Deville, I love that car too. Drives like a dream. Nothing can touch a Cadillac. They can keep their, Lexus, Bmw, Benz etc.. Im sure they are nice cars, but what do they have on a beautiful Deville? Besides super high repair bills. LOL!
So thats my story. I hope in the next couple of months to get my Deville. I think black looks great, but its hard to keep it that way no matter how hard your try. So maybe Ill get another color.
Right now I drive and old Acura Legend. Nice car, gets me where Im going, but after 247K+ miles, its seen better days. My AC has been out since last year. Here in Florida thats just torture. It leaks, power steering fluid and burns oil too. I need new rotors up front etc.. So Im just hoping she holds out for me till I can get my Caddy.
Thats my story. :) | |
