Not everyone in the world can spend there day driving 5 generations of the Deville. Not everyone can see the long road the First FWD Deville has traveled to get to today’s DTS. In a little over 20 years she has lost her pushrods , Gained 682 Pounds and added well over twice the horsepower. If that wasn’t enough in a fit of late teenage rebellion she has also decided call herself DTS ,but to everyone that watched that little FWD grow up we know her as Deville.

So today while my 94 sits awaiting her new pinstripes I decided to try out the 06 DTS , even bring her home to meet my mother. A few calls later and there was my lady for the night , drenched in a lovely pearlescent white with butter soft “neutral” interior. Build quality is very good , if not great , all seems are gapped properly and everything is screwed on like its supposed to be. Cadillac did there best to bring over the lessons learned from the STS and its “carved from a single billet” fit and finish. You can only do so much with a unibody developed in the late 90s. Overall the new look is pretty nice. I’ve really warmed up to its new look now that I had all day to study it, but I still don’t like the chrome strip that runs across the trunk. Another styling bit that misses the mark is the steering wheel. What a ugly little bugger , the past few years airbags were starting to look like normal steering wheels. I thought we had left the age of the “box bag”, but there staring at me like a Great Dane at a cat show is that damned box. I will admit , the steering wheel mounted controls are top notch. The dash however is a great piece of work , VERY nicely done. Everything including the center console is impressive, even the lovely analog clock in the center dash has to be seen at night to truly know its beauty.

Time to go home for the day. I have been outside all day in the Florida heat ,even saveing a cts from the fate of a K car with a inattentive driver. So when I’m ready for A/C I’m READY for it. The DTS didn’t fail me , very good flow out of the vents without sounding like I’m in the wind tunnel. My work sits right next to the interstate , and more precisely an onramp to a 75 mph zone. Laying into the go pedal John Force style ran me right on up to speed and damned near into a mess. The northstar pulls very well once above 2k. Rated at 291 hp in the performance version it really still makes the 300 we all know (welcome to the new SAE rating standards). On the open highway I noted a bit of a darty condition at 65-80 mph , I had another driver run the car and he also came up with the same feeling. Something isn’t spot on with the “on center” feeling downstream from that “Boxbag”(stupid looking thing). Off ramps are kinda fun with the Yank Tank , where previous Devilles want to lay on the door handles this new one doesn’t want to lay on the handles but it still ends up there once you push it hard enough. If that’s not enough fun overcook it on entry for some nose first fun into you favorite object. Handling isn’t bad and brake dive is finally under control , each generation has gotten beater about not dragging the nose on the ground to stop the car. This one almost wants to pull the tail down first like a BMW. The car stops VERY well for something this big. So far the car is averaging 19.2 MPG , not bad considering the city driving on a car this big that isn’t quite broken in.

It’s the seats that are just TO DIE FOR. Oh my are the seats great , what a step forward, what a feeling , what great leather. For many years the Cadillacs have had this “other than leather” , the mystery material itself had no clue if it was vinyl or real leather , and most times the tires were more supple. Not this car , not these seats , man are they great. They are so great , they got there own paragraph!

So I took the car home to see mom , we piled the family in and drove up to the local steak joint. Dusk turns to night , night turns into a terrible storm. A great chance to see what it does in bad weather. High winds don’t effect this car like the 85-99 cars , and it does beater than the outgoing 00-05 cars. The triple sealed doors kept the wind noise to a minimum and the new layered windshield did a nice job on minimizing road noise. With no rain present I parked the car next to the road on the grass since no parking was available. After dinner (and another rainstorm) this error of parking judgment would prove to be a good test of the traction control. Yes I got out of “Woodstock II” , but I wondered for a few seconds.

At night the new high intensity headlamps are a great new feature. Which makes up a little for the driver side mirror losing the ability to shield the driver for headlamp glare behind. You wont realize how much you miss this until you drive this car. All LED Tail lamps are out back again , along with new high intensity LED reverse lights. Speaking of LEDs the interior is lit up with them , this lovely bluish hue of light basks the cabin upon night entry. Its quite impressive. Also Impressive is the cluster , looking almost as if it was lifted straight from the 06 STS. Very nice , done as well as a citizen watch but not a Rolex yet.

At the end of the evening like a few of my past girlfriends mom asked me about my 94 , and told me “she was nicer, I like her beater”. While we all love my old 94 , this new 06 is a very nice piece of machinery . Going unnoticed in traffic and at the steak place tells me people still think of it as a junior coffin and not a evolution of GMs best Front drive platform. I even took the liberty of interviewing folks about this car , word on the street so far isn’t as good as I hoped, most comments were “old mans car” , the folks that liked it were …….old ……Hopefully , this was an isloated incident.

That's a nice color for that car! I'm really warming up to the new changes, and I know you like the 2005-05 styling Stoney. I like what they've done with the new interior, but it's a shame it looks like the new Impala interior.

I'm still not certain if I like the rear end.

Looks like they simplified the rear seat climate controls a bit.

the new interior is so much beatter than the 00-05 that it makes me like this car more ....really if the chrome was removed across the tail it would help the look....its really a nice looking car after you look at it all day

Yeah i dont like the chrome stripe, it takes away from an otherwise attractive back end. I do like, no love the new interior, and that analog clock. The front has really grown on me, and i actually kinda like the new front end.

Checked out one today at the dealership, in the same color. There seems to be more chrome on the new one and I like it in person that way. Everything has been so monotone in the last decade and I'm glad they are going with more chrome.....

Judging by your pics Stoney, the one I saw here had thicker chrome along the sides of the doors, or so it seemed, in fact the salesman pointed the chrome out.

Love the interior now, and I like the changes to the front end, rear end.......in person everything is different...

I agree , there must be about 30 of them at the dealer now .....damned things are everywhere , it really makes the 00-05 look old , all in all i like it ...

Was this a base, Luxury II or Luxury III model?

(.......old man's car? Maybe it's the non- color of this particular car. An all Black one with chromed wheels would not have gotten that response)

Great review Stoney, and i showed it to my wife....next year a replacement for her car is due. Thanks for paying attention to the rear seat space too, there seems to be more than the DHS, maybe its just the pictures though

We like it, we like the new interior, it has much more class than the 00-05. The front end styling is nice too, im unsure about the tail, i wonder whats under that chrome strip. I wonder if it could be taken off by a valeting company. Like it alot. Its back in the running for the title of MC family car of the year LOL. Obviously my wife will be looking out the competition. She is paying this time...

Once again great review, brilliant pictures......

Why hasn't GM listed the DTS model in the respective inventory selections under the GMBUYPOWER? When one "surfs" the various Cadillac dealers website the DTS selection is NOT there yet. Even though many Cadillac dealers have this car on inventory. WAKE UP CADILLAC.

Big differential price-wise between the luxury 1 pkg and the performance selection.

Thanks Stoneage ! I can hardly wait to see pics of one shod with the 18" wheels. But I've got to say those 17" in the pics look VERY good. It's amazing how the profile of this car has been so radically changed. It has a modern, forward-leaning poise compared to the more sedate character of the previous model.

I agree. The DTS looks somewhat like the Seville with the front "raked" downward. The car looks more refined as opposed to the "tank-like" look of the DeVille.

I drove a DTS rental with <1000 miles for 3 days in Dallas and can't say I liked it. Maybe it was the Dallas expressways, but it bounced like a boat in water. Also, the analog clock is positioned so that you feel like it should raise yourself to read it (minor stuff, but anoying). Love the XM radio.

I'm glad the Deville is finally getting rejuvinated, it is an improvement over all the devilles before it. I like it alot. I went with my grandparents to Owensby Cadillic in Aiken S.C. Friday, and the owner took us for a ride in the performance DTS that he had just got in the day before, and damn! that was nice. I mean good lord. It feels much more comfortable than the 05 cadillac, I like that optional leather, it really feels nice. I wish they had nightvision, but other than that its nice.

I do like what they did with the front and back end styling. Now it looks like a Cadillac again. Those 2000-2005's just didn't.

Great write up Stoney. Im extremely impressed that the Luxury I package has HID headlights. That is a real step in the right direction, giving lower priced packages the features typically found in the most exclusive option sets. This coupled with the lower MSRPs across the board for the year should help the cars sell much much better.

Hello...
I recently drove a base model rental DTS for a week and loved every mile.
I would like to drive the luxury 4/+performance package-
and one with the bench seat.
...don't laugh, I still like a column shift.

Don't know what color
Maybe blue...and there's always RED!

I don't like the fact that the interior design is shared with that new Buick (forgot the name of it). However, I have to admit the new DTS version is more attractive and luxurious. This car makes the 2000-2005 Deville look cheap, really fast. I can imagine that now that the new DTS is out, the old Devilles are going to be very inexpensive. They're going to be every where lol. I like the new DTS, especially in the White Diamond. I like the fact that the base model is monochrome painted and have fog lamps (unlike the base Deville). I like the fact that GM kept the old 1998-2004 Seville shift knob. I love that big knob over the SRX and new STS small shift knob. Thank God GM got rid of those OnStar rear glass-mounted Antennas. I like the front end and the back end of the new DTS. I like that chrome strip too. I want to see it gold-plated, with some 18" Vogues on the car. The one thingy that I hate about this car is that ugly steering wheel. It's funny how the 98-04 Seville didn't really share any interior similarities with any other car but the Deville and the last model Oldsmobile Aurora,,,oh and maybe the Bonneville, both great cars and luxurious. However, that ugly steering wheel that's on the new DTS is also in the new family sedan Impala, cheap coupe Monte Carlo, luxurious Buick (I forgot the model name), etc. I think GM dropped the ball on the new steering wheel and I miss the seat mounted safety belts and power headrests. Still, the new DTS is a very nice updated version of the 00-05 Deville amd mot a redesign, kind of like the 98-04 Seville was to the 92-97 Seville. However, I hate to see the 'all new Deville' in the future. It's probably gonna be butchered, exteriorwise, like they did to the new STS.

Nope, no way. Just got a 2006 DTS loaner while my 2005 is in the shop (heated steering wheel literally ready to start on fire). The first thing that was most irritating to me is the "blue" lights inside the car. I felt like I was in a fish tank when first getting in. Could be that I'm of Western European descent and have blue eyes, but those (you can call them whatever you want) flourescent lights are absolutely irritating.

Guess they aren't marketing to my "type" anymore.

This car is basically a Toyota Camry. It drives like one, feels like one, sounds like one and the interior most definitely LOOKS like one.

Listen to those power locks when you push the button. I had a 2000 lease Ford Taurus. No difference.

The deck lid sounds like throwing a Campbell's soup lid in the sink after closing it.

I'm 40 years old and couldn't quite figure out how a 50+ year old could possibly figure out how to safely and efficiently operate the climate control, cruise control or radio functions. What on earth is that symbol on the left steering wheel? I asked the Enterprise rental clerk (that obviously rents out dozens of these a day) and then a friend what they could possibly think that symbol represented. Neither knew. I realized, without reading a book, that it was the cruise control button.

Why is everybody so excited about this $5.99 analog clock? It seems rather ridiculous to have to clocks (one analog and one digital) stacked right on top of each other.

Why is there no longer a button to release the fuel fill cover? I was advised that you simply press on the exterior cover to release it and it pops open. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of having a secure fuel fill cover? Can't wait to hear the people complain in the colder climates that this damn thing is frozen stiff in the Winter. Why not just put a little lip on it to grasp with your finger?

Two positive points. FINALLY, they put the digital speedometer in a place where you can actually read your speed while the tilt steering wheel is in the lowest position. You can't read the analog guage in this position, but at least you can see the digital guage, although quite small. Also, the seats FINALLY have a side bolster support that HOLD you in the seat while turning corners (thought we jumped this hurdle back in 1990).

Sorry, my last American car. This car is NOT a Cadillac. I'm at a loss and being born and raised in the Detroit area, realize that this car is the reason for it's demise.

Thanks, Stoney and DTStryAgain I think your reviews and points of view are great for those of us waiting for a new DTS. (I'll be the owner of a Mary Kay DTS between June and Agust).
One thing I want to be sure of is if they really come with the HID lights and what's included in the Luxury II package?
Thanks.

The DTS has a smoother design than the 2000-2005 Devilles. As previously stated by others, I do not like the chrome strip on the trunk either. The chrome strip and the taillights look like the chrome strip and taillights taken off of an old Monte Carlo! Of course in this picture, you cannot see the chrome that well but it is there. My uncle had standard version of this car with the chrome accents and knight emblem. I used to wash it for him about 20 years ago.

I went to dealership and sat in the 2006 full size sedan I really like it.

The last of the FWD cadillacs seem to be the best effort.

Seat technology seems to be improving... a few years ago I drove a 2003 w/o tiring , I was eager to drive 5 hrs w/o a rest break instead of 3 hrs.
I think it was the seats.

You mentioned layer glass in windshield, how does this differ from the sandwich glasss we have had for so many years?

I enjoyed your review could feel the enthusiam

The analog clock didn't look bad when I sat in the DTS at the AutoShow. The close up picture makes it look cheap but it doesn't look bad in the car. Personally, I prefer for the clock to be made out of wood instead chrome. The chrome looks better on cars that have chrome or silver accents. A wooden clock would look better with the Zebrano wood accents.
