View Full Version : Blew Somthing Under The Hood Or Exhaust? HEY GUYS, HOWV U BEEN?... THE OTHER NIGHT I WAS RACING SUM KIDS DOWN A STREET, AND AFTER A FEW BLOCKS AT WOT I FINALLY PULLED UP ON THEM AND BLAZED THEM. SO THE NEXT DAY WHEN I START UP THE CAR AN DRIVE IT, I HEAR A SOUND (FROM DRIVER SIDE OPEN WINDOW) LIKE AIR ESCAPING FROM SUM WHERE, AS IM HITTIN THE ACCELARATOR IT SOUNDS LIKE "TSS....TSS...TSS...TSS...TSS" I LOOKED AROUND ABIT AND SEEN NOTHING SUSPICIOUS BUT DONT REALLY KNOW WHAT TO LOOK 4.
ANY BODY HAVE ANY IDEAS? MAN THIS CAR NEEDS SUM MUCH NEEDED MAINTANCEhttp://cadillacforums.com/forums/images/smilies/banghead3.gif Did you blow an exhaust gasket out? Or a spark plug loosen up and/or come out? ocjmakaveli 08-22-05, 06:09 PM need pics at the least
it could be an exhaust leak somewhere but i'd recommend just taking it to a shop to have it checked out and get back to us Big_Blue 08-22-05, 08:15 PM Are you sure it coming from under the car and not under your dash? I say that because I tend to peel my tires or speed alot where I live when I drive my caddy and it seems that air controlled valve under the dash above the E brake always makes that noise on me.
There is a vacum line that connects down there but never cared to check it cause it goes away soon as I push it up which is no problem since one of my cut off switches is there. I was gonna change the part later because its summer time and I just got past 80 percent completion of my car. An I couldnt wait to drive it around so I would do the work this winter again like I did last few winters that passed. cmgrafmc 08-22-05, 08:32 PM Are you sure it coming from under the car and not under your dash? How do you manage to "peel" your tires? What have you done to your engine/tranny that allows this miracle? Welcome to the world of the LT1 powered Cadillac! I can smoke the hides off of mine!! Stone stock! 90Brougham350 08-22-05, 10:12 PM LT-1 helps but I can lay a pretty nice patch with my TBI 350. All about torque, my friend!
Brian i have some more clues....
it makes this chopping noise (like a motorcycle or truck) only when driving, going forward or reverse. When parked or in nuetral it does not make this sound.
and its the worst right when i start the car, an goes away after some driving, but i can still barley notice it.
its not from the inside, because i can hear it echoing off of walls or cars to my left when window is down
i wish i could take a pic of sumthing, but i dont see anything wrong
i think ill take it to a shop tomarrow or friday, if i have enough $$$...but till then im just trying to figure out wut it could be... ill check my spark boots @ lunch time vanaisa 08-24-05, 12:52 PM blown exhaust gasket, i bet. ocjmakaveli 08-24-05, 01:03 PM yep i bet either the gasket is blown or the bolt broke allowing air to escape through the manifold thats that loud noise your hearing.
check the manifolds and bolts on both sides or better yet just have someone step on the gas while yo look under the hood youll be able to pinpoint the noise easily So My Cars Sittin @ The Shop. A Bolt On The Manifold Broke And Theyre Gona Try To Get It Out, But They Said If They Wont Be Able, That The Cost Of Replaceing Would B $700. I Dont Know If I Can Give Up That Amount Of Money Right Now... Hope They Can Get It Out! Ima Give Em A Call Now An See Wuts Up.
ook... i just called an spoke with him, told me they got one bolt out, but there was another broken off... and they took it to a machinest and he couldnt get it out either, so now theyre lookin for a used manifold...http://cadillacforums.com/forums/images/smilies/shakehead.gif
any one ever went threw this?... how u prevent sumthing like this...http://cadillacforums.com/forums/images/smilies/Want-Some.gifnot like it really matter now 90Brougham350 08-29-05, 01:01 PM Sorry to hear about it dude, that just plain sucks. One way to make sure it doesn't happen is to use the highest grade bolts you can find.
Brian BluEyes 08-29-05, 04:05 PM yeah, my 472 has a few broken manifold bolts. The noise does go away as it warms up because the metal expands and seals a bit better.
I'll get around to fixing them someday, probably about when I put headers on it! ocjmakaveli 08-29-05, 04:42 PM check my thread http://cadillacforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48573and

is where i got my bolts or you could just buy grade 8 bolts from a hardware store your choice
It's all a matter of opinion some think that harder bolts will break instead of stretching like grade 5 bolts are supposed to do but judging by the last 25 posts ive read about people that have between 1-4 (grade 5) bolts broken on their manifolds I'm going to try something different and see if it works better.
if your really into reading and gaining some knowledge about the extensive list of people with these problems on the identical lt1's that are in Impala SS then go here below type "broken bolt" and put Exhaust in teh drop down menu and you'll read all you need to know about these dreaded bolts
http://impalassforum.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=search A friend of mine at work insists that Grade 8 will resist breakage far better than Grade 5. If it is breaking it is overtorqued. Maybe we should investigate Pontiac manifolds, I have never broke a bolt on a Pontiac V8. (ok, removing them, but never once torqued properly). That torque value should be examined and the type of bolts examined. ocjmakaveli 08-30-05, 07:21 PM So what happened did they remove it?
i would suggest if possible have them weld a nut to the broken bolt then just turn the nut that is the best method and the weld will not stick to the iron heads.
