I just noticed that the low beam on the drivers side is out. After taking a quick look inside engine compartment it appears I will have to remove flexible cover near top of headlamp. What I need to know is if this is an easy replacement for a DIY on a 2002 DHS or full of nasty surprises? I assume I can get the part number of the bulb from the owners manual?

Low beam will be a #9006, HB4 51 watt bulb.

No surprises once you get the top trim / dress panel off (I do hate those plastic fasteners).

Some of us long-term owners replace the plastic fasteners with conventional threaded hardware. It's a few hour job to do the top and the bottom panels, but worth the effort as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks, I guess I should ask. Which one is the low beam? Also does the dress panel have to be completely removed or can the bulb be replaced by just removing the one fastener at the corner near the headlamp? Any tricks to remove the dress panel fasteners?

Completely remove the top dress panel first. Someone else will have to suggest any removal tricks because I replaced the push-in fasteners with threaded hardware soon after I bought this DTS.

Low beam is the top bulb. Depending on the size of your hand, it might require removing the entire headlamp assembly (which is not a major effort).

Since I just finished replacing the drivers side low beam bulb let me make a couple of comments that may help others. 2002 DHS

First the dress panel clips are easy to remove but if one does not read the owners manual first you will not know this. They are made to go in and out easily and actually do. There is a small round pin in the center of each one. Just push the pin down with some tool like a Phillips screwdriver and the clips will pull out with your fingers. To insert just pull the pins up to reset, insert and gently push the pin down even with the surrounding surface. Really simple.

I found the directions to remove the low beam bulb incorrect in two places in the owners manual. They advise removing the two top bolts securing the headlamp and show a diagram. That is good. Next they just say to loosen the bottom bolt. That bolt has no diagram to show where it is and after looking up from the bottom of the car found it looking from the top on the inboard side of the light. Loosening it as directed does no good. It must be completely removed or the headlamp is not coming out. Some models may have had a u shaped hole in the lamp bracket allowing it to slip out but mine was a hole. Anyway it is pretty easy to access with an extension and nimble fingers can get it started on the return trip.
Secondly they say to turn the bulb counterclockwise to remove. That may be true for the high beam but for the low beam removal is clockwise.
All in all not too bad a job. My bulb was only $7.99 at local auto parts store. Remember not to touch the glass with fingers. Takes about 1/2 hour to do the complete job.

Yes I agree It is about a half hr job. nothing to be weery of. I just changed the low beams last week not because of a blow out but because those stock yellow bulbs are discusting. I decide to go with and after market HID hologen bulb with a blue-ish tint to it.you could find these in any auto store/speedshop with aftermarket products for about $40, I got mine on ebay for about $15. what a difference 10 times brighter and and soo much nicer color, similar to the bmw, benz and such but of course not good since its just a bulb not the real HID full system. which can also be purchased for about $500. I also replace the fog lights (DTS) with a similar HID hologen bluish bulb to match the headlights which also looks great. But getting back to it I would recommend when taking out the bottom screw on the headlight to use an extended socket with magnetic tip. the small space makes it very easy to loose this screw, after all screws are out, pop the headlight assembly out of this clip behind the corner part of the light which you may have to use some force, kinda scared me cuz i thought i was going to break something but did not. replace bulb , pop headlight back in put screws back and vuola done. not to bad.
