View Full Version : Two weird noises my CTS makes... Michael 514 08-20-05, 08:23 PM Hi guys,
Two minor things on my CTS... I wonder if anyone else has these, and if so, if I could fix them without heading over to the dealer:
1 - Sunroof opening and closing
It sometimes makes a weird sound. It's sounds like it's coming from the tracks. Not a grinding noise like gears, but a similar sound, like something needs some white grease or WD-40. It's could best be described as a high-pitched squealing noise. Any ideas?
2 - Noise from the springs or shocks.
When it's real quiet outside, and I drive slowly and then break, it sounds like a an old, squeaky rocking chair. If I am at a red light, and release and apply the breaks to make a rocking motion, it really sounds like a creaking rocking chair.
I have a can of white grease, a can of WD-40, and some regular oil, too.
Of course, the car is under warranty, but someone could just please tell me if they've seen this before, and if so, what i could use, I'll give it a spray tomorrow.
Thanks!

Wow! Completely different car (1993 Fleetwood Brougham), but still a Caddy, and I've been having the EXACT same problem. My car does have 102k miles and is 12 years old, but I'm still baffled over 2 months later since I first heard it.
Regardless, back to your CTS, and I hope someone has a tip or two....maybe even I could check it out! :o Hi guys,

For number 2, is it coming from the front wheels? If so, that means your brake pads are wearing down and when you apply the brakes, the detectors are squeaking against the rotor. You will be able to hear it even when the CTS isn't moving. Get the front pads replaced and the noise should be gone. collapsed 08-21-05, 04:03 AM 2 - Noise from the springs or shocks.

I had this EXACT problem with my '03 CTS. When moving very slowly and apply the brake, the forward/downward momentum on the front suspension creates a creaking noise. I could, as you said, make it create the rocking chair effect. There was a service bulletin concerning symptoms exactly like this issue. I will find my work order and tell you precisely what they fixed, as soon as I get home tomorrow. i started hearing that creaking noise from the front but i assumed it was my brake pads. what is the normal life span of the pads put on with the sport package? im up to 15,500 and i hear that high pitched noise a LITTLE when i brake SOMETIMES so idk if they need to be changed yet or not. Michael 514 08-21-05, 12:35 PM Hey Collapsed... I can't wait to see what your TSB/Work order digs up!
Intuition tells me it involves springs and not brake pads, but who knows...
Like I said, no panic or anything... I'd just like to hear what others have to say before I head to the dealer, or start spraying things! :)
Looking forward to your reply, Collapsed!
Mike RobertCTS 08-21-05, 12:48 PM I don't think I'd monkey with the sunroof with grease or oil. That's a warranty issue for the Dealer.
Two members had a front strut(shock) fail and behaved similar to yours. Agai a Dealer warranty issue. Mike, You bought your CTS used if I recall? Is it still under warranty or extended warranty? Michael 514 08-21-05, 01:29 PM Hey Robert,
Yeah, it's a 2004 -- still two and half more years left on the original warranty.
It was a demo, and then driven by the dealership owner for a year.
So, I'm not worried.
I'm just someone that always likes to fix things myself if possible.
Let's see what Collapsed has to say, and then, I'll bet it's off to the dealer.......! Michael 514 08-21-05, 09:33 PM Hi again!
Just a cute little addendum...
My partner just took out the car for the first time, and she phones me from her cell phone and says,
"I LOVE the car, but it's kinda making these noises when I slow down or turn... It's hard to explain... but it sounds like a taxi."
LOL rookie_ou812 08-21-05, 10:17 PM The noise you hear sqeaking, or creaking is caused by the front springs bushing mounts. Where the coil spring meets the shock tower metal, has a contact point that creates the noise. Two methods are used to reduce or cure the problem. The first step is to have the spring rotated so the end of the springs coil is 180 degrees . The second thing is to grease the contact point between the shock mounts and car body with white grease.
If the noise leaves and stays away ...problem solved. If not the springs will need to be removed and replaced. It would indicate the end of the coil is nut cut at the correct taper, or the car body sheetmetal is not stamped correctly. Michael 514 08-23-05, 01:22 AM Great stuff!!
Thanks for the advice!
I guess I'll mention this to the dealer..!
Mike Michael 514 09-11-05, 11:01 AM Hey Guys,
Figured I'd just bump this thread up before I head over to the dealer.
Collapsed -- Did you ever find out what they did when you brought it in?
Thanks!
Mike Utimonte 09-26-05, 05:14 PM I had the identicle "old buggy" front end suspension noise at 33K miles.
The problem took 2 service appointments to figure out. First apt, they greased everything - which lasted about 3 days.
