View Full Version : limo and taxi services.... sizanjdf 08-20-05, 07:05 AM I dont know if any of you have had any experience with this, but I was wondering what kind of license and other things I would need to run a limo or taxi service. I live in a college town with a population of only 30K without the students here, and 50K with them. "The Strip" as we like to call it is a 2 block stretch of down town with about 20 different Clubs and bars, not to mention the numerous other establishments around town. There are always people using taxis and the city even pays for a bus to transport people around. There are only a couple taxi services in town and plenty room for more. I know there is plenty of money to be made here and was needing some info on what I need to do to get started. If you have been involved with this type of business what was your experience with it...thanks a bunch mccombie_5 08-20-05, 07:30 AM I dont know if any of you have had any experience with this, but I was wondering what kind of license and other things I would need to run a limo or taxi service. Well its a good idea. I suggest you apply for such things at your local town hall, because every area has different laws and bylaws for the such.
You will need a new or relatively new car, preferably with a diesel engine, and it needs to be willing to have wear and tear.
Next time you are passing take note of the age of the local taxis
For a limo service you will need (in some places) to take a driving course, in others you will not, there will also be a limit on what number of passengers you can carry.
Best of luck. brougham 08-20-05, 03:02 PM Well its a good idea. I suggest you apply for such things at your local town hall, because every area has different laws and bylaws for the such.

I always thought it would be fun to drive a limo. If you can start a company like that in your area do it! Around here you probably can't do anything like that because there is lots of taxis and a lot of limo companies already. Although we don't see limos too often.
A diesel? The only cars you can get here that are diesel are Volkswagons. And I sure wouldn't want to pay to drive in one! Last week I went to a junk yard with a friend of mine and there were a couple of Crown Victorias and Grand Marquis there that had over 600,000kms on them! One of them looked like it was a 1998 or newer Grand Marquis and I think the odometer said 669,000 and something kms on it! It was at the junk yard because it was in a accident and both the airbags deployed. mccombie_5 08-20-05, 03:57 PM A diesel? The only cars you can get here that are diesel are Volkswagons. Ah i forgot, you have much cheaper fuel than we do :p
all taxis here in the UK are diesel, there is a wide range available, you can get almost any car with a diesel engine. I guess the diesel bug hasnt gotten to the US yet.....
It just doesnt make sense to run a taxi here unless it has a diesel engine.
Stoney and i both know the virtues of a diesel engine ;) sizanjdf 08-20-05, 04:20 PM Fuel is about 2.60 per gallon US where I am. the vehicle I would be using is a 1974 Fleetwood 75 mccombie_5 08-20-05, 05:04 PM Fuel is about 2.60 per gallon US where I am. the vehicle I would be using is a 1974 Fleetwood 75
That car practically IS a limo!
You would be better going into the limo business....... sizanjdf 08-20-05, 10:44 PM Mine doesnt have the partition between the seats, but other than that its a limo. I really would like to find out all the information about this and see if I can do it on the side, or even expand and do it for a living eventually The Fleetwood 75 is the factory produced limo. Talk to Sandy about them, he is a Cadillac vault of info!!! Send "Sandy" a PM to look at the thread. I don't know if he hangs out on this forums much. In the past couple of years, a company started using the new "London Taxi's" in Long Beach, California. Not sure why, maybe because of the Queen mary. But they look cool and stand out.
But I never thought twice about it's engine. Now I'm wondering what they use here? :hmm: mccombie_5 08-21-05, 12:38 PM In the past couple of years, a company started using the new "London Taxi's" in Long Beach, California. I dont know what engine they have, but im sure its a diesel, even there, because i dont think you can even get a London cab with a regular engine...... brougham 08-21-05, 03:37 PM Theres one of those cars here too. There's supposed to be a company that imports them and I think it said in the paper once that they cost around $60,000!
HotRodSaint I never even thought about that until you said it. They might not be diesel because they say that a lot of diesel cars don't pass North American emissions and that's why car companies aren't allowed to sell them here. mccombie_5 08-21-05, 03:54 PM Theres one of those cars here too. I would think that its a diesel, there are millions of them here, so if they didnt pass stringent tests they wouldnt allow so many on the roads.
Try and find out though HotRodSaint 08-21-05, 04:37 PM Try and find out though
Looks like they are diesel.

Stoney and i both know the virtues of a diesel engine ;)The diesel bug came and went from the mid seventies to the real early 80's. I think its gone forever in the U.S. at least for mainstream transportation. We have some VW diesels and such but not many. I believe hybrids are the way to go as far as fuel efficiency and I believe that since this technology is available and growing every day, diesels will not be needed no matter how pricey fuel gets. mccombie_5 08-21-05, 06:10 PM The diesel bug came and went from the mid seventies to the real early 80's. Oh my, diesel technology has moved on ALOT since then, they are as fast and sometimes faster, i think 40% in the UK are now diesels. THe French make fantastic diesel engines, as do VW and Mercedes Benz. I have just ordered a VW diesel... | |
