View Full Version : Drove a 61 SDV!!! DopeStar 156 08-16-05, 07:20 PM $3,000 for a 1961 Sedan de Ville. I drove the thing and it rode excellantly! It was a base model though, no AC, crank windows, manual locks, etc, but it started and ran great. Paint is ok, pretty good for a car that old, what do you think?! I like it, I'm not crazy about it, but I've always wanted an old old Caddy. cmgrafmc 08-16-05, 07:56 PM My advice, for what it's worth, is to hold off. If it's not THE car, don't spend the money just now. I made that mistake with my '83 Seville. Great car but not really what I wanted. Now I'm stuck with it.
On the other hand, if it makes you happy, go for it...but don't expect to get your money back out of it. Think of what you could do with $3000...like a 403 in your Bro...hehe Pete Benson 08-16-05, 08:38 PM Just for the record, if it has crank windows it's not a deVille - it's a Series 62 sedan, either the four or six window version. In any case, the '61s are among my favorite Cadillacs, especially the coupes. With fins on top and fins on the bottom, what's not to like?! addison_ii 08-16-05, 08:40 PM I agree with cmgrafmc. If it's not absolutely the car you want don't buy it. I made a lot of mistakes like that when looking for an older GM car. I wound up buying a car because I thought it was nice when I should have waited and bought the car I really wanted that surfaced shortly afterwards. But on the other hand if it is the car of your dreams then snatch it up. Night Wolf 08-16-05, 09:00 PM '61... man, those things were so ugly (IMO), gosh... the only classic Cadillac I truely do not like.
on another note, I agree, if it isn't what you REALLY want then do not get it.. I know first hand...
I *really* want a 1972 Eldorado convertible, not to hotrod, just to have... what I wanted to hot rod was a 1975/1976 Coupe DeVille, but then my '79 Sedan dropped infornt of me, and for $300 I would have been stupid NOT to get it...
but here I am, I can't (read: really don't want) to sell the '79... just because.... but I would give it up in an instant for a nice '72 Eldo rag top, and everytime I see a '75/'76, I tell myself how much more I would rather have that then my '79.... and it gets me thinking about selling the '79.... which I don't want to do for more then a few reaons... DopeStar 156 08-16-05, 11:46 PM Yeah, I'm not really interested in grabbing it. It doesn't wow me too much. To be honest the only Cadillac that would completely make me lose my bearings would be a '79 Coupe. My all time favorite Caddy let alone car in general. Still this 61 was in very good shape for its age. Night Wolf 08-17-05, 02:52 AM Yeah, I'm not really interested in grabbing it. It doesn't wow me too much. you seem to be really crazy about the '79 Coupe.... not many are... I personally don't like them THAT much... the sloping rear window...
Are ya interested in a 1979 *sedan*? ;) come on, it's yellow with a yellow padded vinyl top, and a *ceder red* *d'Elegance* interrior (one of a kind color combo) and it's got a Caddy 425 and a TH400 and 90k origanal miles and.....
you know you want it :) DopeStar 156 08-17-05, 03:29 AM I would be if you hadn't Broughamized the wood interior!!! LOL! I like the original wood grain pattern in the 79's. Still though the only appeal a 79 Coupe would have to me is that it's a Coupe. I have a full size sedan already so I'm not missing out on anything besides the 425. If I were going to spend money on a 79 I wouldn't settle for anything less than a coupe. Why are you getting rid of it anyway? I thought you loved that car? It's gorgeous I think. Night Wolf 08-18-05, 03:51 AM lol, if that wood trim came between finding a happy owner, and me getting cash, it'd be out in a minute :)
thats the thing, I am not trying to sell it... but at the same time I really don't *need* it.... it isn't the classic Cadillac that I always wanted (as I stated eairler) I think the 80's Broughams look better, the side profile and back end, but are gutless with any enigne....
honestly if I got $3,000 for it, which I proabbly could if I tired selling it, that could get the '93 repainted... which I probably wouldn't do, or that $3k would be a really nice down payment on..... say a 2002 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 5spd :)
the only reason why I am really holding onto it is because of the potential... it is *the* perfect car for a nice 500 swap.... for all the reasons I like the '76 better then the '79, those reasons are int he favor of the '79 for hot rodding.... a full 1000lbs lighter (that is an instant speed boost if using the same enigne) shorter, more narrow, makes it better for performance, yet is still considered big by normal people, and the whole chassis is practucally a 90's Caprice 9C1/Impala SS, which means that besides a beefy engine, I can do some nice steering and suspension work.... if I felt the need.
honestly tho, I would rather have a '75/'76 Coupe, there is one at the junkyard here, banged up.... and the sheer size and mass is what i love about it... I mean if I stand against the fender, and reach all the way onto the hood, I still havn't touched the chrome strip going down the center.... n the '79 I can easily touch the middle of the hood... that car is a car that you can make all the huge car jokes about, and be true....
And, I am moving to FL, so 3 cars really isn't practical... I could understand if I had a 50's car I was restoring, a pickup truck and the '93 or something... but all 3 of my cars are bascially the same thing, one gets better gas mileage, one is bigger, one is faster etc.... but all are *cars* with bench seats, column shift, auto, yadda yadda .....
Also on ebay I see really mint 1979 DeVilles all the time with around 60k origanal miles, I mean shiney paint, gleaming chrome, mint leather interior etc... they go for about $4,000.... so how much can I really get for my car? it isn't a beater by no means, but it isn't a show car, the worst part being the rust on the back driver side door I still havn't touched up, and it has 90k origanal miles, so it really dosn't classify as a low mileage car.. I have origanal paper work and window sticker tho, it is an extremly rare color combonation and I would trust it to drive across the country, but it also isn't origanal, I have put the 14" open element air filter (which is a snap to change) but once I start modding the car for performance, I will not get any of that money back....
Plus, I got it for $300, the story that goes along with that is very cool too, for the most part it was a one-owner, old lady in FL car, you know the story on these things....
So I will keep holding onto it, enjoying it.... maybe if I go to a car show I'll throw a for sale sign on it saying $3,500 firm or something, if someone wants to tell me its not worth that I say I am not really interested in selling it, but if someone had the cash and wanted this particular car, then I would say ok.
honestly, right now I don't even have the time, money or resources to build up an engine, what I would love would be an all stock, nice cruiser car, which is why I would want the '72 Eldorado convertible, love the outside, love the interior, really want a comvertible, it is a classic Cadillac I would be extremly proud to own, and I woudln't want to hotrod it, which means the fact it is FWD woudln't bother me.... but even in ok shape (its gotta be driveable and at least look good form 20 feet) they are going for way more then what I can get for my '79....
plus, in the next couple years, I want to retire the '93 from daily driver use, I do not want a luxury car and I want a manual... bascially a Keep Wrangler is the exact vehicle I want, I graduate from tech. school Jan. 31st of '07, and I told myself if everything works out, I start to work out and get in shape and all that, I will buy myself a pre-owned Wrangler that I want, so what I am going to do while going to tech school is tuck away say $20/week, nothing much... but a little less then 2 years that'll be $1,500 *on top* of what I would normally put as a down payment... I would be expecting to buy the Jeep for around $12,000.... 2 or 3 years old, 50k miles or less, not beaten off road etc.... I want one bad, and while for the same price, $12k I could get a '59 Caddy as a project, it just dosn't fit me at all right now, not when I will be moving around, getting a real job, saving for a house etc.... so that is why I want the newer car....
wow, man did I go on about this one here.... so basically, no, I am not trying to sell the '79, I don't really have an emotional attachment to it, moreso just that it represents everything a car *should* be (IMO)... big, chrome, big block V8, RWD, full frame, crash thru Civic's and keep going etc.... and I am not advertising it, but if someone came up to me right now with $3,500 in cash and wanted that car, it would be a done deal.... kinda make sense? dang, if youd of told you wanted a 79 coupe like a month ago i coulda got you one for 1,5k man! this elderly guy that lived up the street from where i work sold his about 3 weeks ago for 1,500.00. perfect shape except it needed a new vinyl top and a good wax/ detailing job. interior was perfect, no one had ever sat in the back seat. it had 102k miles on it. i wanted to get it but didnt have the money. he sold it though and i dont know to whom. DopeStar 156 08-18-05, 11:33 PM Dammit! Where do you live? its too late now, he done sold it. i live in kingsport. it was pretty nice man, wish i could have bought it. not too many around here, there was a gold 60 something CDV drop top for sale up the road also but i havent seen it in a while. addison_ii 08-19-05, 09:25 PM its too late now, he done sold it. i live in kingsport. it was pretty nice man, wish i could have bought it. not too many around here, there was a gold 60 something CDV drop top for sale up the road also but i havent seen it in a while.
Alright 93fleetwoodlowlow mister!! You're withholding all the desired vehicle locations:sneaky: . You're going to have to be more forthcoming with info man!!:histeric: no! i dont advertise, if someone asks then i will tell them, or tell them of a deal that they could have got and didnt just to piss them off. it was nice and all but i didnt really care for the color. it is green with a lighter shade of green interior. it looked good though, just a wax job and it would be nice looking. sorry dope, ill let you know next time i run across one. there was another one i seen in the beginning of summer that was very nice looking also, burgundy. i dont remember how much though. it was at a dealership. DopeStar 156 08-20-05, 12:34 AM DAMN! I like the seafoam green..... DopeStar 156 08-20-05, 03:50 AM I saw a 56 Sedan de Ville today at a gas station in pink and was mint but was missing the bumpers both front and back. It wasn't for sale, but it ws being worked on for someone. Now THAT'S the car I'd lose all my bearings over. I love the 56's. Night Wolf 08-20-05, 04:43 AM '59

my gosh, such an amazing car!
love the nose, the huge bullets in the bumper... love the side profile and roofline, it flows so nice, and I love the back end, it looks so.... complete... not as flashy as '57+ but it is just a classy sweet car, the fact that I like them in 2 door hard top the best, and they aren't as popular as '59 makes then cheap....
'55/'56, I have a hard time deciding.... '55 has the better grille (IMO) but '56 has the 365... and more power is always a good thing for me :) vanaisa 08-20-05, 06:36 PM it is, isnt it. After few beers near this beauty, i decided, that i must find similar car for myself too - damn, it IS beautyful, and drives like new car! DopeStar 156 08-21-05, 11:08 AM Haha LOVE those! Here's a pic of that pink 56 SDV. vanaisa 08-25-05, 04:48 PM OK guys - here are two of them for sale. Looks, like they need little work, but hey - they are 49 years old!

i´d like to buy one - two is too much for me.... lacmang 08-25-05, 06:11 PM I'm not real into the 50's and older cars but I still want a 56 Eldorado just because it had the best Cadillac emblem ever on the front of it (all 56's did) and awesome interior. I'm going to get that style Cadillac emblem tattooed on me some day. | |
