im trying to git the tranny offa my 69 472. i have the 6 bolts on the top taken off and i have the starter off. i cant really see anything else holding em on except for what looks like 2 bolts but if they are the heads are recessed in so you cant get any wrench or socket on it. any ideas?

The tin cover on the bottom needs to come off. IIRC there are (4) 3/8" bolts. Later ones were 10mm. You should also consider removing the torque converter to flywheel bolts at this time instead of leaving the convertor on the engine unless you are planning to trash that trans.
Sounds like you are looking at the transmission locating dowels which are just pins with no threads. They fit exactly into the holes in the trans and can get a little stuck due to dissimilar metals.
alright thanks. i was thinking they might be something like pins but wasnt sure. i take the torque converter to flywheel bolts off with the tranny still on?

Yup. Then the converter pushes back into the trans and stays there. It's a real %%#$& to put it back together with the converter still on the flywheel and invites breaking the pump.
ill have to spin the crank to get to all screws on the torque converter wont i? i havent spun the crank yet. i want to oil up the cylinders before i spin it. it wont hurt anything to spin it without oiling the cylinders will it?

If it's not stuck then 1 time around should not be a big deal.
terrible one

Yeah you have to spin the crank to get all of them. There should be three.
You can spin it without doing any oiling, etc. It shouldn't hurt anything.

Yeah and no more typing with greasy fingers.
is it a bad thing if i cant spin the crank at all by hand?

Pull out all the plugs and dose the cylinders with fresh brake fluid and leave it alone for a week.
alright, ill give that a try
i managed to reach up with a wrench and get the bolts offa the flywheel to torque converter, so the tranny is off. now i gotta git it on the stand.
terrible one

Yeah I was under the car spinning the flywheel until the bolt came into view, then getting it out, until all 3 were off.

Make a mental note to yourself about the distance that the torque converter is away from the bottom of the trans pump housing. There should be only a small gap like 1/2" with the converter pushed in fully. This note will come in handy whenever you put this stuff back together and want to be sure that the converter is engaged properly.
