Hello. I plan to reset the mileage on my '76 ElDorado back to 0, as it will have 0 miles on a newly rebuilt engine and trans. How would I go about doing this? What is everyones opinion on this? Should I leave the original miles on there for some reason?
Body still has X amount of miles on it though. Your better off just telling people its a rebuild.

The best reason I can think of for not resetting it is that it is a federal crime.

49 U.S.C. 32704 reads:
(a) Adjusting mileage.--A person may service, repair, or replace an odometer of a motor vehicle if the mileage registered by the odometer remains the same as before the service, repair, or replacement. If the mileage cannot remain the same--
(1) the person shall adjust the odometer to read zero; and
(2) the owner of the vehicle or agent of the owner shall attach a written notice to the left door frame of the vehicle specifying the mileage before the service, repair, or replacement and the date of the service, repair, or replacement.
(b) Removing or altering notice.--A person may not, with intent to defraud, remove or alter a notice attached to a motor vehicle as required by this section.
I haven't checked the regulations yet.
Nevertheless, You are still better off keeping the original mileage on the odometer and getting an engine hour meter to keep track of the hours the new engine has run. JCWhitney has one. I think Jegs has one, combined with a tach, pt. no. 918-333162, but there is no description or picture.

most states if over 10 year, they don't even check mileage...
I agree, if rebuilt enigne, keep the orignal odo and just write the mileage the new enigne was put in on one of those oil change sticker things or something and put it int he corner of the windsheild.

Thanks for the input, guys. I should have known that there would be a lot of laws/restrictions about this, but it just kind of came to me so I asked...lol
