My check engine light came on this evening. Dealer is closed Till monday, so I am wondering if i can drive it or wait till monday? At low rpms it seems like i have a huge engine rumbling. Any suggestions?

Only suggestion I can give you is... don't drive it. The last thing you want is to f*ck the entire enegine up because of one little problem. I probably wouldn't even take it to the dealer, unless they'll look at it without charging you a fortune.

At low speeds are you hearing engine noise or fan noise? Either way I wouldn't drive it too much in this heat. Take it somewhere and have the codes pulled to find out what's going on. IMO whoever you intend to fix the problem should be the person you have pull the codes.

At Low speeds im hearing engine noise, it almsot feels like when your brake pads are gettign close to the rotors. I just got new pads and rotors a few weeks ago with my 20's. MY buddy has the code reader at his shop so i can take it there free on monday. Should it be ok for short distances?

I dont want to alarm you, but i had a similar problem on a van a couple of years ago - It too sound like brake pads at the end of their life, so i stupidly ignored it for a couple of days. I was driving on the Motorway when there was a huge bang and clouds of black smoke from the hood. When i checked under the hood there was pieces of cast iron block all over the place like a bomb had gone off in my engine. It turned out that a con rod bolt had come loose (that was the noise) and then the con rod just came of the crank! and blew a hole in the block.
So the moral of this story is dont drive it! get someone to come out to it.

It may not but as drastic a problem as this was but better safe than sorry.

Good Luck

go to autozone, Napa, Knecks or Schucks any of those places plus hundreds of other auto parts stores have the free computer scanners, they just plug them in and will give you a print out of what is wrong and causing the engine light to pop on

They'll read the code but the diagnosis is not always 100%.

I had a similar problem with my 99 last fall. I drove to Galveston and when I parked on the seawall the engine was rumbling like a mo-fo. It sounded pretty damn bad. I went out to surf and figured I'd deal with it when I came in at dark. Had a couple ritas and drove it home... it would really shimmy when accelerating and sounded like it was missing.

Took it to the dealer and they replaced the distributor, rotor, and wires then found an intake manifold gasket was bad so I haggled GM to cover that as part of the deal... walked out less than $200 lighter so I was happy.

I wouldn't drive it... my catalytic converter went out shortly after this incident. I drove about 60 miles before taking it in and that could have created the manifold gasket AND catalytic converter problems.

It is likey an easy repair.

Maybe take it to the closest parts store that will read the code... the distributor, rotor, & wires looked like a pretty tricky job the way it's layed out in the engine compartment, so I had the dealer do it.

Good luck.

If the check engine light is not flashing it is not a critical item. If the light is flashing, serious trouble is indicated.

Yep... read your manual... that's what I did before driving home. Still, that doesn't mean you wont cause more damage. I would not drive far.:shhh:

Update:

Took it to get the code read. Luckily it was only a dirty spark plug, which was casuing the piston to misfire. I had it towed to the shop as a precaution, and thenit was close to my tuneup schedule i just had it done. Thanks for the advice.

yup, i drive with my check engine light on every day :lildevil:

service engine soon to be exact. Light on is a problem that has already happened, and should be fixed, and a light flashing means the problem is happening as the light is flashing :highfive:
