Sorry to post something new when it may have been covered elsewhere but I'm stuck on an old-fashioned dial-up connection today coz I'm not at home. Anyway, I just bought one of those fancy electro-chromatic mirrors at a junk yard and wanna swap out my old, non-functioning automatic mirror.

The basic questions:

How do I remove the old one from the windsheid without breaking it OR the windshield?

The wires from the old mirror are black, green and pink. The wires of the "new" mirror are black, green and tan, I think. How should it be connected? Tan to pink?

I ask only because I can't torture myself with this slow modem any longer. I'm hoping I can borrow someone else's experience/knowledge to save me hours of surfing the web. =P

Oh, and, sorry about the lame James Bond reference. I'm in a fun mood today. :thepan:

What year car do you have and what year car (model too) did you get the "new" one from?

Ah, thanks for replying but I've figured it all out. First, I have an 89. (My avatar is gone! Hm) The mirror was one of those motorized, self-adjusting kind that flip up and down automatically. It's never worked since I bought the car and after driving cross-country in a new 1962 CRC Corvette - www.crcoachworks.com (SHAMELESS PLUG) with an electrochomatic mirror, I just knew I wanted one. Well, I wanted the car AND a mirror.

Long story short, I went to our local "you find it - we pull it" yard and said I wanted to see any late model Chevys or Caddys. In the Chevy row was some unrecognizable SUV, stipped nude except for some bits and pieces, one of which was the mirror. Another SUV had one with the compass but I passed coz those compasses are green-blue and all the lights in the Brougham are yellow. Plus it'd have been more expensive.

Longer story short, $50. Some of you will yell and say, "Oh, you got hosed." I don't care, it was there, it was done, I didn't have to pay $200 on e-bay. (If any of you start doing that, you'd better send some profit my way.) All I had to do was remove the shoe from the "new" mirror because the kid who pulled it took a chunk of the windshield with it. =P Removing the old mirror was a snap, once I figured it out. I cut some wires and took an educated guess. (From green, black and pink to the new green, black and BROWN). I powered things up and the little light came on. After some kajiggering, I got the wires to fit in place and took a test drive. It works. =)

I no longer fear the night with is bright lights hitting my precious retinas.

another way to lessen that night glare which for me was still to bright even with teh mirror was getting some tints the best would be 20% they give the perfect amount of light ratio that you need for both day and night.

You should get the one with the compass in the future its very helpful when driving and it only has 3 wires too. On top of that the one i bought off ebay 2 years ago was 40.00 and the rearview mirror compasses are the most accurate in-vehicle compasses i've ever used. The only thing more accurate is a gps navigation system.

Yeah, the compass is good but I'm planning to get a GPS system at some point...and like I said, the blue-green compass doesn't match the yellow LEDs in the rest of the dash. LOL But I'm not picky or anyhting.

Ooooh, you know what else I want? New leather on my steering wheel with wood segments at top and bottom. Someone wanna do that up for me? =P
