I have a 1980 2 door fleetwood w/ the origional 368 in it. The valve covers literally exploded on it! Any thoughts? Anyway, I found a 91 fleet with 5.0 badges and i figure a 5.0. Will it swap into my 80' fleet? Also, I plan to swap the 91 front end onto my car as well, I think it all lines up. Any one heard of this?Where can Iread about it? Also where would I find moldings for the coup/fleet? I will also be taking the side moldings of the fleet for my 80' does all of this seem possible? Thanks alot guys. Also the 91 fleet is only $500 ,so I think it's a good deal.

What do you mean by exploded? Did the rockers go through them or something?

The 5.0 is a great engine when coupled with the overdrive trans and electronic engine control. Problem is that you will have to swap everything. Motor, trans, rearaxle, exhaust and associated wiring. Otherwise you will land up going over to a carbonator and mechanical distributor and the 305 will fall on it's face playing into the 2.41 final drive. You would also need a bellhousing adaptor plate to make your TH400 work with the Chebby powerplant.

Ouch. Did you mention the 5.0 for any particular reason, such as owning a spare? If it was just a suggestion, I think you might be better off finding another Cadillac big block to replace it. Keeping your old motor for oddities like the oil pan, just about any Cadillac motor from 1968 to your model year will fit. (look for the displacements listed in this section's title)

The valve cover has chunks missing off of it. I'm not sure of what has happened. Anyway, BAD nnews. I went to go pick up the car, cash in hand...

They sold it. So, I guess I'm on a parts search. Where is a good swap source? Someone who has "90'd" an old fleet.Do the fenders fit? How much must I swap?

Got the engine out and on a stand. Got oil pan off. One piston has shattered into @30 pieces. I still havent removed the heads. Can I bore a 368 to a 500? What all will need to be changed?

Geez man. Any pics yet? lol.

No, there is no way you can bore a 368 to a 500 lol. Just buy a good 500 and start from there.

I'm curious too. Those are plastic rocker covers, right?

If a piston has gone, you will likeltly find other damage to the block. No point in reusing it. Besides the heads are differant on the 368 and won't work well with a 472 or 500.

Look for a 472 or 500 to drop in. It will be cheaper and easier, and make a lot more power than any bored out 368 will.

A 425 will drop right in too.

You have a couple options for your swap; here are some suggestions:

1) Small Block Chevy; there's no need to find a 90-91 5.0 since it's an SBC - so any small block of choice (ie. 350) is a possibility. You will need to change the engine mounts, transmission, exhaust, accessories, etc. and you'd be starting from scratch for the motor. Not dificult, but you may run into things you hadn't planned on.

2) 425/472/500; attractive since it was a 368 car. The important goodies you need, you have already (that being the oil pickup, pan, mounts, and correct tranny). Not a bad idea and would be more of an "in-and-out" swap for you. You'd be set grabbing a complete 425/472/500 for a couple and using ALL your external bolt accessories on it (pulleys, brackets, alt, ps).

I've heard that the oil pan pick-up tube from the 368 will not fit a 425/472/500.

Incorrect: a 368 pan and pickup are ideal. A 425 pan and pickup work, but the pan may not always clear the stroke. The 368 pan clears a 472 fine, and I'll soon find out if it clears the 500 without problems. It either case, the pickup stud must be moved from the 2nd main cap the the 3rd (center).
