View Full Version : Goodbye to the Brougham

When I first bought the 90 back in December, I had very high hopes and I was pretty excited. I finally had a 350 powered RWD American cruiser. At the time, it was running on 7 spark plugs, and the brakes shook like hell. The brakes were fixed, I changed the plugs and wires. The car still had no power. Thus, a full tune-up ensued.

Spring came and went, and summer began, and I had the tranny fluid and filter changed, and a cooler installed. 3 weeks later the tranny went. Mind you by this time I'd been trying to get the iginition and timing somewhat stabilized and even, and had been since I did the full tune-up in April. Codes 42 and 43 were flying left and right, and nothing I did would solve the problem. NODIH was a great help, though.

I've finally isolated the problem to either the knock sensor, the EST module, or the ECM. Tonight, while replacing the knock sensor, the old unit broke off in the block. I'm a college student, I have $900 in the bank, and right now I'm suppose to spend spring semester next year in Italy. I need new brakes, the back wheels don't even stop spinning when the vehicle is on a lift and in gear and the brakes are applied. The paint looks like hell after I fixed the rust but sprayed wrong.

I'm not trying to bore you or depress you, just give you an idea as to why I may just have to let the Brougham go. It may, it may not, but right now it probably will. Thank you to everyone for all the good advice and good times.

Sorry to hear it Brian, but that's no reason to abandon all the people you know here now. :thepan:

Stick around regardless!

Hey 90Brougham you can't leave dude. I was looking forward to meeting you and checking out the BigBody at the meet in October. Well if you get rid of it, don't forget us here at the forums or about the meet. Hopefully everything will work out and you can keep the Brougham, or at least get another Caddy.

Meet in Oct? don't give up yet!

Breaking off the unit in the block isn't too bad, honestly, there is a hole in the other side identical to it, with a coolant drain plug in it. Just have to run the wire over. The knock sensor isn't critical, helpful, but not critical. But you do have to be more careful on timing if you run without it.

Brakes are cheap, around $20 for a set. Weigh it out carefully, deciding cost of another car vs fixing this one up. Been there done that, so I feel for you. I gave up on my 91 Bonneville. It needs a steering column, and a driver side window regulator. So I gave it to my neighbors who needed a car, with 250K+, still runs and drives good, still has those problems I gave up on (I broke the tilt mechanism, it is flopping all the time now!) are still there.

If you are anywhere near SE WI, stop by, would love to take a look at it in person! (yes, beyond the Cheddar Curtain...)

If it helps, I had an EST module laying around, I can send it if that helps any.

Don't leave at least, stick around! You will always be welcome!

If you get in the market, the 94-96 LT1's are a blast to drive daily. You can't beat a Full Size RWD Cad!!

The Brougham isn't going anywhere! I took the weekend off of driving her and drove my lady's 93 Tercel that's in dire need of a turn-up. I realized that the Brougham needs a little more TLC and she'll be absolutely perfect. I got such a good deal on it it would be a crime to dump it. I might have very little money and the Caddy is a bit of a sponge, but it's worth it in the long run. I'm gonna take a look Monday night at that other coolant drain plug and see what I can do. NODIH, how much would you want for that EST module, and is it for a Gen. 1 TBI smallblock? I KNOW I can't leave this place, lol, I've spend far too many hours here when I could be doing other things I probably should! Thanks everyone, my Brougham will be happy again in no time!

I'll dig around for it. I know I saved it, but now to find it again may be a chore! I need some serious time to clean out the basement and all my tools and car junk archives....

AFAIK, all EST modules for big cap HEI's are the same. The smaller ones were different. Do you have a large cap or small cap HEI? My module is for a large cap.

My favorite module is the EMR module. Olds got it primarily. If anyone is playing with a non EST (non computer) GM car with an HEI, and wants some low end power for cheap, let me know, I'll fill you in on a neat HEI mod. High compression engines will see great starting ability, low compression will see overall better low end performance.

I have the newer model HEI with a separate mounted coil and small cap. Thanks for the help!
