Hey all....
I'm in the process of helping a friend rebuild the bottom end of engine, 1981 368 4BBL out of a S&S Hearse and ran into a snag.
I forgot to mark the distributor where #1 goes and can't find a diagram of the dist. orientation anywhere. I've got a chilton's, but as usual it sucks a big one. In searching the forums for some info I came across a post that said that cad's timing gears have the cam mark pointing up instead of down?!?!?! I've planned on installing the oil pan and Valve covers today and paint the engine...If I have to pull it apart again I'd like to know as quickly as possible as I'm under a sevre time frame..
Any help would be more than greatly apprieciated!

It does not matter if you use 6 or 12 o'clock on the cam gear. Either way works. as long as you are absolutely sure that it was installed at 12 o'clock then you are OK. Pull out the spark plugs. Put your finger over (NOT IN) the #1 plug hole and have an assistant turn the crank pulley clockwise. The piston will come up and you will either feel a lot of compression or none. Turn the crank a few revolutions by hand to see what I'm talking about. When you get to where you know the #1 piston is nearing the top of it's travel on the compression stroke, put a drinking straw or wooden dowel straight down the spark plug hole to feel exactly where the piston is. Have the assistant turn the crank slowly as you check for maximum piston height. Look at the timing mark now. It should be exactly on top dead center. Now you drop the distributor in and the goal is to have the rotor pointing at #1. You need to compensate for the distributor gear which will turn as you drop it in. The distributor might not drop all the way in so turn the crank over some more and it should drop right down.

Recheck the position after the dist drops in.......

It was installed at the 6 o'clock position. I found another manual that confirms that it's the correct position. I also was skimming through a 1979 chilton's manual that shows the dist. orientation w/ the position of the #1 plug for the 425/472/500...from what I've read the 368 is pretty much the same engine.
The engine is on a stand as I've just put in new main and rod bearings...oil pan is still off.
