I was wondering what these big block caddy engines made for power in stock form? I believe these where iron block 7.7 liter engines if I'am mistaken? I remember the '72 coupe deville my dad had really moved when I stepped on it,but what where the horsepower and torque number for these babies?

Here is the official info:

The largest V8 engine to date appeared in 1968 when Cadillac unveiled their 472 in³ version. This huge engine delivered 375 hp (280 kW) but specialized in torque, with 525 ft.lbf (712 Nm) produced at just 3000 RPM. The power rating was conservative, however, as the engine could produce at least 420 hp (313 kW) in the real world.

Possibly 1970, I think that was the year of their highest compression from the factory, before they cut it way down in 1971.

"Officially" it was 220HP (net HP) for the '72 Deville, but in reality, it was about 345HP (gross HP that is)

Remember net HP is more like real world HP, and MUCH closer to what you'll see at the wheels than gross. Gross hp is without any accessories, often without an aircleaner, etc.
While 472's are very capable of making big power, no stock 472 EVER made 420hp. The stock cam is just far too small to make that power, it is made for a smooth idle and TONS of lowend torque. The airflow through the engine will simply choke out long before that much HP is possible.

When Flash Cadillac dyno'd a fresh 500ci stock 8.5:1 rebuild, they found 302hp @ 4200rpm, 493 lb*ft @ 2600rpm.
With a 10:1 500ci engine, they got 323hp/504lb*ft.
Of course, these are closest to the gross HP numbers. Take out power lost to the alternator, power steering, AC, and losses through the drivetrain to get rear wheel HP.
Honestly, I'll buy 220HP for a '72 Deville. Net HP for the 10:1 472's was probably around 240hp or so.
Yes, the cars do move though. If I nail the throttle in my '70 SDV, it'll just smoke the right rear tire and not go anywhere untill I let off the gas and it hooks. How does it do this with so little HP? Well, the engine isn't making very much noise when I smoke the tires like this... It is just pure torque. 500lb*ft of torque is ALOT. That's why these cars move so well.

Actually, for the 472, the highest compression was in 1968-1969 at 10.5:1. 1970 had 10.0:1, 1971-'73 had 8.5, 1974 had 8.25.
