View Full Version : Crazy idea? Or maybe something to think about?

While laying down trying to recover from a ridiculous headache, I started thinking of this wierd idea.. You know how some luxury automobiles have backup cameras? And now Infiniti is coming out with an all-around camera? Well, would it be ridiculous to have a windshield camera?

Here's what I'm thinking.. Instead of simply having the windshield to look through, how about a video screen much like the one you're looking at right now. In the event of a power outage of any sort - if the video goes out, you can see through it like an ordinary window. The advantage to the screen could be:

1. More information than the human eye can normally put together alone. For example, a computer can track how fast the car in front of you is moving by "observing" the speed it's moving along the pavement. At any decrease in speed, the video screen would display this by maybe throwing a light red border around the vehicle's perimeter. This would mean that at the very split second the driver in front of you takes his/her foot off the gas pedal, you know about it. At 60-70mph, this could mean you're able to hover your foot above the brake pedal a full second or more sooner than if you were to wait for the brakelight. This would save many lives in the event the driver in front of you is about to slam on the gas.

2. Or, much like Adobe Photoshop can brighten a dark image, a dark night can be brightened-up in much the same way. Instead of needing night vision, the video screen could simply make things brighter and clearer. This would be especially useful on those roads with no lights.. Some of us surely know what I mean...

Many other benefits such as having that red border placed around objects that fall off of a vehicle ahead of you. You may not be able to see an object through the window two cars ahead of you but the video screen can tell you that something just fell off the back of a truck three vehicles ahead.

Any thoughts, opinions or possibilities?

Sort of like Nightvision??

How about a luminescent LCD windshield that lightens everything (on the windshield) as it gets darker outside. :canttalk:

The speed at which technology advances, I'm sure that day will come. Look at nanotechnology! Pretty soon we'll be able to change the color of the cars paint at the touch of a button!

The new Mercedes S-Class has something like that. The Speedometer is actually a fake dial on an LCD screen. When nightvision is activated, you get a digita speed readout in the corner of the screen and a view of the road ahead beyond your hedlights

How about a HUD? (Heads Up Display)
Something that you can see through, it would be projected on the winshield with all the extra info you mentioned but is shown directly on the windshield. One problem I see with it is that it might be too distracring for some. Of course we would have the option of turning it off if that be the case.

Now, Stoney's would probably have targeting vectors as an option on his! lol!

honestly, for me, all this new stuff they are putting into cars is getting freaky. i mean its like one day it wouldnt be about how good of a driver you are but how good of a computer you can afford. So then what happens when something in the car fails, that wont be cheap to fix at all, and people wont even know how to just drive the damn thing.

It sounds like you guys are describing a combination of the HUD that Pontiac has used for years and the night vision system Cadillac came out with a few years ago.;)

Yes you're right. Mercedes and BMW just cottoned on to ideas GM had many years ago.....Of course being Mercedes and BMW they'd have to go and do it bigger and better :banghead:
