View Full Version : Gas Mileage.....not a big deal powerglide 07-18-05, 05:04 PM So all this talk about gas mileage/costs got me thinking about numerically quantifying it.
Assuming average cost $2.75 and that one drives 15,000 miles per year. I worked out some numbers....see attched graphs.
I took average city/highways numbers posted by manufacturer so its probably optimistic but you get the relative picture.....
The clnclusion for me is that I am not going to experience any signifiact savings by selling the Deville and buying a 6 cyclinder car like an Accord V6 or RL or CTS.
In fact I will only see some savings if I goto a 4 cyl car like the Matrix or Accord-4....but even then its no more than $50 a month.
So, for me, I rather pay $50 extra a month and ride in style. (shoot I probably spend more than that on Starbucks everymonth anyway)
If anyone wants a copy of the excel file to tinker with the numbers yourself, let me know.
Ouch for all you Escalade owners.....and hurray for those Prius owners.....most of us are in the middle where mileage is no big deal malcolm 07-18-05, 05:22 PM You are absolutely right. Today I filled up the STS and for the first time went over $40.00, 40.25 to be exact for V-Power. I thought for a moment maybe I will start using Plus instead but quickly calculated a savings of $1.60 per tank, about 10 cents a gallon. Hey we're Cadillac owners if a tank of gas is an issue we should not be driving them. Not to mention adjusted for inflation, today's gas prices are not really expensive, relatively speaking. do what? i only pay about 120 bucks a month for my CTS! Boombotz 07-18-05, 07:24 PM That graph is pretty damn close to what I pay monthly. I wouldn't change a thing because of it. Well except the gas prices if I could. Playdrv4me 07-18-05, 07:41 PM yea i average about 50.00 a week right now. My God is it going to be nice to get back to a REGULAR V8 fuel economy as funny as it is to say that.
What I mean is, a 4.4L V8 7 Series is probably going to be right in line with your figures for the LS400 and the Deville (4.0 and 4.6L respectively) BUT I dont get much if ANY better fuel economy (if not WORSE) then the Escalade guys do. So taking that into account (about 13mpg city) Im looking at about a 70-80.00 a month savings on fuel. Thats insane! And thats V8 to V8! powerglide 07-18-05, 07:47 PM ....no wonder you're having a hard time selling that 'valanche....and your zero ebay feedback rating isn't helping neither bimmerman! :-) mccombie_5 07-18-05, 07:49 PM I wouldn't like to put a figure on what i pay per month. But i suppose running a half dozen cars doesn't help. This is where the Phaeton Diesel comes into things.... evilrussian 07-18-05, 08:49 PM Some months I only pay like $35.00, hey, my job is only 8 miles away :p mccombie_5 07-18-05, 08:52 PM That would be great! I live about 12 miles from my work. But it's a commute. traffic. Busses. Hell.
The need for a semi economical and comfortable car increases MC, congrats on the Phaeton, I saw your other thread. ;)
My only concern with everybody jumping and panicing into a smaller car MIGHT mean the gas prices might go even higher caused by this action.......why????? won't the oil companies want to "make up" the difference and charge more? they could if they wanted to imo.
That is also my concern if everybody starts driving these hybrids, etc. The rest of us could literally be "stuck" with a V8 vehicle and no possible way to get rid of it because no one will want to buy it!
just a theory. mccombie_5 07-18-05, 09:09 PM Good point Ralph....
I think that they have already capitalised on diesel cars, when the diesel engines became populer recently because of their refinement and often better preformance than their standard equivelant the price of diesel wen up above the price of regular, which it has never been before.
As I'm on.....This Phaeton's fantastc. Pretty fast too. For a Diesel. It goes back on Thrusday and I get the Jag on Friday. VW were very good with it, and it has the best stereo i have ever heard in any car Good point Ralph....

I can't believe those little turbo Jettas are advertizing 1,500 kms per tankful!!!! That's absolutely AMAZING!!! The thing is, I noticed the price of diesel climbing up there too and I think it's only a couple cents per litre less than regular fuel. (here anyway) But still!!! mccombie_5 07-18-05, 09:18 PM I can't believe those little turbo Jettas are advertizing 1,500 kms per tankful!!!! That's absolutely AMAZING!!! Yes that engine is VERY economical..... 1.9TDI it's a few years old now but it does nicely. The one in this thing is a 3.0TDI it's a bit thirstier i should imagine, not that i would know it arrived with a full tank!
I think my local (ha) garage is charging 81.9p for regular and 86.4p for diesel.....

That would be very close to what our diesel is. It definately makes sense for you to have a diesel run around car!
I'll check the price next time I fill up. (of diesel that is) mccombie_5 07-18-05, 09:36 PM That would be very close to what our diesel is. It definately makes sense for you to have a diesel run around car!

Good idea, it would be interesting to see the difference.... Interesting research. The big difference comes when comparing trucks & SUVs that have an average MPG in the mid-teens and most cars that have average MPGs in the mid to upper 20s. My Sierra Denali gets 14.5 MPG overall and my CTS gets 24.5. I might replace both for an '06 SRX V8 AWD and another sports car. I'll probably spend more on fuel, since my daily driver will get an MPG in the upper teens. I'm probably equal to the Escalade. But I only drive about 10,000 miles a year so the gross dollar amount difference is lower.
My guess is that the Expedition costs me $35 a month more than the Prelude did. Another thing to consider is that the Expedition uses regular gas, and the Prelude DEMANDED premium.
One thing you don't hear people saying much about is the consumer price index comparison between 1980 gas prices and 2005 gas prices. We're still in good shape. The reason why this hurts so much today is that we've been paying extremely LOW gas prices since about 1985. Actually youd be surprised. When it comes to cars the Ebay world is totally different.
Firstly, cars dont work like the regular auctions do, its a 40.00 Flat submission fee, and 40.00 upon the first bid. There is no Final Value Fee.
Secondly, placing your car on ebay can go to two ways. You can make it a bidding frenzy by placing a low or no starting bid, OR you can just use it as one of worlds BEST advertising avenues and put your desired price right on there from the start, like an Autotrader plus. In my case this is what Im doing and Ill have a report about how it worked out in approximately two weeks ;) RobertCTS 07-19-05, 08:31 AM Yes that engine is VERY economical..... 1.9TDI it's a few years old now but it does nicely. haha.... I'm pretty sure a US litre is the same as a European Litre....but US gallons are different to EU gallons.... so i went for the litre option..... RobertCTS 07-19-05, 09:58 AM haha.... Us old dawgs refuse to change! We still think Cubic Inches. I won't buy metric tools, instead use a cresent wrench.:madtalkin |
