View Full Version : Mechanics, Experts and Gurus

As you may have already noticed, each forum now has a section at the top which will show the names of the most qualified people to ask technical questions in each specific area. For example, if I were really great at repairs in to the Northstar engine, you'd see my name at the top of the Northstar Performance and Technical Information forum. Being that you'd see I was a mechanic, expert or guru, you could ask me questions directly.

Everyone starts out as a "Mechanic". You'll notice a "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" icon to the right of each name. These buttons are used to give feedback stating whether or not this person helped you or not. If a member of this team gets a yet undetermined amout of positive feedbacks, they'll move up the ranks into either the Expert or Guru status. If a member of this team gets a yet undetermined amount of negative feedbacks, they'll either be moved down from Expert or Guru status, or moved out of the program entirely.

But wait! Before that, we'll make sure we do our best to find out why this team-member is having trouble helping people. Nobody just gets left out to dry...

Interested in our program? Have any thoughts, comments or suggestions? Speak up!

Thank you,

Sal Collaziano

Hmm.. Its a good concept, but Im not sure I think its necessary.....

Ive been a newbie on many sites, and it doesnt take me long to figure out who the know-alls are.....!

Well, consider never being here before and needing a really, really quick answer. This will help you flag down the right person ASAP. Furthermore, you sometimes get many different opinions - and this may help you to decide which opinion to go along with.

Thats true...... And I guess I've never really been in that boat....... :D

But, there is almost always someone ther to give an answer to whatever question there is..... And its usually within 24hours......

Good idea, but I personally dont think its necessary......

Good idea, but I personally dont think its necessary...I don't think the question is whether it's necessary...I think the question is whether it will be an enhancement to the Board.

Look at it this way.. This is a way to distinguish who's been helping people and who's been doing it well. There's no other way to quickly find out other than searching the forums extensively - which takes time and effort...

Of course, not everyone who's helpful will be listed - but there can certainly be more than one person per forum, per category...

Its fine with me whatever happens....... That seems like a decent deal......

for additional site enhancement, you may want to consider a spot to post what members do for a living and/or what they have done in the past .. there are plenty who would love to gloat, boast and show off their skills and knowledge ...

people that come to the site for a "view" :coolgleam and find a reason to stay, whether related to their own car or to whatever need :coffee: they found, would be good .. right ?

this site is not much different than any local store .. the most difficult thing is to get a new client to walk into the store :welcome: for the first time .. once that happens, find a way to keep the client inside :) and coming back ...

btw, gotta tell you, i love the smilies, but being displayed 6 across eats way too much of my screen .. can these be displayed, let's say 3 across?

I think it is a great idea and will enhance the effectiveness of this board.

I readily admit I am "mechanically-challenged" and can use all the help I can get.

Keep up the good work. This site rocks...

Why do I need to receive e-mails about what is going to be done with the forum? The last one about format was more about forum managers and the ever exciting "happenings in forum world" than Cadillac.

Now, another "what we're going to do and by the way what do you think" announcement. Asking a volunteer for free information and then letting the recipient that did not know the answer in the first place give a thumbs up or a thumbs down sounds like a bunch of little girls or ancient Romans.

Why don't all of you forum operators and operators in waiting do your forum thing privately and then you can give yourselves a thumbs up or down based on the success of your venue.

I thought this was about CADILLAC.

wes,

insults like this are to be expected from an immature cow pusher with a name like BLT ... i can think of another site where BLT would fit right in ...

Seems pointless. Its not like you can pm them to make sure they can see your thread or anything. But you can waste your time on pointless stuff like this rather than doing something helpful it's not up to me.

Sounds like a good idea. Seems like you'll be able to get an accurate response more quickly. Also might help eliminate some of the misplaced posts and extra searching involved.

Don't mess with Texas.

BLT, you can turn the e-mail feature off. Click on your "USER CP" button, it'll take you there.

Well, maybe we should decide on a few "experts" to get us started......

I guess it's a good idea beacuse it shows what people know, but like elwesso said it usually doesn't take too long to figure out who knows what. And sometimes even know it alls can be wrong. If people start their posts with "A Question for Sal" or something like that all the time it might get annoying after a while too. On the other hand if someone is guessing at an answer and someone who's supposed to know about it answers at least you'd know which person is probably right.

It would be good to know how much trust you can put in someone's advice. I like the idea, but as a rating system only. What happens when the really helpful people start getting swamped with "I need your help" messages? They say, "I've had enough of this" or "I've already got a job" :bighead: and stop helping. IMHO, anyway.

Rick

We should make a requirement, like brougham said, that people dont put in the title "a question for......", because that doesnt really help..... Plus, as members use the search function, it will be TERRIBLE if people have to sift through 50 threads saying "a question for......"

BeelzeBob
11-09-03, 11:31 AM
Right. Any questions directed AT somebody could be like this:

Elwesso: How do I fix my whatever...

Being that I don't want anybody to feel left out, there will likely be quite a few Mechanics, Experts and Gurus in each area. This way we're not loading up any few people with questions - and we're not leaving anybody out.

Some people might feel 'lesser' if their name isn't up there. So, add it up! Other people who aren't as technically saavy wont mind at all...

Do we have any takers yet? Who'd like to help?

Excellent idea. Being new to the forum, this would help me a lot.
Most of us don't have time to waste filtering through the muck. So any time savings is a plus.

Personally, I just like to put my questions to everybody, so I don't really think it's necessary. I don't like the idea of singularization when it comes to information. :bulging:

I think its a most helpful resource. our fellow cadillac dudes can get what they need and be on their way. :) But what about those of us who may own a "Classic" cadillac? or a "odd model" caddy (ie: 1959 Cadillac ambulance)? what can we do there?
im gone.

Sorry I haven't logged on to this site in a long time. (over a month). Which may be one problem with your suggestion. What if someone ( expert for example) is asked a question but doesn't log on for some time? That sort of leaves the person asking the question hanging in the breeze....By the way, I've been involved in modifying an old 425 engine, which has left me with lots of info on that particular engine, everything from port grinding to designing the piston domes for Ross Pistons for my project. But I'd hate for someone to be depending on me for an answer and then I don't show up here for another month
