Be careful of what you use, so you don't hurt the finish on the wood. I use a soft cloth and just plain water, or a little glass cleaner on my STS.

Ill second (or third) that the glass cleaner seems to work best, leaves a nice clean shine. Ive tried Armor-all on the trim but it leaves glaze and streaks. Ive not tried wood cleaner like pledge, but since its not real wood anyhow that wouldnt be necissary. Anyway, some windex is the answer.

Hmm caddydaddy, i guess i was unaware that GM hired millions of little gnomes to carve exotic wood dash trim for hundreds of thousands of Caddys.:cookoo::hitstick:

Actualy according to the brochure for the 98+ STS it says "Genuine Zebrano Wood trim" However because it is heavily coated in some sort of plastic coating pledge wouldnt be needed. I just use a damp cloth on mine?

That's very funny and all, but I hate to tell you you're mistaken. The wood is real, albeit with a thick coat of clearcoat. Maybe the wood is fake in lower priced volume sellers, but it hasn't been fake in Cadillacs for quite a few years.

Yeh it's Zebrano wood, if you take any piece of trim off, you can tell.

However, in my Escalade there are a quiet few peices of fake wood trim, however in my STS i belive most of it is genuine. In a 55k car its not unreasonable to have a little bit of genuine wood, I dont know why it seems so absurd?

Damp cloth to clean. If the finish is hazy/scratched, then you can buff it back with some good furniture polish, just don't get it on the leather!

'92 - '04 Sevilles: All factory wood is genuine African Zebrano. Beware of the crappy aftermarket stuff that some apply over stereos, pw/pdl controls, etc.
'92 - E.O.P. Eldos: Same as above.
'94 - Current Deville: Base model uses faux wood. Deville D'Elegance and Concours models, as well as the newer DHS and DTS use genuine Zebrano wood.
'97 - '02 Catera: Faux wood.

Check the replacement costs for these wood panels with your local dealer, and you'll see which are fake and which are real. Not even GM would charge a few hundred bucks for a piece of plastic.

I had quite a few pieces of the wood trim replaced on my STS, under warranty (good thing), but the dealer was telling me how much the pieces are! INSANE!

The Wood Trim piece on my dash has kind of fogged up a little in some spots due to exposure to sunlight. I heard some cars had a slight problem with this. What's weird is that the other pieces around the car don't have the same problem. Is there anything I can use to clean that up? It sees like it's the clearcoat covering the wood itself that's gotten fogged up? Has anyone else had this rpblem?

Here is exactly what you need.

Go to an Automotive Paint Supply house. Ask them for a quart, (only small size it comes in, unless you want it in the gallon) of 3M Finnese II micro polish. Its pricey so try and get them to give you a jobber discount.

The wood is spayed with a an acrylic enamel clear coat, similiar to marine varnish. Finnese will make it shine like new. Just rub it on and polish. The only time it won't work is if the wood has faded or the clear coat has fogged all the way through.

The product is designed for body shops to remove swirl marks and used as a final detail before applying polish.

I discovered its polishing abilities 20 years ago when I restored one of my hot rods, which had a wood dash and kick panels. After about 40 coats of marine varnish, and wet sanding with 2000 grit sand paper the finish just did not suite me. My Paint supplier suggested the Finnese and I have been sold on it ever since. The finish on the wood went from really good to 3-dimensional. the thick coat of Marine varnish really stood out, almost like could put your hand behind it. I use it on all my cars at least two or three times a year just to give them that silky smooth feeling before putting wax or glaze on them. I let a buddy of mine a few years ago use some on a dulled convertible rear window, and it make it look like it was brand new.

Thanks. I'm gonna give my friend wh runsa body sop back home, and see if he can get a old of it for me. There's a pepboys near me that sells automotive paint too, and I'll take a look tomorrow and see if they carry, or can get a hold of it for me. Hopefully the clear hasn't gotten fogged all the way through, so I guess I'll just have to give it a try and see what happens.

Hello I am new here and I just got my 1999 SLS and I LOVE THIS CAR! I have been cleaning it for a couple of days now and the one thing that has been bugging me is the wood trim. The previous owner must have used like armor all or some other silcone based product and it left a gunk all over it and it was greasy to the touch. I play guitar and was polishing it last night when it hit me ..... Duh! I took my Gibson guitar polish and a felt cloth ..... It looks like brand spanking new. If it works on the fine woods of guitars then why not my new fine wood dash?

Thanks to all who provide this forum. It is truly a great resource.
