I was just at Midway chevy of phoenix yesterday wanting to test drive the new Cobalt SS only to be told they never got any of their SS's because GM ran out of their spec tires and stopped production until more tires are available!

How nutty is that?!? Couldnt even test drive a vehicle because they didnt have stupid 215/45/17's laying around somewhere @ GM.

no wonder gm is doing poorly.

thats a weird size tire .....dont think ive heard of that size on anything GM is presently produceing ...

but your right , why did it happen ? cars anymore are built on a "just in time" basis , the tires are offloaded from the delivery truck at about the moment the first spot weld is applied to the unibody of the car the tire is intended for ...which means GM has a big problem ...

the cobalt coupe was dealyed for a little while for body problems ....so maybe the SS got hurt by that too

oh yea, and that reminds me, i read that gm set the rev limiter to 6250 rpm because they never bothered doing long term durability testing anything higher then that.

god, the short cuts gm makes sometimes..fun little car though.

bmw tested the new m5 motor to a reliable 10k rpm limit, even though the limiter is officially 8250.

and im pretty sure it was 215/45/17.. i ended up going to a different dealership and driving one and looked at the tires and they were 215/xx/17's.

i really like the gunmetal rims on the cobal, nice pieces.

im rambling, i should go. =oi

judgeing by how ecotec conecting rods look i wouldnt want to spin it much more than 6500 ...after dealing with nissan SR20s for years i know how a bottom end should look if the needs to stand up to 7500 or 10,000 rpm ..the ecotec bottom end is a far cry from the discontinued nissan engine ...

i also wonder how that roots type blower on the SS operates as the RPMs increse from a flow efficentcy standpoint everything ive ever been trained on with blowers never ran past 4,000 rpm ....just the nature of diesels LOL ...

yah id like to drive one of those ss cobalts, hell i havent even drove a box stock cobalt ....there nice looking little cars , and one hell of a step up from the old cavailer ...and there doing very well in the Speed Channel cup ....i think they won last wekend in there class for the first time beating of all things a beemer ....

Thats because it's supercharged and designed to make it's power at a lower rpm and have more usable torque at street rpm. The same sized engine, naturally aspirated, would need to spin a lot higher to make the h.p. numbers and would lose a lot of low end grunt.

Stoneage Caddy, the bottem end on the supercharged engine is a lot beefier than the standard engine!;)

Running out of tires is not GM.s fault, the tire supplier agrees to deliver them on a set date, for certain production runs, if they don't get there GM can't build the car.:hmm:

the engine feels turbocharged.. its really weird, there is NO power below like 2800rpm, and then suddenly it starts pulling. interestingly i saw a dyno where the car put 197hp to the wheels, which means the car makes more hp then advertised.

still should have done better then the 6.9 0-60.

Sounds like the tire supplier didn't do a R@R, aka, Run at Rate to prove to GM they could supply the tires they claimed.

Shutting down a production line is often fines in the millions of dollars per day, depending on the carline. Cobalt SS is lower production, so maybe not that bad, but owch, I wouldn't want to be that tire supplier!
