: Requesting assistance...

Hello, everyone... I've been SERIOUSLY looking into getting us on a dedicated server. You've probably already noticed that pages are loading very slowly lately. We've got hundreds of people on the site at any given time around the clock - Not only in the forums, but around the whole site.

What does this mean for me? $400.00 per month out of pocket.. This started as a cool hobby nearly a year ago - but now it's costing me $4800.00 per year in hosting fees - not including the $300.00 setup fee, vBulletin, PhotoPost, a VERY SLICK Classifieds system (coming soon) that I can only PRAY people will use to help relieve some of the costs, and my personal time..

Time! I didn't think of THAT one.. Right now I just maintain a website and a bulletin board. Well, that all changes when you've got a dedicated server on your hands. I need to manage updates, security, email and a whole slew of other things I never imagined I'd be doing.. My hobby is now a part-time job.

If you ever look into getting your own dedicated server for any reason, it's a little tricky.. First it's $300 per month. Then the 'Control Panel' is an extra $30.00 monthly fee. Then the backup (a must have) is atleast $75.00 per month. Additional memory, bandwidth and drive space is even more...

Now, more than ever, I'm hoping to find some Supporting Members (http://www.cadillacforums.com/subscribe.html) and Supporting Vendors (http://www.cadillacforums.com/subscribe.html). If you know of anyone who may want to advertise their Cadillac-related business to a large group of Cadillac enthusiasts, please spread the word.

This place is growing far faster than the current web-server can handle. At the moment, pages are loading slowly - sometimes not at all - and problems are popping up behind the scenes (last week's access problem) as a result. I can't even log in with FTP to make changes on the site right now. As it stands, we'll all be getting 'page cannot load' errors by the end of the year. The CPU-load is astronomical.

Unfortunately, I can't handle the financial side of all this by myself. I was not prepared for this site to take off like it did. Even if I did, I can't give myself a $5000.00 raise at my job. I thought about getting a part-time job, but then I wouldn't be around enough to manage a server. I need help!

So please, take a look at the benefits (http://www.cadillacforums.com/subscribe.html) of a Supporting Member or Supporting Vendor account. I promise I will do whatever I can to improve on what's already listed there as soon as I can. I'm NOT one to ask for financial assistance from anyone - but I honestly cannot pull this one off alone...

To those of you who are already helping to support the site, thank you very much. Your donations and subscriptions are very-much appreciated. And as you know, they've already gone back into the site (PhotoPost, for example).

Thank you very much...

I guess my question is, how do I do what I want to do ?
Since I come here so much I thought it only fair for me to suport the site. But if I try to go do it again, my only options concern becoming a supporting vendor. I guess I could create another account, but that's generally frowned upon. Any ideas ?
I don't have a problem supporting a site that I tie up bandwidth on.

Hi Bob.. Thank you for being concerned. You're already a Supporting Member so you're helping out in just the way I need. If there were 96 people doing exactly what you were doing, the cost would be covered. I know that's a long-shot, but it's worth a try...

At any cost, I do accept "donations" with the "donate" button up top. But, I'd rather see people get more of a return than simply logging-in and a note on the "about" page...

Everyone's situation is different, some can help, some can't. Personnaly, I have to do something to atone for my money grubbing UAW days.(snide smile here)
This si exactly what every growing site goes through. That's why they end up as pay-per-view. And I don't want that here. People lucky enough to get a Caddy as a first car need somewhere to go for help, and they probably can't donate.

Thank you very much, guys.. We're on our way to making this happen. I'm really anxious to get this whole thing running the way it should be. Pages that load instantly without ever having to turn users away...

Thanks again for your help!

No, the Mrs refers to ebay as my porn. I'm not allowed to look at anything other than that. I was talking mostly about some newspapers that I liked to read, but can't now without a subscription.

I'm gonna take a minute here to thank Sal for all the time and effort he puts into this site. I'm not sure you guys have any idea how much work goes on behind the scenes. The growth rate here is really incredible - would anyone care to guess how many members we'll have on our second birthay (14 months from now)? 12,000? 15,000? 20,000? Any of these figures is possible given our rapid expansion.

This Board is a resource for finding out about Cadillacs. And it's value as a resource grows with every post, every new member. But it's more than that - it's a Community...it's a great place to hang out, exchange ideas, vent, lurk, bs, and whatever else it is we do when we're not reading or writing technical posts.

This is a critical time for the CadillacForums - the site is becoming very slow due to all the traffic here. If we don't upgrade, existing members will start to get frustrated, and new people will not be so quick to register. A small invesment in the site now will pay great dividends in the future by making the Board more pleasant to be on but more importantly by giving us room to grow. So please, everyone who can, everyone who wants this Board to continue to thrive...become a Supporting Member, Supporting Vendor or give a donation. See if you can get a vendor to support us. We need to do whatever it take to get enough support to bring the CadillacForums to the next level. It will be so worth it...

I wouldn't worry about the second birthday when the first one isn't even passed yet.

Earlier sal mentioned about the server bogging down i really notice it in the afternoon. It takes awhile for pages to load. Come on people chip in so we can get this moving.

What about contacting some of the vendors that are on ebay all the time selling Cadillac parts ? There's a guy there, toolman, always selling active-passive strut conversions. I know that's talked about here quite a bit. I know there are other constant vendors there, and they's have to see the benefit in an ad here.

If I had any cash I'd become a supporting member, but right now I'm straight broke. I'm getting my provisional liscense in exactly 1 month, and then I can get a job, and eventually I'll have some money and be able to hook this site up.

To all fellow CF members.
I know that situations arise and money is an issue for some. It was for me but i saved for a little and pitched in.
If you can't pitch in today or tomorrow or down the road things you can do is to promote the site. Tell other caddy owners/enthusits about the site. If you go to a car show or a specality shop tell them about the website and see if they will help us out. These are ways that will help our community to stay alive and GROW.
