I've just bought a 2000 SLS that needs headgaskets. Are there any differences between an '00 and earlier versions (~'96) that I should know about?
I've done inserts on N*'s as late as '98s, but nothing later. I plan on continuing with inserts instead of studs, as I have the tooling for inserts and have a 100% success rate.

Differences that will effect the inserting process? No. But there were major changes made to the Northstar in '00. The sticky on swaps in the Northstar forum might be of interest to you.

Harry, if you would like to try one of my SureGrip stud kits let me know. If you do plenty of them I might be able to give you a good deal on the first kit -
^^^ Correction, this is Jake, Evrett forgot to sign out.

I noticed from the sticky that longer headbolts were used in '00.
Is that because of the changes in the heads? Are the dimensions for drilling and tapping the block for inserts the same as earlier engine?

Partially. But the hole depths in the block are different from the upper rows to the lower rows.
