View Full Version : Just raced an 03 Cobra.... HDMLNIUM 06-20-05, 10:58 PM I just got back from hooking up with a friend of mine for a little street race.
We race on the turnpike spur, it is about a 2 1/2 mile stretch.
He ran a couple 13.2's bone stock at New England Dragway a few weeks back. He has since added a CAI and a cat back exhaust, he gain 43 rwhp at the dyno which brought him to 421 rwhp so I think he should be a 12 second car now...
Anyway, we started from a dead stop and he said go and we were off. I got off the line pretty good, no wheel hop and just a bit of tire spin. He got into his a little hard and spun more and I ended up getting him by a car length or so by the time I shifted into second. It was a very close race, so it was a fun one for both of us. I can tell you the Cobras pull good in the higher rpm's, he would come up beside me to my door every time in the top of each gear. When he shifted I would pull a half car away on him and then back up next to me he would come. We both let off at about 160 and we were pretty even when we did. We pulled over into a motel parking lot right off the spur and talked for a while. It was a great race and we both brought our cars up faster than we have before. I have had mine to about 150 before, but this is the first time I have raced up into 5th gear.. I am really hoping for a low 13 second run this Friday when I go to New England Dragway, and would be very pleased if I can crack into the 12's.
Anyway, it was a rush and I thought I would share..
One question, do these cars keep a top speed somewhere on the Nav like on my hand held Garmin? If so I have to go look to see what it reads. This next part you will get a kick out of, I am not use to looking at the digital speed so for some reason when I am going fast I always just read the sweep spedo instead and that was right on 160 when I let off. My friend told me his was just under 160, needle thickness so we were pretty much there I would think.

But I would pull ever so slightly from gear to gear. When he let off, I had gotten about 1 1/2 car lengths. His was bone stock, though.
But surprisingly, a fairly even race. Good stuff.
Glad to see you're taking the training wheels off, Bill.:sneaky: thebigjimsho 06-20-05, 11:10 PM Oh, BTW, I just got my Lingenfelter CAI yesterday. As expected, my flabby butt dyno didn't feel much difference, but the sound under load, near WOT, sounded oh soooo good!:yup: So Bill let me see if I have this correct? Two buddies in about $90,000 worth of cars, barrelling down a public highway at 160 mph, side by side? Damn I wish I could've made it three. BJim,
I did notice a little pickup with the Ling' CAI. I'm no engineer, I actually use traction breaks as a gauge to how much power I'm making. With every mod' I've made the traction breaks when power shifting get longer and longer to the point where the 3-4 shift will now break traction at 90 mph. What a hoot. Who needs a dyno when you're laying rubber at 90 mph. Tell your buddy he needs to learn how to drive the Cobra. I love the V and know how fast it is, but the numbers don't lie.
421 RWHP and 3500 lbs
vs.
(And this is just a high estimate going by you're mods)
380 rwhp and 3800 lbs
I know the V's are fast, but the 03/04 Cobras in a straight line are beasts. Now go to a road course and it's a different story. My father (Sefa01) passed a gutted 1995 Cobra with a swapped 03 s/c engine pushing almost 500 hp on the front straight of Pocono this past Friday right before the clutch went. I'm sure it had something to do with him being a superior driver, however I'm also pretty certain the V was able to take the high speed turns at a much higher rate than that Cobra was able to, as well as killing the Cobra in the twisties in the infield. I looked at the Cobra and talked to the owner and it definetly could handle better than the new Cobras with all the mods he had on it.
Anyways good job outdriving your friend. trekster 06-21-05, 02:27 AM Tell your buddy he needs to learn how to drive the Cobra. I love the V and know how fast it is, but the numbers don't lie.

Anyways good job outdriving your friend. Agreed....Cobras pull harder than our V's. I test drove a 03 cobra a few weeks it pulls a little harder than the v. V-FORCE 06-21-05, 06:14 AM What is it with the people in this forum that every time a V beats a corba its always the driver of the cobra that did wrong. now i've seen more than one person in this forum say that they have won a corbra including my self. so as far as the driver of those corbra not knowing how to drive i dont think so.now i do believe that there are some cars slower than others and that includes corbras.
:rant2: :banghead: HDMLNIUM 06-21-05, 06:38 AM I was one of the ones that said the V's couldn't match up well against a 03-04 Cobra. I have driven them before and been around them and know how they go. My friend can drive and shift fine, this is his third mustang and second one being supercharged. I am going to the dyno today so we will see how my numbers look.
It was a fun race and I promice no Bullshit, that is how the race went...
cvp33,
Yes, it was quite a run and no cars in front of us until the end when we had to hit the brakes. One funny part was as we were stopped side by side there was cars coming through the toll booth behind us. I think that is why my friend didn't give us a count down and just said "are you ready?" I said "yup.." He then said "go!!" lol
After we were parked in the motel parking lot talking this pick up truck went by, then we seen it backing up quick into the parking lot. He backed up next to my friend and said " that was cool as hell, who one?" He then says to us I told my friend you guys would be pulled over talking somewhere.. haha
My friend answers to him " it was pretty even" The guys then said again how cool it was to watch us take off and fade away.. That was pretty good.
Then while we were still sitting there a cop pulled up in the parking lot accross the street. You could tell he was checking us out, so after a couple minutes I said we better head out. Fred said I will let you go first.. haha
I pulled out and headed down the road and I see the cop car start moving. I am going down a hill and I don't see coming at all and think to myself... cool.
Fred calls me on my cell phone about 15 minutes later and tells me he just left the officer.. I laugh and said really? He said yup, he stayed in the parking lot and I guess the cop come over behind him and then he started to leave. Blue lights and fred was pulled over. I guess a lot of drug deals go down in the motel parking lot, right off the highway and all and the cop just asked him a bunch of questions. He let him go after a bit and I got to laugh at him over the phone.. He said he knew he shouldn't have bought an Orange Cobra they stand out to much. He then says maybe he should get a Cadi since they get over looked.. haha
It was a blast, and I wouldn't have thought it would have been such an even race from 0-to about 160, but it was.... :coolgleam
Oh and cvp33 it is only a 2 lane spur on each side so you would have had to run in the breakdown lane to go three wide.... :2thumbs:
Bill v force you won a cobra? in a raffle? if you are going to sell it let me know i want to buy it. Common sense would tell you that the cobra SHOULD beat the V series, simple as that. My friend Slim, in his 03 cobra, goes 12.00's on street tires with about 400 to the wheels. He can drive.
Bill said when the cobra would shift gears, he would pull half a car length on him. In my mind, the guy in the cobra, isn't shifting as fast as he should be. Thats not takeing anything away from bill, cause obviously, he was on his game, he was driving his car pretty good, to keep in front of the more powerful cobra.
Yes, Cobra's are limited to 155mph but, that usually goes away after the first tuneing session.

I was also one one who said this. I've owned both, I think I have a pretty good handle on which car pulls harder and where. Me, my old G-Tech, Edgewater Sport Park, and National Trails raceway can tell you that at least between my Cobra and my V, the Cobra was faster on average to the tune of 1/2 sec in the quarter.
There's overlap - my quickest V times were well into the Cobra range of times.
Anyhoo, IMO the Cobras have the advantage thru the 1/4mile. The Vs have it up top. Doesn't mean every dig race = win for the Cobra or every rolling race = win for the V. But remember, you are on a V forum... :hmm:
Like we see here: Dig race, win for the V. Booyah!
And from HDLNIUM's own description it doesn't sound like he outpowered his friend. Paraphrasing: "he spun, lost a car length on first... each time he shifted I pulled ahead... and in between shifts he was pulling back up on me". Reclaiming a full car length lost in 1st gear off the launch ain't easy when the cars are closely matched. These are the best kind of races IMO.
Moving along........
Good Kill HDLNIUM! Sounded like a blast. So let me get this right - you two went right after a toll booth? And no ticket? Very nice! HDMLNIUM 06-21-05, 10:50 AM Good Kill HDLNIUM! Sounded like a blast. So let me get this right - you two went right after a toll booth? And no ticket? Very nice!
About 800 feet past the toll both we stopped and went from there. There is a on ramp to the spur right after the toll booth and that is where we came from...:yup: Thats awesome. Gave em quite a show. Love the bit about the pickup pulling up and congrating. That woulda been me. lol kimcheejeegae 06-21-05, 12:33 PM I just got back from hooking up with a friend of mine for a little street race.

I don't understand your math... an 03 cobra.. like your friend puts out STOCK.. 390 hp CRANK. Most 03-04s will put down on the dyno around 350 wheel... so if he gained 43 wheel with an intake and exhuast... that puts him at 390 wheel... how did you get 421 wheel?? Those numbers are right from the Dyno, he dynoed 378 to the wheels stock. No math on my part just the numbers I was told. I will be going there tonight for a couple dyno runs myself..
Bill knockout_tx 06-21-05, 01:05 PM Sounded like you guys had great fun, wish I could have been there as well. Now for the guys going out looking for Cobras, be very carful there are some high HP on pump gas running around(Houston Texas). Most of those guys won't play anyway, but if you push hard enough.............quick end to a good day.
605 RWHP 93 Octane ...most 03's put out around 380ish to the wheels,. stock. That may be a tad high for an average, I'd say more like 360s.
knockout_tx: 605rwhp on 93 octane is impressive. Very nice. Best round here was ~550rwhp on Sunoco 94 (this was summer '04). I did a best 534rwhp on pump gas before I jumped ship.
Lemme guess: Kenne Bell? Ported Eaton? Pullied to the moon? willsctsv 06-21-05, 03:20 PM How come nobody has mentioned gears? Trans ratio, and rear?
That plays a major role are they geared similarly? OCESCALADE 06-21-05, 05:04 PM 355s for the cobra and 373s i think for the V. The problem with the Cobra is that once you do any power adders you become slower because you cant put it to the ground. So after upgrading to better tires (GSD3) than the crappy F1's I dont get the wheel hop and spin out of the hole in 1st gear. I does depend a lot on the driver in a race and if they got thier suspension down. HDMLNIUM 06-21-05, 08:43 PM My bad, his Cobra is an 04 and after my low dyno numbers tonight I had to get him down there to see if it was the heat, 90 degrees in the shop and humid. It wasn't the heat as he gained a couple from his last dyno, he has 40 more h.p to the wheels than I do, so I guess I am just a better driver.. lol:thumbsup:

Yes the Grand National was bad, my father had a 87 and smoked my best friends Firebird so he went out and bought one the next week. My friend and I had a lot of fun in that car, it did great doughnuts too.... More than once we ended up on someones lawn...:shhh::histeric:

wicked.:lildevil: Very nice. And I bet its still a wonderful daily driver too if you want it to be. Thats the beauty of those cars. Not many 600hp cars around that can remain a good daily driver and STILL make 600hp anytime anywhere on tap. Damn few indeed.
And by "damn few" I mean zero boosted-4cylinder imports. :) | |
