View Full Version : How ugly was the diff fluid?

I just drained the differential fluid out at 3200miles. The stuff looked like chocolate metal flake paint with the viscosity of oil-based paint.

I collected about a quart and a half and replaced with additive (about 1/2 pint) and a 36-38 ounces of GM differential fluid.

Did everyone else see very fine metal in the old oil from the first change like I did?

Sounds about right. I did mine at 1,800.

Yes, even at <500 miles when I swapped the first time. The second swap at about 1,500 miles convinced me that I won't need to do it again...ever...unless I get bored.

I just did mine at 1k and the magnet had metal mud on it...like mercury. I found no chunks or hard pieces, just paste. The fluid was pretty ugly, too. I used Royal Purple diff fluid and Red Line additive. The RedLine additive had the GM part number on its bottle...something like it conforms to the GM standard of part blahblahblah. I'll dump it in 2k miles and see whats up.

Thanks

I was pretty concerned when I saw the dirty fluid then started getting PO'd at Cadillac again. I'll change fluid again at 6000 just to satify curiousity.

Black stuff pretty normal if you've seen ring gear out of box. Best to change fluid sooner than later to be sure.

I'm wondering if RP plus additive too much, RP already has additive. I put RP in neat. No noise so far. Shortly after change I went to parking lot and went 3 lock to lock circles to lube clutch packs, good idea to do every so often anyway.

Yep...the Royal Purple already has the additive...and I have 4K miles without a hitch.

How many quarts did yours take? Mine took 1 quart + the additive.

One quart and very small change. With the additive, I felt I would err on the safe side...hopefully. We'll see whats the deal when I drop it next.

About the same as ACE. I just used a little out of the 2nd quart I bought. Next time all I'll get is one quart plus additive.

Mine was 1 and almost 1/2. I figure quart and half is cheap cheap cheap, more change is better.

Maybe I missed the rim or forgot to lift the lid...:drinker

Yep, just over a quart...and I might have made a mess while I was at it :D

I'm just over 11K now and I'm going to change the diff' fluid again. 1st change was Mobil 1, this time I'm going with the GM stuff. Ordered from Pace Performance, thanks to whomever posted the website. Painless order and delivery.

Ahhh, yes. Pace Performance, as in Jim Pace Performance? Great deals on GM crate motors...but I digress.

CVP33 - let us know what your fluid looks like, will you?

I'm not one to stay quiet about much.

Well, I planned to do some cheap analysis of the metal I saw in the dirty differential fluid that I drained from the V two weeks ago after the Cleveland get together. I had collected a little more than one quart of the old stuff that looked like bad metal flake paint - it appeared that there was very fine metal in the fluid.

I cut the dirty fluid 50:50 with paint thinner and still took most of three hours to filter all the diff fluid. I used a conical coffee filter in a plastic funnel. I vigorously mixed the dirty fluid before I filled the filter in the funnel. After about 15 minutes, the liquid drained out and I would re-charge. I made very sure that I was getting any solids inthe fluid.

Surprisingly, there was very little metal in the filter. If I had to guess, I would say that it was in the order of 1 or 2 grams, at most.
