bbobynski,
I tried to pm you, but for some reason it says that I do not have priveledge to do that. I have the P0741 code on a car I just bought (1999 STS). I live in Florida and flew out to Dallas to pick it up and drive it home. About 150 miles outside of Dallas the SES light came on, turns out that it was P0741. I have been doing ALOT of reading on these boards about this code, and finally decided to take the car to a caddy dealership to let them troubleshoot the problem. As expected, they came back with a $2400 estimate, saying that the torque converter and "upper valve body" need to be replaced. I asked them a bunch of questions about how they came to that conclusion (did they rule out the wiring, brake switch, ECM, etc etc), just like you have advised others to do. They said that they hooked up a tech 2 tool to it and "commanded" the VCC to lock up. They said that it is slipping beyond the limits (200 something or another), and that definitively showed that the torque converter and upper valve body would need to be replaced. I am wondering if this all sounds correct, and if they might have missed something else that may be causing the problem. I was also wondering a little bit about the aftermarket converters. I have heard that Yank makes a converter, but when I went to their website, I was not able to find one for my car. Do you know if they actually make one, and if so, would it be beneficial to the performance to replace the stock one with a Yank? Thanks for taking the time to read all this, and any help you could give would be much appreciated.
