How do you actually hook up a MP3 player. Like a Ipod to the Caddy? I do not have the Navigation system. Was looking to purchase an Ipod but want to make sure I can hook it up.

Was thinking a FM Modulator.. any thoughts would help.

In my STS, I have RCA hookups in the center console. I'm not sure if the models without Navigation have it or not.

You can burn the MP3's to disc and play them with the CD player
in the car. One disc holds over 200 MP3's.

I understand that Don. But I would really like to get a Ipod.
Where is the hook-up Oakland??

Mine is in the center console at the rear of the compartment, readily visible. Since it has R/L Audio and a Video jack, I wonder if it just in the DVD Navigation model?

wick05, I would guess the FM modulator would be the simplest and least expensive way to tie in an I-Pod or other mp3 player. Audio quality should be reasonable, maybe not as good as a direct connection into the receiver, but that might be a pain to tear into the dash to get to the back of your receiver to run into rca inputs (assuming they are there). I have not seen a service manual, wonder if Helms would have one.

Edit: I fould the answer to my question, Helms does sell the 2005 STS Service Manual for $135.

ZZ-- I have access to the GM manuals on SI2000. Its not the question of the work, I just want to make sure it works before dropping that kind of money on something that I will never use if I do not use it in the car.

I appreciate what you are saying.

Based on my limited knowledge and reading, I would belive the direct connection would give a better, cleaner, stronger, signal than the FM Modulator.

The FM modulators use a weak FM signal sent on an unused frequency and can be prone to interference. If you are in New York, LA, etc where almost all bands are used, interference may make it unusable. Where I live, it would likely not be a problem. Monster (~$70) makes one that also charges your IPod battery. Sonnet PodFreq (~$100) uses FM modulator but uses a dock connector instead of a headphone jack to improve the signal to noise ratio. I would guess the newest models have improved from the earlier versions which were somewhat questionable and worked well only about half the time.

Some companies are coming out with factory-radio specific wiring harness connectors for IPod dock ports. I have not specifically seen one for the STS.

I also saw a Direct Connection FM Modulator that connects to any factory system via the unit's FM antenna jack. It has no thru-the-air loss since its a direct connection and they claim no outside FM interference. AudioVox Direct Connect FM Modulator ($60, I saw one for $45 somewhere else).

I'm not sure at all what the STS audio systems have in back for
connections such as auxillary inputs or rca jacks. Would the SI2000 show that by chance?

Let us know what you decide.

I have a v6 without the NAV. It doesn't come with the center console RCA inputs. If anyone knows if the Audio system has auxiliary inputs in the back please let me know. I'm trying to set up a car PC for my STS.
I have no clue of how to take apart the center console or dash to check for it myself.
Thanks

Guido.. The radio does not have RCA outputs nor aux outputs.

Thanks Wick05...
I really don't want to go the FM transmitter or modulator route...is that the only way to hook up an external audio source to this audio system?

Does it have a CD changer input?

I've heard of hi-jacking the XM radio input on the back, but not sure if it ispossible with this system.

I noticed that some of you have used the center console for ipod input. Has this worked? I have a photo iPod that came with a connection cable that has Video, Left, Right connections. I connected the cable to my center console input jacks but I am not sure how to get the sound. Essentially nothing happens when I plug in the ipod to the center console. Has anyone had any luck with this? What is the use for the inputs in the center cossole? Thanks in advance. :crying2:

Go to http://www.cadillacfaq.com/faq/answers/auxaud/index.html at www.cadillacfaq.com (http://www.cadillacfaq.com).

Reed has a great article on how to add a pure line in auxillery input for iPod or other mp3 player to the stock CTS-V stereo system.

Maybe the same approach would work for you STS owners.

once you plug in the device you want to use in the center console, such as an ipod, a playstaion, xbox, dvd player, anything....you have to press the AUX button on the dash...this will probably take you to a phone screen. At this screen on the left hand side you will see a Video/In button....press that and it should connect with whatever you plugged in. However if the device your using has video or picture the that will be lost if you take it out of park. Howvere the sound should still be there...hope this helps

Thanks so much for the advice. It worked!! I really appreciate it. The only thing that is not happening is that the pictures are not being displayed while the car is parked. Not a big deal, as I was mainly interested in the music. Thanks again so much. Niether the dealer or GM knew how to do this.

Really miss using my iPod in my '05 STS 1SE. The salesman missed a bet when he didn't tell me the nav system would add a jack for it in the center console. I might have bought a package that included nav.

I happily listened to my iTunes in the '94 SLS through the cassette adapter. ('What's a cassette?') My dealer's service department sent me to a car stereo shop here in suburban Chicago for installation of a jack. They propose to install an iPod interface http://www.peripheralelectronics.com/web/ipod2car.asp for $399.95. Seems pretty heavy ($$$), but I guess its only once. This unit charges the iPod and lets me use the CD controls and radio controls to select playlists, volume, etc.
