View Full Version : multichannel DVD audio flyboy767 06-03-05, 09:52 PM I just bought a pre-recorded DVD audio disc that is 5.1 channel surround. I thought the "multichannel" button on the audio page of the navigation radio was supposed to be illuminated when a multichannel dvd was playing. Mine is not. Is there something that needs to be turned on besides centerpoint audio?
Thanks for any input on this. Cold Canuck 06-04-05, 09:31 AM On my 5.1 DTS encoded DVDs, the Multichannel "button" is illuminated automatically when the player recognizes the the DVD as DTS encoded .
If I press it it goes out and the sound just becomes stereo or simulated multichannel (Centerpoint).
Try pressing the button to see if it lights, the difference in sound should be obvious. From the NAV manual, pg 3-12:
The system will play DTS-type discs and tracks and Dolby® tracks in surround sound.
So it looks like the DVD-Audio discs have to be DTS or Dolby encoded for the multi-channel to work. scottc@broadcom.com 06-24-05, 06:59 PM DVD Audio disks have mulitple recordings within each disks. Typically you each disk has a standard two channel stereo, and enahnced two change stereo, and a DTS 5.1. IF they have a 5.1 recording you must chose that during set up. There are 3 possible ways to do this depending on the DVD Audio.
1. While in PARK, use the cursor and go through the menu set up via the graphical user interface.
2. While in Park (or moving very slow) use the "Search" button and select 1, 2, or 3. This represents different "groups" within the DVD. Some DVD Audios have two or three groups.
3. While in Park (or moving very slow) touch the Audio button. On some DVDs this toggles between Stereo, DTS, and Dolby Digital.
First problem is you must be in park to set this stuff. We should ALL complain to GM. Second each DVD-Audio seems to be different. I expect this to resolve itself over time.... flyboy767 06-24-05, 07:40 PM Thanks for the info. I tried this in Park-selected 5.1 channel surround on the dvd menu and it still does not play in "multichannel" with the dolby icon showing for audio output. The icon I get for audio is PPCM or LPCM, and I can use centerpoint or normal with these displayed, whereas multichannel cannot also have centerpoint. The Bose demo dvd that came with the car will play correctly after selecting play 3 times. I guess I still don't know if it is the car, or the multiple dvd audio formats available. DID OR HAVE YOU FIGURED THIS OUT?
I'M HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS TWO YEARS LATER.
THANKS. bigdog9586 12-08-06, 08:40 PM What year is your STS? I have 07 and got no Bose demo dvd. Only DVD I got was for the Nav. Did my dealer goof?:banghead:

I have a couple of dvd's that were supposedly remastered into 5.1 audio (Chicago, etc) that do not play in mutichannel even though they say 5.1 dolby digital.
The demo disk came with the 2005 STS had a few things in it that Cadillac later figured out did not work (bluetooth phone compatability, voice activated commands, etc.) so I don't know if they still provide a disc or not. flyboy767 12-09-06, 10:04 AM The Bose demo disc showed the awesome capabilities of the 5.1 surround sound in the STS. It had classical to rock on it and showed the amazing difference between centerpoint and full multichannel sound. Had to go back to my dealer and specifically request this. Don't know if they still make one for 2007's or not. graphicguy 12-09-06, 01:32 PM You're going though the same issues I'm fighting with my dealer about. Fact is, the 5.1 Dolbe DVD-A disks don't play in true 5.1 mode. I've gone through about $300 worth of DVD-A disks that I own. None of them work. I think I got one disk to play one song in DVD-A mode in true 5.1. But, I couldn't get the rest of the songs on the disk to play (it's a DVD-A disk by Dishwalla) in 5.1.
My dealer refuses to admit that it doesn't work. He ended up putting a DVD-Video disk (Cars) in to show me how 5.1 does work. But, even that disk would only play the "trailers" portion of the disk in 5.1. The movie itself would not play in 5.1.
Even the disks that are encoded with both DTS and DVD-A won't play in 5.1, no matter which audio track I select....even while parked.
In addition to that, the VR is worthless....bluetooth recognizes my phone some of the time, but most times it doesn't. VR recognizes a command maybe one out of every 20 commands.
I'm fighting with Cadillac customer service about this now. I drove an Acura TL. All those features worked flawlessly. I showed my dealer how those features should work in the TL. The only thing I'm getting out of them is denial that there are issues with all of these features.
I filed with the BBB and am supposed to hear back by 12/15 whether Cadillac is taking my car back. I've only had mine for 3 mos and less than 3K miles.
This is a $50K car. This is ridiculous.
File with the BBB and let them know you're having the same issues. Maybe if enough of us complain, we can get Cadillac to do something about such poor execution of their "high tech" STS. | |
