"We're already looking at how you might structure a computer that could become conscious. Consciousness is just another sense, effectively, and that's what we're trying to design in computer."

Pearson said that computer consciousness would make feasible a whole new sphere of emotional machines, such as airplanes that are afraid of crashing.

By 2020 Pearson also predicted the creation of a "virtual world" of immersive computer-generated environments in which we will spend increasing amounts of time, socializing and doing business.

He said: "When technology gives you a life-size 3D image and the links to your nervous system allow you to shake hands, it's like being in the other person's office. It's impossible to believe that won't be the normal way of communicating."

It's not the beginning of anything, it's nearly the end.

The ability to make an 'image' speak, think and pass judgement, was predicted long ago. :halo:

But seriously folks...

By the year 2020, I think computerization will actually be far far more advanced than what that article suggests.

I think the average life expectancy in the year 2020 will be > 100. People in their 90s will have the same quality of life as 60 year-olds do today.

I believe our children--when all grown up--will look back and laugh at our feeble technology. The exact same way I look back to my childhood and laugh at the fact that we had only 6 TV channels, 8 Track Tapes & vinyl records, no computers, no cell phones, no internet, no video games, etc. Shit...My parents didn't even have air conditioning and a microwave oven (and that was in the 70s).

I heard back in the 50's people expected us to be further then we are now. Didn't people in the 50's say that we would be driving cars that could fly by the 80's. Who knows and who cares. I worry about today not tomorrow.

In some ways, we're far more advanced than anyone in the 50's ever imagined. People in the 50s just couldn't imagine the possibilities.

For example, I showed my 80 year old uncle my GPS Navigation System last weekend. He was TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY! He didn't even know that such systems existed.

He couldn't believe that I could select from a list of restaurants, and the car would tell me how to get there. He couldn't believe that it knew precisely what road we were on, and that it could plot a course to my house or any address I entered into the system. He was totally blown away by the fact that a woman's voice provided advance notice of when to turn right or left.

He said, "this is better than anything James Bond ever had."

Who in the 70s thought any of this was a possibility?
