Hi Folks
After going through the search, Im a little confused. I have a 97Deville with an intermittent start problem. About once a week (after sitting for a few hours) the car wont start. Key will turn, all electronics are on but no crank whatsoever. The headlights do dim a little when the key is turned (I saw that asked in the search) If I hold the key turned for about 30 seconds, the car will start normally. . Today the car each time it is started is giving a click and then starting immediately but during the click its like the battery is disconnecting and reconnecting quickly because it resets mpg and fuel rate and fuel used. Im thinking battery or cables but was looking for an expert opinion before I start searching
thanx

Start with the battery cables. You are looking for corrosion on the cable end connectors and the battery terminals. Also be alert for corrosion under the cable insulation; if the cable looks puffed-up, be suspicious.

If the engine finally cranks at "normal" speed, your battery is not the problem.

Good luck....

thanx folks

I will certainly pull them and check for corrosion. I moved the negative cable during my break a little and the car started normally without the battery resetting itself so I think from what I see and the advice, the negative battery cable may be the culprit. Any idea on replacement price at the dealer or is this a driveway task??

Do not be concerned about replacement cables before you inspect and clean both ends of the large cables. A paste of baking soda & water will neutralize visible corrosion but you must flush the baking soda paste thoroughly with water.

Disconnect the battery negative terminal first and connect it last.

Now its really getting strange, now im getting intermittent drivers window activity?? (I havent been able to clean the cables yet as I am at work) Any possible relation or coincidence??

You don't need to search for possible relation before you tight up the cables. The problem with cables is so famous, I guess the solution cleaning and tightning) should be sticked on the home page of the forum. If you check the posts, every other has the same problem, and for some reasons owners change batteries, starters and just then check the cables. You move the negative cable and engine starts right away. Isn't enough of proof?
