88 cad in MS

I have an 88 Brougham with the 5.0L 2bbl. It is a 65K orig mile estate car that apparently sat up for an extended period. The car is severely underpowered, and motoroil turns jet black in less than 1k miles despite flushing and several oil changes. The check engine light comes on-code 42-i have replaced the ECM and cleared the code. Car runs approx 15 min without check eng light and then stalls. Restarts immediately and check eng light illuminates. Car does not stall as long as light is on. One technician claims that these cars often have a "false code 42" when there is nothing actually wrong, but that seems unlikely for a low mileage car like this, and does not explain the stalling. Anybody out there got any suggestions?
