I've got a 99 STS with the BOSE and my Passenger side door speaker is shot. It just sort of rumbles and groans and sounds horrible. Are these special order speakers, or can I replace with just about any speaker?

Well, since one speaker went out, why not replace em all :)
Make sure you get the right size speaker then grab some cerwin-vegas and put those in :)

You might want to contact Bose to see if they can rebuild them. I know that several of the Allante owners have had problems with the Bose speakers amps, and there are a few individuals that repair them on the Allantenet.org site that have had them repaired either by either Allante speciality shops or have sent them to Bose directly for repair. Bose has given lifetime warranty on the work they do. I wish I had the Bose system in my car instead of the Delco crap that it came with.

I'm not sure about the Bose speakers -- whether the integrated amplifiers are really INTEGRATED, or if you can replace just the speaker. At some point, the speaker has got to be able to be mechanically isolated from the amplifier, but I think Cadillac claims that they're not separately serviceable.

As far as the magazine, shortly after I bid on my CD changer on eBay, I started watching it for cheap magazines, but they'd get up to near the cost of one from the dealer, and of course it's over eBay so quality is never guaranteed. I sprung for the $70 magazine from the dealership.

Thanks for the replys. I am not going to sink a whole lot of money into this as I have an expensive Impala SS performance habit :) and the caddy is just a daily driver. I may look to see if the speaker can be replaced or rebuilt, and if not will just cut the feed to it.

A '99 STS seems to be an awfully expensive daily driver that you'd just cut the speaker out of if it stopped working! I wouldn't think of doing on that on my ole Nissan, let alone our SLS. ;) I'd consider fixing the speaker -- and at least getting an OEM unit back in there, whether it be from a salvage yard or other source. Tunes must not be your thing (ironic, with a Bose-equipped STS).

I will try to repair it first, but if the expense is very high that would be the only reason I would just cut it. With all the other speakers I may not even notice the difference, but do enjoy the bose sound as my last daily driver STS (94) had it as well. I love the performance and ride more than anything, but the bottom line is that this is my beater car and I dont' want to put too much into it if I can avoid it.
Please don't take offense to the term beater, I really enjoy the car and try to keep them very clean, but do use them every day.

Yeah, I use mine everyday too. I used to have an '84 Cutlass that I drove everyday, but I also showed it in car shows and won 1st place trophies. I don't do that anymore with the Cadillac, but still keep it that level of clean. I know what you mean...tryin' to keep 'em clean and still run 'em every day. I was just surprised to hear of the possibility of cutting the speaker on a '99 STS with Bose system. :D

How's those Caddies run against the Impala? I think that stock vs. stock, the Sevilles are quicker is that right? I know the aftermarket is explosive for the Impalas, though.

See, I don't know. GM says they're not separately serviceable because with the Bose system, there's a mini amplifier right at each speaker. My original question is, how integrated are they really? Couldn't you just unbolt the whole assembly from the car, replace the defective speaker portion, and then bolt it back in? What I don't know is, maybe the speaker is some weird configuration that isn't standard...??

Ha! Yeah, me too. I once had an '87 Regal I bought for $550 bucks. The paint was terrible on it. Ran pretty good, but had a knock in the engine. I went to the junkyard and bought an Olds 403 cui V8 out of a Delta 88 and put it in the Regal and it was awesome! Ahhh...to be 20 again (I'm 23 now). :)

Only GM would be retarted enough to put a mini amp on each speaker.......

I don't know how you you got the STS but if you are even questioning whether or not to fix a speaker, just because you don't want to take any money away from the Chevy, you're certainly no Cadillac enthusiast.
Do yourself a favor and sell the STS to someone that won't crap it up and buy yourself a beater that you can afford to keep up while you dump money into the SS.

BTW dude, no offense, but when you call a cadillac a beater on a cadillac forum, you are asking for it. The only exception is if it has the 4.1 (if its running :D ), or is a cimarron.

If anyone has a 99 STS and considers it his beater, he must have a bentley or something as his baby. The STS has to be worth more than a 94 impala, unless it is totally tricked out.

The guys question was adequately answered by a couple people here. I, for one have seen several posts on other forums where the person posting is just trying to get people stirred up. Not that this guy is TRYING to do that but as was said by Wes, to come on a Caddy forum and call a '99 STS a "beater" is going to cause a little trouble. If anyone finds that incorrect, sorry.

I agree with Jason that we should encourage, but how would you like it if someone called your most treasured possession (and in our case, for the most part it is our caddy) a "beater" is unacceptable. It would be one thing if it was on a chevy forum, but NOT ON A CADDY FORUM, for Gods sake.

Look at the people who have posted in this thread, and many others here. 60-80% of them are moderators. That's like having all management and no labor. New folks come here and see moderators talking back and forth about the new guy -- and how what he's doing is so wrong (to use a cleaner mouth).

I'm not on anyone's side here -- your opinion is completely yours and no one has any right to take that away. Guidelines for public communication, however, are completely different from your opinion... I think the guidelines for public posting on the forum should ban public flaming such as this. If you have a beef with someone, take it up with him personally, not across the list.

Sorry for the diatribes. I helped administer the Oldsmobile G-body mailing list and co-founded it in 1998. We set aside a list of guidelines in the beginning, and we kept reminding people to keep it clean on the list, and I'm used to doing that whenever I see flames and personal attacks (and cussing). We knew that little tikes might be reading with their parents too. Many of the folks on there were young parents who played on the computer with their kids. A clean list was a priority for us. Maybe cadillacforums might consider a set of guidelines like these?

To be honest, if you want the forum to be like that, I'm afraid you're out of luck here and in virtually any other list or forum that is frequented by mostly blue-collar types.
If you only want "G"- rated conversations, and no flaming what so ever, I would suggest that it will be very hard to maintain in this environment. Like it or not, automotive enthusiasts tend to be a more "relaxed" crowd.
Also, many people frequent these forums not only for their Q&A attributes but for their entertainment value. Without some of the "spirited" conversation, this place would be about as fun and attractive as a visit with your accountant.
I understand what you're trying to say but I think that in an effort to attract a large membership, and one with enough varied talents and experiences to be of value to all who join, we all have to try to over-look some "rough-edges" that maybe encountered here.

I come from a places with no "be nice" rules. everyone gets along ok. lots of joking , but amazing tech.

One thing abou this site that's nice is that it's a little bit on the wild side......We're not always pretty (I mean look at dead sled ) But we're always interesting. I've never really gotten very interested in automotive forums 'cause the total tech heads are BORING!!! We answer the questions and do so in a timely fasion. We're also kind of entertaining and fun at the same time that we're providing a forum for info. I really think that it's developed quite by accident into an informative and fun site that's a little crazy and irreverent while still PROVIDING THE SERVICE that it was originally intended to. We are also a bunch of guys that are passionate about our cars and the fun that we have driving and working on them! That's what I think!

With all this talk we've been giving to this guy, we may have just scared him away! I mean look, most of us have 100+ posts, and a few of us are over 700!!! This guy has 3. We have almost 200times more posts then he does. At this stage, we cant afford to loose any members, and if he were to tell people about this, we could even loose more members. While I agree that his statement was a little profound, we didnt necessarily have to chew him out SO MUCH. I think he got the idea after a few comments. I mean basically everyone knows each other, and then when a new member comes in and we chew him out like we chew each other out, he may not take it the same way we do.

The funny thing is that it is not very expensive to replace the speaker. I had to replace the one in the driver's door (the warranty wouldn't cover a speaker) and it was only about $80 from the dealer for a brand new one! I expected it to be a couple hundred dollars but was pleasantly surprised.

this guy had a screw loose...if you cant afford to replace a speaker in you 99 STS then you probably shouldn't have bought the car in the first place....the more likely scenario is he blew the speaker out on his dads STS and hes trying to find a cheap way to fix it before the dad figures it out.

Yeah, That sounds more like the truth! I worked with a guy once and he was always showing up to work in all these cool cars and braggin' about how they were all his and blah, blah, blah! Turned out....He didn't even really own a car! They were all cars that he was allowed to borrow from his dad. We all got a good laugh out of that! I never understood the mindset of a person that would claim that a borrowed car was his!

I like bretts theory, that sounds like the truth. If it were truly his, he would have fixed it, regardless of what we said, with OEM parts. Even if it wasnt his, if he had a little gray matter he would fix it even faster. I am not sure what to think of this guy, but I think that if he doesnt talk on this board again we wont have this problem.

For the sake of the cadillac, I hope he never gets a hold of those keys again. He is going to be one of those people that neglects his cadillac and it ends up being junk before it gets to 100k. He would rather spend 10k on his 20k SS then to spend <100 on a 50k STS. Some people completely boggle my mind!!! :mad:

I prefer to think of it as spirited debate. I won't dispute the comment about our sanity 'cause that is so subjective that I can't confirm or deny as I don't know what criteia you based your observation on so I'll let that comment stand without debate. You may not have a speaker problem at all, I had the same issue with my 98 STS, and found out my speaker is fine, and the amp may be bad. I am still trying to get the amp out of the car, and have it sent off to repair. I think it is $90. check out the website carstereohelp.com I think you will find it quite helpful.

Even if he was the richest man in America it would still be assinine for him to say on a Cadillac site that he was driving a 99!!!! STS as a beater. Dude I'll give you the $500.00 average for a beater and get the speaker fixed myself.
