I have this 88 4.5 that keeps overheating. When moving the temp stays around 180 to 195 with or with out a/c on. However when idleing or city traffic my temp. goes up to 220 or 230 degrees. The radiator ,water pump and relay are fairly new but the cooling fans seem to be running slow . I notice while standing the fans do not come on until temp reads 213. Has anyone ever encountered this? Any suggestions? I need help before the 88 like new eldorado is toast.
i would replace the thermostat
before doing anything else...

My 89' STS is the same way. 160 or so while driving and fans come on at 212 or so. Sitting in city traffic my car is 222 on a regular basis. I think the thermostat needs to be replaced.

I will try the thermostat but I will mention this that happened this evening.... I went to add a can of A/C refrigerant to the damn thing and my fan for the first time since I have had it here kicked into high speed and moved the air the way it should but it was only for a min. or so. Could it be the fan speed control heat sink? Hoping not since it is $150... I am thinking of dumping this car being it needs a gas tank and chances are the sender will need to be replaced making at $750 job.... I guess free isnt always free
