Does anyone know a way to alter the navigation system on a 2003 Escalade so as to be able to allow the passenger to enter a destination while under way?

You need to splice a switch into the vss wire that goes into the back of the nav unit. It is a grean and white wire if I am not mistaken. The wire tells the nav the speed of the vehicle. You can't simply disconnect it as the nav uses the signal to help correlate when it has a bad signal, but having a switch turn it off for a few minutes will work fine.

Anyone know if this is the same for the 2005 Escalade as well?

Hey thanks Ed, do you know what kind of switch and where I can get it?

Yep. Same thing.

Are we just talking about a simple on/off switch I can mount on the dash for this purpose?

Yes it is a simple 12 volt on off switch that can be bought at radio shack. I am going to mount it in the cubby on the center consol stack that has the door that flips up (over cd changer). You can put it on the inside top part of the cubby and the switch will be out of view (for looks). Just remember to normally drive with the switch on (unless you are in the process of entering data), or your nav performance will suffur.

Thanks Ed, you've been a big help, I appreciate it.

I used a simple push to make push to break switch from radio shack. I put mine in the little verticle slot on the left of the steering wheel. Its out off site and easily access by me. It works well.

But when you click it your nav totally stops updating, am I right?

No, it just doesn't also rely on the vehicle speed in addition to satellite input. If you are in a week sat area, the acuracy could be off alittle. It will correct itself when either the signal gets better or you shut off the switch.

Keep in mind, you are not using the map while inputing data, so the inaccuracy is irrelevant as long as you shut the switch off when done.

I just recently bought an 03 lade and was wanting to do the same thing with the switch. I installed it and nothing happens? Is it the green with white stripe wire going into the bigger of the 2 plugs that go into the back of the nav unit? I tried that and was unable to enter anything if I was moving. I also cut the wire and tried to drive with it disconected period and did not do anything? There are 2 wires that are green with white stripes on the smaller plug is it one of those? Please help as I am trying hard to get this to work! THanks in advance for your help!

so does it work on an 05?

From my understanding after doing alot of research on this is that the 03 and up you cannot do it. The vvs wire that tells the nav if the wheels are moving and how fast is coupled with the gps so if you cut the vvs it still uses the gps to know that you are moving and will not allow you to enter anything in. It might work on the non touch screen version of nav not sure. I think will only work 2002 or older.:(

Works very well on my 04. The other ways is trick the radio into thinking the wheel speed in uncalibrated. When I had a battery die and I tried to start it this happened. The nav would allow inputs while driving and was using the vss to update, once i used the radio cal feature it went away and I couldnt get it to go uncal since so i had to install the switch. A simple toggle or push to make push to break switch does well, and its in the little cubby on the left.

The lower switch is the vss shutdown, the upper switch and leds are for the computer.

tell me which wire in which connector you used to put on the switch. I did cut the greeen wire with white stripe on the big connector and put a switch in it and it did nothing. I read the instructions on avalanche.com and the person said if you have a touchscreen nav that it uses the vvs and the gps for vehicle movement and that the switch would not work. do you have a stock touchscreen nav unit? I am very curious now as I would love to make this work, I hate the fact that I cannot put the address in while I am driving and need to pull over somewhere to enter it!:bomb: Pictures would be helpful as well if you have any!

I stand corrected the vss wire is actually in the small connector and there are 2 green with white stripe wires if you disconnect the plug and look at the pin side it is in the bottom row. The other wire is right above it so make sure you are looking at it correctly. I believe it is right next to the brown and white wire not sure though. I cut it and put the switch in and it works great! I had previously searched through the forums and found directions on it but they had said that it was the green/white wire in the big connector which is actually the low signal for the left side of the speaker system that is why it did not work for me :bang2:

So you are good with the install? I love being able to hit the switch and enter destinations. Next upgrade may be to a touchscreen nav

Sorry it took so long for me to get back, but yes as you found out it is the smaller plug, and it does work on touch screen nav systems as I have an '05 EXT. I wound up mounting the switch over the stability control switch in the unused blanks. I have a second switch there for my video input with the stock nav (it also now has a rear camera hooked up to the stock screen)

Very happy! I have been trying to get that to work since I bought the vehicle! It is awesome to finally be able to enter an address in on the fly instead of pulling over somewhere to enter it in!
