View Full Version : European Map Disc? V8-Joey 05-14-05, 09:12 AM Hi, im from hungary and i bought a brand new Black 2005 Escalade with a navigation system, but i cant use the navi, cause his mapdisc is only fo usa. Im looking for a european map disc(where to buy), if its exist, please write.
Thanks.. Joey Samboosa 05-14-05, 10:24 AM I guess your best luck would be to contact the dealership.
GM says the map disc for my region should be available this month.
Sorry can't help you with the european disc but the STS/SRX for Europe is already available so you could be luckier than I am.
I have a question though, does your FM radio tune to .2, .4, .6, and .8? Edscalade 05-14-05, 03:55 PM Question for --> Samboosa
With regards to your query concerning the tuning to .2/.4/.6/.8 do you have or did you have trouble with yours in Bahrain? I live in the UAE and i bought my 2004 EXT new from the Liberty dealership and have no problems as it's made for the UAE market. But, i work at a container port and we get several Escalades/H2's imported from the States and when i have a look at them their radios won't tune to .2/.4 so on... Did you import yours or buy it from a local dealer? The navigation system does not work in europe, because it is based on the onstar system. (and the onstar is not yet avaible in europe) :banghead: Samboosa 05-15-05, 12:30 PM Edscalade, mine is purchased from the dealer in Bahrain. It originally came with the CD/Cassette radio which sure tunes to .2/.4/.6 (european standards -- the ones we follow in the gulf). But I ordered the touch screen navigation radio from the states and forgot all about the frequency difference. The new one doesn't tune to those anymore. Was just curious as to if Joey's touch screen radio is the same US one I got or is there actually one for Exports that uses the european frequency.
I don't know if it's a software thing or a part in the radio that can be changed but I'm not worried alot about it at the moment. When you have CD quality FM stations don't sound that good .
hal72, Onstar will probably not be available outside the US. But the navigation system is totally independent from it. Your navigation radio comes with a separate GPS antenna other than the one used for OnStar. It is a matter of MAPS CD that should exist from Delphi for those specific radios. I haved ask GM and also if you ask "Jamrock" here on the forum (who bought the touch screen navigation radio) that the orginal navigation system is not based on GPS but on Onstar.
Of corse you can buy a aftermarket system and use the antenna.
When it comes to the radio frequency. there`s no europian standard about tuning the radio to .2/.4/.6. In fact the FM system is the same all over the world. so maybe I missunderstand what you mean or the problem is some thing else. You should at least get a bad tuning if you miss the frequency by 1 digit. I don't know if different models are different but I installed my OEM navigation radio myself. I had to order a separate GPS antenna and I can tell it's working fine as it automatically adjusts the time via satellite.
OnStar have their own satellite antenna (not sure if it's based on GPS or not). But I'm very much sure you don't need OnStar to use GPS. I have spoken to GM in Dubai and they said a map disc for the Escalade is expected soon. We don't have OnStar here :) good if you got it working. but you are talking about this model (see picture)
I also was thinking of installed it. but didn`t when I got a answer form GM. But I wouldn`t suprise me if they didn`t know what I meant.
Did you tried with the Onstar antenna!? because The Onstar is not based on GPS, but it also use a satelitte system so in teory it should work with the same antenna. sjokomelk 05-16-05, 11:49 AM When it comes to the radio frequency. there`s no europian standard about tuning the radio to .2/.4/.6. In the US they only have frequencies with an odd decimal. We here in Europe use both odd and even decimals.
In Norwegian:
I USA så bruker de bare XXX,1 3 5 7 9 på FM-frekvenser. Mens vi bruker alle fra 0-9. På AM-siden har de hopp på 10kHz, mens vi bruker 9kHz. Så det er litt vrient av og til. :(
Sorry about the Norwegian part here. It is a bit easier trying to explain in your own language. Samboosa 05-17-05, 05:12 AM Did you tried with the Onstar antenna!? because The Onstar is not based on GPS, but it also use a satelitte system so in teory it should work with the same antenna.
No I haven't. We don't have any OnStar over here so there is no use of trying it even.
My only concern now is if Delphi would lock the radio to use only US and Canada map discs (doesn't make any sense but..). hal72: getting the OEM navigation to work in Europe is only a software issue, I know that it has been done. hal72: getting the OEM navigation to work in Europe is only a software issue, I know that it has been done.
are you sure?????? thats excellent. but where do you get the software? can you flash/install it yourself? I´m not sure where to get the software, try at your GM dealer...Yes, you can flash/install it yourself if you have the software. Samboosa 05-18-05, 01:26 PM I thought it was just a map disc issue. But a software update sounds good. I noticed for the new DENSO units (SRX/STS/XLR) they are using a firmware update disc! You just insert it and it updates automatically. Not sure about our units tho.
hal72, could you check if the update is available at your dealer? Maybe I could get the radio to run at our frequency too :D |
