View Full Version : Anyone have Geico for insurance?

I'm in NJ and just got an invitation from Geico to get a quote. Evidently they're new to the state. I currently have NJM, which is tough to get into because they are selective and therefore cheap. Well Geico is 1/3 LESS than NJM - saves me almost $800 a year for identical (actually slightly better) coverage.

Having been schooled in the past by the 'you get what you pay for' adage, I'm a little skeptical. Anyone have any trouble with them?

I don't have Geico for insurance, but know people who do. They all like it and have never had any problems. I called them for a quote about 2 years ago though and they were so high. I have good coverage and driving record, but they were quoting $1,300. every 6 months and thats in Florida. Thats bad. I ended up getting Progressive and I am paying $719. every 6 months with additional rim coverage.I don't know how your coverage is set up now, but if your paying yearly Geico is usually a 6 month policy. Just a little heads up. Otherwise if there price is better go for it. I just hope in a year they dont hit you with a crazy increase. Good Luck!:)

Thanks for the info.

I'm paying $2,300 now for 2 cars, full coverage and some optional liability enhancements. Geico is $750 every 6-months, which works out to be $1,500 a year. My driving record isn't perfect, but it's not bad either. The quote was $698 until she checked my driver's license number. It wasn't the 2 tickets I got that bumped the rate up to $759, it was a police report I filed when a psycho driver attacked me with his Impala. He tore the mirror off my driver's side door, and the mirror off of his passenger side door in a Kamikaze type move to keep me from passing him. He took off, I repaired the mirror myself (no insurance involvement) but I filed the report in case his version of the events differed from mine (nothing ever became of it). Now I pay $120 a year for it.

Anyhow, they are a lot cheaper. I'm worried that it might be some 'introductory' rate that will double next year. If so I'm screwed because once I'm out of NJM I can't get back in (you have to be employed at a 'member' company, which I'm not anymore).

I would really wait to see what some other replies say before you make this move. I understand that the quote is good, but it almost sounds to good. Like I said I have a clear license and they were way to high. Maybe it has to do with my age, but I was in my upper 20's. That quote was on 2 cars? I mean it just sounds to good. I carry more than basic coverage though so that could make a difference. If NJ has rates anything like NY when I lived there it really wouldn't matter, because its so much cheaper here in Florida.

Get this - The 01 Eldo and 02 Deville, with 300/300 liability and 500 deductible would run me $834 every six months....and I haven't had a ticket since 1974...much less an insurance claim. Plus I live down here in the Pineys..sounds like you got a pretty nice quote..is that for your Devi and the GN?

is that for your Devi and the GN?

The coverage is for the Yota (2004 Sienna) and the DTS. The GN is on a collector's policy @ $250 a year. It limits the usage, but this way I'm exempt from NJ safety and emissions inspection (the emissions machine would probably have a heart attack if they plugged it in).

I guess I did get a good quote. I think it's all about usage and thus exposure to risk. My wife doesn't work so the van gets like 8k miles a year of use. I drive 8-miles round trip 3-days a week for work in the DTS.

I had Geico, full coverage on my brand new Z28.
When I rolled it off a cliff, they totalled me and gave cut me check to replace it with a brand new one. (the car was only about 6 weeks old at the time) but they didn't deprecciate it a bit and gave me no hassles.
I would work with em again....(right now I have progressive but I am planning to switch back)....beside who can resisit those off the hook commercials!)

Those commercials are terrible! Good to know about Geico in case I ever have a problem with Progressive. Maybe they will give me a better quote this time. Otherwise I would never make the switch.

I have Geico, but my experience is limited. My wifes '02 I35, and my '02 SLS, are on the policy. Geico saved us about 30% from our previous ins co. I was rearended a month ago, and put a claim through with them. They stated that I would have to treat this as a at-fault collision claim, until they receive the accident report. So I had to pay my $500.00 deductible, and will wait for the accident report (it still hasn't arrived (NJTP)). Once they get the report, they will go after the other guys ins co. If they receive 100% of the claim, I get all $500.00 back. If they get 80%, I get 80%, or $400.00. 50%, and I get $250.00, you get the idea. I was fixed up rather quickly, and got to choose the body shop of my choice. I cannot speak of second or third year raises in price, as Geico has been in NJ, for less than one year. So far, I am happy with them. I hope this was helpful.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I think I'll make the switch. Maybe I'll give NJM an opportunity to do better, but 30+% is a lot to make up.

Geico is very excited about their expansion into NJ, and they talk about it all over the place. I have them, and they are quite a bit cheaper than Progressive. I couldnt do progressive or Geico when I was under 21, but now Geico is much more palatable.

Their commercials are actually not bad, but they were better when the Gecko did his own talking.

My favorite was the one where he walks into the employment office and the Taco Bell Chihuahua pops out of the back. (After TC fired him)
