View Full Version : OnStar and Bluetooth Phones smoovlatino 05-10-05, 02:16 AM Does anyone know if there is, possibly in development or on the current market, any type of bluetooth kits that can integrate with OnStar (using its microphone and vehicle speakers)? Does anyone have ANY type of bluetooth car kits for a cell phone installed in their Escalade? What is good one to get and does it use the vehicle's speakers or a crappy little external speaker? Hemi Dawg 05-12-05, 11:01 PM I was going to ask this exact question--glad I searched. No responses here though.
Sometimes Google is better than forums to get answers!
Parrot sells a very good bluetooth kit with lcd screen--perhaps a professional installer (dealers can usually recommend someone) could figure out how to use the on-star buttons, mike, and speakers (but I doubt it--unless he was a real genius).
on-star really should provide this solution as bluetooth WILL put them out of business soon--can't figure out why anyone still installs them actually
There is a big market there is someone figures it out...off to google now, will report back any findings... Hemi Dawg 05-12-05, 11:22 PM a post from treocentral.com

My company sells handsfree and GPS hardware. We use the Parrot CK3100 as our premier handsfree option. This is by far the best kit on the market, I've personally tested most of them.
The kits primary advantage over others bluetooth kits is the fact you can flash new software when available over the bluetooth connection. The latest version out currently is 4.10b (I think). This latest version has only been available for a few weeks and works well with most current phone models, including the 650. You can access the software and latest flash version from DriveBlue.com (http://www.driveblue.com/) and click on downloads.
This is a major advantage over other bluetooth kits since the technology is constantly changing and your not buying hardware that will be obsolete in two months.

If you haven't downloaded the carkit software from Pa1mOne, you need to. I installed my CK3100 on Sunday and got my 650 yesterday. It function ok after pairing with the carkit, but had the same connection issue as your. I flashed new software into the Parrot kit this morning, which covered several know "small" issues. One of which included a fix to better enhance the sound quality. I personally thought the quality was awsome to begin with, but it did improve (less road noise at high speed, plus the mic audio was louder)! After the Parrot update, the two devices only connect when needed, such as a call incoming or outgoing. I attended the CTIA wireless conference earlier this week in New Orleans and spoke with my Parrot sales rep. He advised me to download the software fix for the 650. I downloaded the software from palm here (http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/treo650carkitupdate/) and now, perfection! The kit and the 650 connection happens as soon as you turn on the ignition. The display shows your carrier info, signal strength, caller ID, etc. You can dial, answer, end call, call wait, and control the volume through the controller. Plus all the other advanced features. It still does not sync the phonebook, but you can transfer the phonebook entries to the kit.
I hope this helps anyone interested in purchasing this kit. We also offer audio interface harnesses for most current Ford vehicles and GM models with On-Star. These harness options allow you to connect the entire kit to the factory radio without splicing any wires in the vehicle. Once the Parrot kit is connected to the interface harness, all you have to do is remove the factory radio and plug the harness into the radio harness. Then run the mic wire from overhead to the control box and mount the display, all done. PLUS, with these harness kits on late model Ford and GM radios, the word "phone" or "call" comes up on the screen of the radio during a call. You can also adjust the audio coming through the factory system with the volume on the factory radio or through steering wheel controls if equipped. smoovlatino 05-13-05, 04:33 PM Wow... great post! Do you know where you can buy this harness or perhaps a part number/model name? Sounds like exactly what we are looking for! smoovlatino 05-13-05, 04:41 PM I just sent an email to PARROT:
Is there any type of harness available with Parrot Handsfree Kits to allow the use of BlueTooth phones in conjunction with Factory OnStar microphones/speakers? I have a 2003 Cadillac Escalade with OnStar (Microphone mounted on the ceiling and use of vehicle's speaker system). Thank you in advance for your time. Hemi Dawg 05-13-05, 10:34 PM great email idea, please post any response...as i will if i ever hear back from that guy in atlanta who posted on treocentral--maybe we should also ask on-star if they have any suggestions? smoovlatino 05-14-05, 09:11 PM Great idea, although I believe OnStar would be reluctant to develop a bluetooth system fearing loss of customers to their already high priced subscriptions. I would think if OnStar developed some type of interface with their factory installed systems and bluetooth, it would be quite lucritive following a patent. I'm sure the idea has been pitched to OnStar and may possibly be marketed in the near future (we hope). smoovlatino 05-17-05, 06:47 PM I got the response from Parrot. They are based in France, so the representative's English wasn't very good.... here's the response to question I posted above:
Dear sir,
Concerning your request, i inform you that the install of the car kit to this vehicle, is depending of course of the adaptor available in relation with the sytem build in it.

With all those informations about the vehicle you have, in some of the cases you will need to know that some adaptors are available but depends of the sytem build to your vehicle.

In relation with the vehicle you have, you doesn't seem to have an external amplifier build to the vehicle, and then the plug are not the ISO.
So you will have several posibilities.
Line in - line out install:
First by what we call the line out of the autoradio (where you can connect both wires the green and the brown to passing the sound through the high speakers and then the install will be easier.
(the line out of the autoradio is not included in the main autoradio but in the type of cars like yours, so get the advise with Jaguar if you have the line out behind the autoradio.
The following situation is possible if you have an autoradio which has what
we call the line + and line -. You need to be informed about the radio you
have.
Wires to wires install (most of the time the installer will be able to do it specially when the installer fit the alarm or car kit):
You can also make a wires to wires connexion. In that case, you will find the mute cable and the wires in relation with the use.
[u]
Mute cable of the ck3X00:
male and femelle (you connect to the autoradio and the hight speakers)
Black, Brown : Rear right loudspeaker - Orange, Red : Front left
loudspeaker
Green, blue : Front right loudspeaker - White , grey : Rear right
speaker
the pin connector of the mute cable to the black box:
Black: grounded
blue : Mute
Yellow: 12 volt after contact (ignition)
White: line out audio -
Red : Sound amplifer +
But you can also install the car kit by an external high speaker:
You will find enclosed the schema into this email.
You have all the informations about the alternativity with the manufacturers of the adaptor.

[/size] Hemi Dawg 05-20-05, 02:19 PM you were right, onstar responded to my email to them, stating that they had no plans to introduce bluetooth capabilities Hemi Dawg 05-20-05, 02:21 PM the treocentral guy returned my email also--it is on another computer, but he says it would be very difficult to use the car's speakers rather than the ck3100 speaker. i'll post his letter later if i remember. One interface kit can be seen here.....http://www.soundgate.com/index.php?request=product.details&categoryid=24&productid=362&usereferrer=1 Hemi Dawg 05-23-05, 05:19 PM here's the full text from the treocentral guy:
We don't have an interface harness for the Cadillac brand of GM vehicles except for the Escalade.
You can install the CK3100 in the Deville, but only have two options for audio output. You can use the factory speakers but this is labor intensive because the Deville has an amplified system. You have to connect the speaker wires between the amp and the speakers. The other option is to use an external speaker mounted under/in the dash out of sight. This is the easiest and the most common install for your type of application. Hemi Dawg 05-23-05, 05:21 PM One interface kit can be seen here.....http://www.soundgate.com/index.php?request=product.details&categoryid=24&productid=362&usereferrer=1
this is great link tdar, thanks--if anyone pursues this option, please post progress/results here 02escalade 11-14-05, 07:39 PM It looks like this option will bypass the onstar system all together though. Anyone else get that from it's description? smoovlatino 01-05-06, 03:43 PM I have installed the Parrot CK-3100 in my 2002 Cadillac Escalade EXT and it works perfectly. I interfaced the unit with my Alpine CVA-1005 brain unit and have the audio come through the speakers (exactly like OnStar). All I have to do is turn on bluetooth with my phone and sit in the truck... the Parrot connects to my phone and I just speak commands and it dials. It's pretty sweet. ewill3rd 01-05-06, 06:02 PM I am not sure why you'd need to use a bluetooth device to work "with" your onstar.
Currently you can link your OnStar account to Verizon and pay one bill for airtime between your cellular and your OnStar system.
Also the '05 STS with navigation has built in bluetooth so that you can use hands free calling on your bluetooth cellular device.
I am not sure what other bluetooth capabilities this system has because I haven't messed with one much.
I did have a customer yesterday with on of those newer razor (sp?) phones and it seemed to work really well. His only problem was he had to reinitialize the phone every ignition cycle, it's only 3 button presses but I can see how that could be a nuisance after a while.
I am sure this will come out in more carlines as bluetooth and customer demand grow. Spittin Game 01-05-06, 06:19 PM I was at my Dealer for my last service and I was talking to them about the bluetooth kits. And they have them installed for like $600 or $800 depending on which maker you choose, and its fully warrantied for a certain amount of time. It uses your stereo speakers and works with aftermarket radios too. It mutes it autmatically so you can answer or not. I dont remember the brands my dealer was using but he said they installed it in a few diff. caddies and it works like a charm in every one!
Oh, and its not connected with onstar at all, so if you dont have a subscription it dont matter! goodfela 01-06-06, 01:36 AM Why don't you try out the Onstar Forum...
http://www.onstarforum.com/phpbb/index.php
There's a lot of good info on their site. ewill3rd 01-06-06, 07:42 AM Oh great! Now I have another forum to read! LOL | |
