View Full Version : 5 point belts end9472 05-07-05, 05:45 PM I am a new V owner (picked up my silver '05 at the end of March) and am looking forward to taking the car out to the track this year to see what it can do around a road/autocross course. Based on past experience, 5 or 6 point belts are a must to keep you planted in the seat. Has anyone installed these belts in their V? Though I would prefer not to I'm thinking I may have to put in a new seat to accommodate this type of set up? Any suggestions? Two words.
Duct Tape.
Seriously though, someone did a track event recently and found a seatbelt lock to hold you in place. Try sefa, I believe he was the poster on that. GNSCOTT 05-07-05, 06:15 PM I thought you were supposed to attatch a 5 point to a roll cage? SlvrVee 05-07-05, 07:44 PM Sefa01 and I both had 5 point harness installed. We had had both driver and passenger done. When not in use the belts are easily hidden under the seat. Here are a few pics steve711 05-07-05, 08:03 PM Wheres the pics?
Edit
oops sorry steve711 05-07-05, 08:05 PM Super nice.
I was so thinking about doing this. How much did that set you back? SlvrVee 05-07-05, 08:06 PM having problems attaching pics. Will keep trying to post a few`more SlvrVee 05-07-05, 08:13 PM The harness was about $220 for the pair plus $150 for the install. willsctsv 05-07-05, 08:35 PM Linden, You going to Watkins Glen Monday? I'm trying desperately to make it. Last wed I was accidentally poked in the left eye and had to go to the ER. I have torn cornea and now my vision is all blurry that I cant drive. So it's day to day for me This looks beautiful! I see the front mounting point. Where do the shoulder and lap belts mount? SlvrVee 05-07-05, 10:46 PM The shoulder belt is bolted to to same bolt that the rear factory belt is fastened to. The lap belt on the other hand is bolted to the floor using the the bolts that hold the rear of the seat to the floor.
The belts all hide away very easily when not in use. end9472 05-07-05, 10:58 PM Thanks. Those look like just the ticket. Do the shoulder and lap belts mount to the seat frame floor bolts or is the set up similar to the anti-submarine belts in the front? Dreamin 05-08-05, 01:37 AM CG-Lock works pretty well... It fits the driver seat belt, but not the passenger belts.

Can you e-mail me the details on where you got these (and installed)... I want to post on the FAQ. This is cool!

ctsvett@verizon.net Silver Baron 05-08-05, 09:45 AM Before selecting or installing any "racing" belts, make sure you follow the recommended installation practice. Also make sure your new belts and the mounting locations will be accepted by the santioning body you want to drive with e.g. Scca, Solo, Autox, Trackdays, Club Racing etc.
There are a lot of things that can go wrong here.
BTW, I love my G-lock too Dreamin 05-08-05, 05:30 PM :yeah:
5-point harness + roll-over without rollcage = bad news :( Dreamin is right on. No 5-point without a cage. Belt manufacturers will tell you the same. CG-lock is awesome!

I purchased a set of two CG-Locks for my car. Driver side goes on fine. You have to drill through some plastic to get the passenger side on, which is what I did. I figured my driving instructor might be a bit pissed if I had a nice(er) restraint than him. In the end, my instructor didn't use it at all.
I use my CG-Lock every day. It really sinches you into the seat, and keeps you planted. The bolsters on our seats are WAY to small IHMO.
It hink it was $80 total for two.

5-point harness + roll-over without rollcage = bad news :(Disagree completely. (BTW, greeting from Watkins Glen where SlverVee and WillCTS are with me). The 5-point harness is great. I had the CG-lock and there's no comparison. Sent them back for a refund--which they gave me promptly. I saw this set up personally on SlverVee and sefa1. These belts are perfect! Everything is tight and yet easily hidden away, when not in use.
P.S. We had 4 CTS-V's at Watkins Glen Today! It was Impressive to say the least.

I don't think anyone doubts that your 5-points look, fit and feel great. They will hold you very positively in place during spirited driving. :yup:
However, what real advantage/protection they give in case of an accident, not to mention a rollover is the issue. That is why many racing association make very specific installation regs. In addition, many do not recommend/allow latch-locks anymore only cam-locks.
So, again everybody just use due diligence. :grouphug: Ghost-V 05-10-05, 11:59 AM Not a race car fabricator, but IMHO there's no doubt that a cage would make this set-up safer, but only if the seats and belts were bolted dirctly to it.
I don't really see what the difference is between what SlvrVee installed and the OEM restraints, which are part of the seat itself, not even attached to the b-pillar... thebigjimsho 05-10-05, 12:47 PM I've always had reservations about the belt being integrated into the seat. For fat bastards like myself, I'd think in a high speed crash I would be creating some monster torque on the seat attchments. I am not sure I am serious enough about track days yet to invest in a full set of harneses, but the belt lock idea seems good. Which is CG-lock, latch or cam? If not cam, then what system do you recommend and where do you get it. Dreamin 05-10-05, 02:59 PM Issue is 100% roll-over.
When buckled-in nice and tight with a 5-point harness, in case of roll-over - without a rollbar or cage - your head becomes the highest point in the car. In a sedan, chances are high the roof will collapse. Thanks for playing... game over.
With the factory 3-point your body will slide sideways from the force of the collapsing roof... not so with a 5-point. |
