What are you guys and gals getting out of third gear (mph wise)? I got 110 mph last night and may have been able to squeeze some more. Does this sound about right?

This is kind of what I keep in mind as a safe range while shifting at full throttle or needing to down shift from a cruising speed:

1st gear 0-45 mph
2nd gear 45-65 mph
3rd gear 65-95 mph
4th gear 95 +

If you check out the gear ratios along with your tires diameter, you can get the max speed. I'm to lazy to do it right now but it's a piece of cake if you really want to know.

Even though I think 110mph is correct, I'll do a validation run tomorrow to be certain. :lildevil:

Yes this seems as thought it would provide access to the higher torque band before the torque starts dropping off .

I have gotten to 135mph in 3rd gear....oops...that was in the Porsche pictured above...but then it is only a 4 speed.

mallett must have done something....
normally you can't get much above 93 in third.

What track? I though they were doing it on the highway???

Anyway, I maxed out in 3rd and completely forgot to check my speed... Guess I'll have to do it again tomorrow :helpless: (on the "track" of course).

Banging 4th at/near red line in 3rd gear at 110MPH it is boys! Buttonwillow Raceway road course for me. Then .......you get to "stand on the Brembo's" and feel your eye balls try to come out of their sockets! Just a little side bar, I warped the front rotars in that session, but the dealer resurfaced them "this time" they said. Hard to do that stuff with any confidence or safety around here, unless it is wide open out in the desert for me. Be safe guys. Don't want to see any nasty pictures, hurt people or wrecked V's. Better yet take a driving school (if you haven't yet) where you can track your own car and feel it at the real limit! Priceless!

They say memory is the 2nd thing to go. In my case maybe the first thing! Forget that 110 MPH stuff in 3rd. It is shy of 100 MPH when I'm on the rev limiter in 3rd. Verified by a little trip to the Home Depot this AM (no side streets, 4 lanes, etc relatively safe). Need to get it back out on the track though for another audit!

Yeah, no way are you pulling 110 in third (stock anyway) I am in fourth going through the traps and am in that gear for a couple seconds. Not even 100 in third..:thumbsup:

I did a rough estimate on the tire diameter (23.5") and we'd need a 1.15:1 3rd gear to pull 110mph @ 6500rpm. I think our 3rd gear is around 1.3x:1....

I recall 96mph at redline in 3rd gear. Getting to 110 means that redline or axle ratio have changed... or the speedo is calculated very, very wrong (potentially via reprogramming).

Just to start some fun.... the concept of switching to a higher gear to be closer to the torque peak is usually more than offset by the torque multiplication of the lower gear. :lildevil:
