View Full Version : My Oil Light Is ON---97 Catera ikarukeion 05-06-05, 11:29 AM My oil light is on, but the oil is NOT low. The oil pressure lowers when the engine gets hot. The pressure comes a hair from the red line.
I don't think the pump is bad because it responds to elevated RPMs. The pressure is high when cold as it should be.
Do I need a higher viscosity oil rather than the recommended type? Could it be the sending unit?
Boy am I glad this website is here!!!!
Thanks,
Jeff omermurat 05-06-05, 12:30 PM That's a common problem and had been addressed several times in this forum. If your red pressure light is on, that must be investigated immediately. Should it be the sender or the gauge that malfunctioning that's not that important, but you are not safe until you know it for sure.
Here is one of my posts about the issue;
Should you have some oil pressure problem, using higher grade oil is the simplest and quickest fix, but I do not think that's the safest as every oil has its own ideal working temperature window. The higher the grade the higher the temp it needs to reach to do the necessary lubrication. At every cold start it takes longer to reach its ideal working temp and the ideal lubrication will be delayed. Also, higher grade oil takes much more effort to move around and that hurts the gas milage.
Using an external oil cooler with correct grade oil is a better solution (maybe not the best) as the oil gets cooled when it's necessary thanks to the cooler's thermostat. That's how I did it on my car, and I am pretty happy for more than a year. But, that's just me;) ikarukeion 05-06-05, 04:16 PM Thanks Omermurat
You mention putting an oil cooler on your car. Could you please shed some light on oil coolers for this car? (where to buy, ease of installation, types,..)
Thanks again omermurat 05-06-05, 05:05 PM I have been planning taking some pictures of my application to post here, but I haven't had a chance to do it yet. Hopefully soon.
Follow this link for more info on the cooler;

You mentioned you had your external oil cooler system for over a year! Tell me something .., has the sandwich connector on your system ever leaked in any
way? Also, when you do your oil filter changes do you have to be overly careful that the sandwich connector doesn't come off as you spin off the filter?
Can you put a bigger filter with the sandwich connector on!
I want to get mine done as well, and there are many pricey systems, including the ones that relocate the oil filter. I contemplated relocating the oil filter to put a bigger one, and to not to have to worry about tampering with and potentially having inadvertent leaks at the sandwich connector.
thanks again,
-Jorge. omermurat 05-08-05, 09:34 AM The sandwich adaptor is secured by a threated piece of pipe, and it doesn't come off as you remove your filter to change it. Mine doesn't leak and it does accept a bigger oil filter (at least 50% bigger). I really need to take some pictures soon :) BLUCAT98 05-08-05, 11:43 AM Wow 50% bigger that's a lot of space.., that should take an ACDelco PF52 fine on
top of the sandwich connector, right?
How tight should this threaded piece of pipe can be? I thought that the block oil filter center "bolt" wouldn't support much torqueing?
I'm interested in seeing how it fits together!! I'm also interested on the dimensions of your external oil cooler? How big is it, HxWxD?
Remind me again where your temperature needle sits on the temp gauge under normal operations?
thanks buddy!!
-J. omermurat 05-08-05, 12:10 PM Jorge,
I personally prefer Fram X2 (or XG) for oil filtering, and I simply pick the biggest possible filter instead of the listed one. The dimention of the big filter is the same with the original size filter, but the length is bigger. I'm gonna look it up and post the number of the bigger filter.
I do not know the torque value of te adaptors bolt but I made it pretty tight :)
It's been a while but the cooler was Derale made I guess. Just check that post out: http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=285379&postcount=2
My temp needle sits one tick below the middle mark, when idling in traffic with the A/C on it passes the middle mark but that's it. It used to be higher that that without the cooler and the oil pressure lamp used to come on.. BLUCAT98 05-08-05, 01:13 PM If it works for you it'll work for me!! :thumbsup: !
But.., this oil cooler is 17in wide! :jawdrop: !!!!!!! Where did you put it? My idea was to put it right behind the front grille on the driver side! But, a 17in cooler seems to press against the fan turning hub!

Well, I'll have to check again 'cause it's only 3/4in deep! Did you secured it or is it loose? omermurat 05-08-05, 09:55 PM First of all it is secure right behind the grille, in front of the fans. There is just enough space for the cooler, but the cold air snorkel must be removed.
The cooler is big, I do not remember the dimentions but when I take some pictures (I'm planning on doing it very soon, promise :o) I take some measurements as well. | |
