View Full Version : Gas milage tatvamasi 05-06-05, 10:07 AM I am not sure this subject has been brought up before. But I am happy to see that I am getting over 300 miles a tank (may be 360! as I did not let it go to end) on my catera (of course on highway). my car takes about 1/4 of tank for each 100 miles. what are your experiences? omermurat 05-06-05, 11:22 AM I regularly manage to get 350 - 380 miles a tank in city. If I drive on highway I can easily manage 450- 480.
I've got 108K on the odo and the following "extras" installed on my car;
K&N air filter
Mobil 1 10w30 sythetic motor oil with external oil cooler,
Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF,
Mobil 1 Synthetic Differantial oil,
Bosch Platinum +4 spark plugs,
ATS Planet 17" wheels shod with 235/45/17 Kumho Ecsta 711s on proper pressure,
Cross drilled brake rotors with Green Stuff front & Hawk rear pads.
Oh by he way, I am anything but a lead foot
Instead of watching the car in front of me, I always watch 3-4 cars ahead, and I coast to slow rather than late braking. I don't accelerate hard either.
With the gas prices I think that's way we all should drive :yup: in return we get rewarded with better milage, healtier cars and less stress and risk. CateraSport2000 05-06-05, 03:57 PM 97-99 has an 18 gallon tank I think... those of us with 00-01 have a 16 gallon tank. I'm lucky to get 300 miles to a tank with normal driving.
Jeff andyman 05-06-05, 04:37 PM the 97-99 has a 16 too. So omermurat, you get 460-480 a tank on the highway!?!? thats like 30 mpg. thats some crazy stats considering my 99 will go about 360 to 380. how are you pulling 30mpg out of a Catera? you must drive like my grandma, no offence.:) AllenPacla 05-06-05, 05:01 PM I have read somewhere that with just driving 55mph in highways instead of going 65 or over would save you about 15% of gas, i guess that explains it since he described pretty much the way he drives. omermurat 05-06-05, 05:13 PM Well, you got me guys, I drive like one when I drive the Catera :)
But I flip a switch when I drive my S2000 especially on the twisty back roads..! CateraSport 05-06-05, 05:50 PM Well, you got me guys, I drive like one when I drive the Catera :)

240HP actually and the engine comes to life at 6000rpm, and screams up to 9000. Unbelieveably quick steering combined with a stiff chassis, it's almost telepathic..
Anyway, this is a Catera forum, let's stick with it :canttalk: Chaztera 05-06-05, 07:25 PM 2001 Maroon Cat-Sport Synth 5-30 oil, w/o sport button 324 miles per tank city/Fwy
combined. can get 360 miles on long trips just kicked 68,000 miles. Zig-Zag-Zing... alvarofue 05-06-05, 11:11 PM Mine is the euro version, opel Omega, and it has an on board computer. At 120km/h (75mph) it does between 7,5 and 8 L/100km (32-30mpg). And now in a mixture of city and low speed freeways (45mph) it averages 12,2 L/100km (19-20mpg). I find it reasonable. overplayed 05-07-05, 11:19 AM I only get 20 mpg with city/fwy combination, which is up from the 16 mpg when I first got the Catera. I usually go 65-75 mph on the fwy and only drive aggressively when needed (late, stress relief, bored, etc..):o and I use the sport mode on occasion.:burn: Vesicant 05-07-05, 12:14 PM I only get 20 mpg with city/fwy combination, which is up from the 16 mpg when I first got the Catera. Wow, S2000 I love those... sat in one at the Honda' dealer and it fit like a glove. I think id rather have an NSX though- if only they werent 90 grand. :want: :coolgleam omermurat 05-07-05, 02:40 PM Jeff, if you are in to spirited driving, S2K has the best bang for the buck. It's a great blast throwing her from one apex to another.. After that kind of treatment there is no need to drive something else hard at all, so I drive my Catera like a Cadillac :D CateraSport2000 05-07-05, 03:45 PM Ok, I had to confirm this and find out the real answer :)
97 and 98 Cateras have 18 gallon fuel tanks
99, 00, and 01 Cateras have 16 gallon fuel tanks.

This seems low compared to the rest of you - should I have this checked? What could be the issue if any? :) omermurat 05-10-05, 06:07 PM Under inflated tires,
Bad wheel alignment,
Old spark plugs,
Clogged fuel injectors,
Wrong grade fuel,
Dirty air filter,
Having a lead foot..
Take your pick :) tatvamasi 05-10-05, 06:43 PM Under inflated tires,

I can pick mine on bad wheel alignment. I will watch out as I have get that done today. dreamdriven 06-01-05, 04:28 PM Hi,
I got my 97 Catera in Sept 04. I didn't think I was having any problems til I saw this forum today.
I am getting 200-225 miles per tank. Yikes! I was told by several people "you know Cadillacs are gas hogs, so I never questioned it.
It went in for inspection today. Needs a new third brake light, 3/4 is out, needs rear brake pads, and a new air filter. The clips weren't on to hold it down.
Should I get the oil changed and fuel filters, since I don't know when anything was changed? What else do you recommend?
Also the TC light is always on. Does that cut the mileage. Any help would be appreciated!! tatvamasi 06-01-05, 05:44 PM Also the TC light is always on. Does that cut the mileage. Any help would be appreciated!!
I find on mine that this does cut the milage. There is a button on your control panel to turn it off. This should be on only in snow and icy conditions. omermurat 06-01-05, 09:43 PM Hi,

Being safe is better than sorry so get the filters changed as they have direct effect on fuel consumption. overplayed 06-02-05, 10:29 PM Also the TC light is always on. Does that cut the mileage. Any help would be appreciated
If the light is on, the Traction Control is off. The TC should be on (light off) by default every time you turn the car on. I think the light will come if you have a problem with the TC, but I am not sure. Try hitting the button and see if the light will go off. tatvamasi 06-03-05, 10:55 AM If the light is on, the Traction Control is off.
Hummm, I believe it is, light is on TC is on, Light is off TC is off. vogel81 06-03-05, 01:24 PM Hummm, I believe it is, light is on TC is on, Light is off TC is off.
Actually, overplayed is correct. Light on, traction control is off. Light off traction control is on. Trust me.....I've tested this a few times. omermurat 06-03-05, 06:40 PM TC light is off, the TC system is on.
TC light is on, the TC system off.
When TC light blinks, the system is working due to traction loss (hard acceleration, rain etc.)
Everytime engine is started, the TC system is engaged by default, it needs to be disabled by pressing the TC button. dreamdriven 06-03-05, 08:56 PM I'm confused. Are you saying I need to turn off TC everytime I start the engine.
The TC light is on almost all of the time when I am driving, so does that mean it is off?
That seems backward.
I'm so glad I found this forum! Thanks for helping out!
Thanks Pam omermurat 06-03-05, 10:17 PM The light should be off (the system is on) everytime you start the engine. If that is not the case there is something wrong. I'll go thru the shop manuals and I'll post if I find something.
Let me understand one thing;
The TC light is on at all times and it goes off when you press the TC button. Is that right? overplayed 06-04-05, 11:03 AM In the owners manual it said that the traction control system warning light will come for the following reasons:
- If there's a brake system problem that is specifically related to traction control, the traction control system will turn off and the warning light will come on.
-If the traction control system is affected by an engine-related problem, the system will turn off and the warning light will come on. | |
